The Taipei Metro, more commonly known as the MRT or formally as the Taipei Rapid Transit System (Chinese: 臺北大眾捷運系統; pinyin: Táiběi Dàzhòng Jiéyùn Xìtǒng), is a rapid transit system serving metropolitan Taipei in Taiwan. The system is built by the Department of Rapid Transit Systems, Taipei City Government (DORTS-Taipei) and Department of Rapid Transit Systems, New Taipei City Government (DRTS-New Taipei) and operated by the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC). It consists of 108 stations (117 stations if transfer stations are double-counted) and 5 main routes, operating on 131.1 kilometres (81.5 mi) of revenue track. The system carried an average of over 1.78 million passengers per day in December 2012.
The Taipei Metro is Taiwan's first metro system. Since it first began operations in 1996, the system has been effective in relieving some of Taipei's traffic congestion problems. The system has also proved effective as a catalyst for urban renewal, as well as increasing tourist traffic to outlying towns such as Tamsui. Conversions to existing railway lines were made to integrate them into the metro system.
Taipei (/ˌtaɪˈpeɪ/, literally means "North of Tai(wan)"), officially known as Taipei City (Chinese: 臺北市 or 台北市; pinyin: Táiběi Shì; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Tâi-pak Chhī), is the capital city and a special municipality of Taiwan. Sitting at the northern tip of Taiwan, Taipei City is an enclave of the municipality of New Taipei City. It is about 25 km (16 mi) southwest of the northern port city Keelung. The city is mostly located on the Taipei Basin, an ancient lakebed bounded by the two relatively narrow valleys of the Keelung and Xindian rivers, which join to form the Tamsui River along the city's western border.
The city proper is home to an estimated population of 2,693,672 in 2009, forming the core part of the Taipei–Keelung metropolitan area which includes the nearby cities of New Taipei and Keelung with a population of 6,900,273, the 40th most-populous urban area in the world. The name "Taipei" can refer either to the whole metropolitan area or the city proper.
Taipei is the political, economic, educational, and cultural center of Taiwan, and one of the major hubs of the Chinese-speaking world. Considered to be a global city, Taipei is part of a major high-tech industrial area.Railways, high-speed rail, highways, airports, and bus lines connect Taipei with all parts of the island. The city is served by two airports – Taipei Songshan and Taiwan Taoyuan. Taipei is home to various world-famous architectural or cultural landmarks which include Taipei 101, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Dalongdong Baoan Temple, Hsing Tian Kong, Mengjia Longshan Temple, National Palace Museum, Presidential Office Building, Taipei Guest House, Ximending, and several night markets dispersing over the city. Its natural features such as Maokong, Yangmingshan, and hot springs are also well known to international visitors.
Central station is a common name for a railway station, for example Central railway station (London) and Melbourne Central. As well as being used for centrally located stations (such as the former Croydon Central station), "Central" often appears in names of stations that were once served by railway companies which used Central as part of their name—for example Leicester Central railway station was owned by the Great Central Railway, and Grand Central Station in New York City was part of the New York Central Railroad.
When translating foreign texts into English, "Central station" sometimes replaces the name of stations in the non-English speaking world where the literal meaning of the station's name is central station or main station. An example of the latter is the Danish word hovedbanegård. Travel and rail sources such as Rough Guides,Thomas Cook European Timetable and Deutsche Bahn's passenger information generally use the native name; whilst some websites and English publications of some national railway operators use "central station" or "central railway station" instead.
Taipei Station, also called Taipei Railway Station (臺北火車站, by the Taiwan Railway Administration) or Taipei Main Station (臺北車站, by the Taipei Metro), refers to the old downtown region in Taipei, Taiwan, where different modes of public transport systems converge; the station is at the center of this region. Prior to the opening of the Taipei Metro lines at the station in 1997, the region was simply known as "Taipei Station" or "Taipei Railway Station". The station handles over half a million passengers daily on conventional rail, metro, and high-speed rail.
Taipei Station and its surroundings are currently undergoing intensive renovation and redevelopment. Projects include the construction of the Taoyuan Airport MRT System (slated to begin service in 2016) and the Gate of Taipei.
The station is located in the Zhongzheng District in downtown Taipei. The area south of the station is known as "station front" because the original railway station's main entrance faced south. Accordingly, the area just north of the station is known as "station rear." The station rear area is actually located in the Datong District. The commercial districts around the station are popular with students and commuters, and boast a large collection of bookstores, eclectic businesses targeting students, and cram schools. Because of its location at what is roughly considered the center of Taipei, the station is a popular meeting point for students and tourists.

This is a quick video that show you some highlights of the best metro system that I've ever been on, the Taipei Metro MRT. The underground subway system covers most of the city. It's convenient, clean, inexpensive, and efficient. Compared to other mass transit systems, Taipei Metro feels luxurious. It may be the best public transit system in the world. For more information about traveling to Taipei, check out my budget guide to the city: http://www.itchyfeetonthecheap.com/2016/03/03/taipei-taiwan-on-the-cheap/

Locals are used to the convenience but if you are visiting either for a short or extended time to Taipei you are in store for a comfortable, safe, and easy way to get around the city. There are 5 main lines of the Taipei Metro which consists of a mix of underground and above ground infrastructure with a total of 108 stations. This does not include the airport service as this is a separate entity called Taoyuan MRT. I highly recommend downloading either the IOS or android Taipei MRT app available in The App Store and Google Play. This will help you plan yo...

I had the honor to join the trial runs of the new Taipei - Taoyuan Airport MRT line. As I really needed to get to the airport from the city on February 18th 2017, I queued early morning in the long line at Taipei main station to wait for my free ticket. At about 2pm I boarded the train on Taipei Central Station. This magnificent metro line starts underground, and then emerges above ground to elevated tracks. The metro train then climbs a steep slope through beautiful forested hills to Linkou Plateau where it enters a tunnel again. During the rest of the trip till the airport, nice paddies in the country side are seen around. Video of a middle-aged foreign man hurling insults at commuters on a Taipei train is going viral there. The video, originally uploaded to Facebook, has already received thousands of views and comments and has appeared on local news sites. The man, who tells the appalled crowd he's an American, appears to brag about his superiority and importance. It's not clear exactly what set him off or what happened before filming began. Just in case his message isn't getting though, he switches into broken Mandarin Chinese. Translation: "You are all pigs!" "They feel I am important because I'm an American!", and "President Ma is a worm" among other randomness. Online comments from Taiwanese mainly expressed concern with the lack of security, with the memory of a deadly stabbing attack last year s...

This is a public art installation in Taipei's MRT 101 station. It was commissioned in July, 2011, and finished in November 24, 2013. The art installations use early split-flap displays to form 10x10 matrixes of faces. Every single display can be controlled independently and create endless number of combinations of faces. These faces convey the idea of when we meet, our emotions and expressions spread out to others', and like the old Chinese proverb: "to honor old people as we do our own aged parents, and care for other's children as one's own"
