David John Moore Cornwell (born 19 October 1931), pen name John le Carré /lə ˈkɑːrˌeɪ/, is a British author of espionage novels. During the 1950s and the 1960s, Cornwell worked for the Security Service and the Secret Intelligence Service, and began writing novels under a pen name. His third novel The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1963) became an international best-seller, and it remains one of his best-known works. Following the success of this novel, he left MI6 to become a full-time author.
Le Carré established himself as a writer of espionage fiction. In 2008, The Times ranked le Carré 22nd on its list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945". In 2011, he won the Goethe Medal, a yearly prize given by the Goethe Institute.
On 19 October 1931, David John Moore Cornwell was born to Richard Thomas Archibald (Ronnie) Cornwell (1906–75) and Olive (Glassy) Cornwell, in Poole, Dorset, England. He was the second son to the marriage, the first being Tony, two years his elder, now a retired advertising executive; his younger half-sister is the actress Charlotte Cornwell; and Rupert Cornwell, a former Independent newspaper Washington bureau chief, is a younger half-brother. John le Carré said he did not know his mother, who abandoned him when he was five years old, until their re-acquaintance when he was 21 years old. His relationship with his father was difficult, given that the man had been jailed for insurance fraud, was an associate of the Kray twins (among the foremost criminals in London) and was continually in debt. A biographer reports,
They are the titans of the spy novel, who have elevated thrillers to the level of literary fiction. Much imitated, much adapted by the big and small screens, Ian Fleming and John Le Carré have painted our picture of post-war espionage: Fleming through the dashing figure of James Bond, with his lush locations and Martinis as icy as his heart; Le Carré through his damning portrait of the British secret service drawn from his own time in MI5 and MI6. But which of the two novelists is the greater? In this thrilling contest, Fleming’s case was made by Anthony Horowitz, creator of the bestselling Alex Rider spy novels and author of the official Bond continuation novel 'Trigger Mortis'. Championing Le Carré – whose memoir about his life as a former spy currently sits in the bestseller lists – wa...

Novelist David Cornwell (AKA John Le Carré) is best known for his spy intrigues. But back in 2003, Cornwell wrote a different sort of "intrigue", one that was not fiction. The essay was entitled: The United States of America Has Gone Mad. On September 20, 2010, Amy Goodman (Democracy Now) invited Cornwell to read an excerpt from his essay. We are reposting here the moment that aired six years ago, if only because it clearly predicted what was to come and helps explain what is possibly coming if the asylum doors are not slowly closed again. Cromwell's is a quiet voice among all of the violence, the confusion, the fear, the anger, and the sense of betrayal mirrored today as the two major parties' National Elections get underway. To hear his words, we'll need to step back a moment out...

Well mama mama, talk to your daughter for me
Well mama mama, talk to your daughter for me
Tell your daughter that I love her now, I'll do anything I can
Tell your daughter I love her, love her till the day I die
Tell your daughter I love her, I'll love her till the day I die
I want to you to talk to your daughter, talk to your daughter for me
I'm loving that woman, I'm crazy about your daughter
I'm waiting for your daughter, I love your daughter
I love your daughter, tell me what I'll do
I said look over here now mama
Ever since mama, your daughter was five years old
I was six years old, we were going to school together mama
I was a natural born fool for your daughter mama
Mama please talk to your daughter
Tell your daughter I love her mama
I love your daughter, do anything she says
Mama talk to your daughter
Mama talk to your daughter
Tell your daughter I love her
Mama talk to your daughter
Tell your daughter I love her
Mama talk to your daughter for me
I'm crazy about your daughter
Mama I'm crazy about your daughter
Mama talk to your daughter
You know that's your daughter
Tell your daughter I love her
Talk to your daughter, talk to your daughter for me
Mama talk to your daughter (repeat)
