The Atacama Region (Spanish: III Región de Atacama) is one of Chile's 15 first order administrative divisions. It comprises three provinces, Chañaral, Copiapó and Huasco. It is bordered to the north by Antofagasta, to the south by Coquimbo, to east with Provinces of Catamarca, La Rioja and San Juan of Argentina, and to the west by the Pacific Ocean. The regional capital Copiapó is located at 806 km (501 mi) north of the country's capital of Santiago. The region occupy the southern portion of Atacama Desert, the rest of the desert is mainly distributed among the other regions of Norte Grande
The Atacama Region is the third least populated region of the country, after Aysen and Magallanes. Of its total population, over 50% are located in the cities of Copiapó and Vallenar.
The largest cities are (2002 census data) Copiapó (125,983 inhabitants), Vallenar (43,750), Caldera (12,776), Chañaral (12,086), El Salvador (8,697) Tierra Amarilla (8,578), and Diego de Almagro (7,951).

The Atacama Desert (Spanish: Desierto de Atacama) is a plateau in South America, covering a 1,000-kilometre (600 mi) strip of land on the Pacific coast, west of the Andes mountains. It is the driest non-polar desert in the world. According to estimates the Atacama Desert proper occupies 105,000 square kilometres (41,000 sq mi), or 128,000 square kilometres (49,000 sq mi) if the barren lower slopes of the Andes are included. Most of the desert is composed of stony terrain, salt lakes (salares), sand, and felsic lava that flows towards the Andes.
The World Wide Fund for Nature defines the Atacama Desert ecoregion as extending from a few kilometers south of the Peru–Chile border to about 30° south latitude. The National Geographic Society considers the coastal area of southern Peru to be part of the Atacama Desert and also includes the deserts south of the Ica Region in Peru.
Peru borders it on the north and the Chilean Matorral ecoregion borders it on the south. To the east lies the less arid Central Andean dry puna ecoregion. The drier portion of this ecoregion is located south of the Loa River between the parallel Sierra Vicuña Mackenna and Cordillera Domeyko. To the north of the Loa lies the Pampa del Tamarugal.

Chile (/ˈtʃɪli/;Spanish: [ˈtʃile]), officially the Republic of Chile (Spanish: República de Chile ), is a South American country occupying a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It borders Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, Argentina to the east, and the Drake Passage in the far south. Chilean territory includes the Pacific islands of Juan Fernández, Salas y Gómez, Desventuradas, and Easter Island in Oceania. Chile also claims about 1,250,000 square kilometres (480,000 sq mi) of Antarctica, although all claims are suspended under the Antarctic Treaty.
The arid Atacama Desert in northern Chile contains great mineral wealth, principally copper. The relatively small central area dominates in terms of population and agricultural resources, and is the cultural and political center from which Chile expanded in the late 19th century when it incorporated its northern and southern regions. Southern Chile is rich in forests and grazing lands, and features a string of volcanoes and lakes. The southern coast is a labyrinth of fjords, inlets, canals, twisting peninsulas, and islands.
Salar de Atacama is the largest salt flat in Chile. It is located 55 km (34 mi) south of San Pedro de Atacama, is surrounded by mountains, and has no drainage outlets. In the east it is enclosed by the main chain of the Andes, while to the west lies a secondary mountain range of the Andes called Cordillera de Domeyko. Large volcanoes dominate the landscape, including the Licancabur, Acamarachi, Aguas Calientes and the Láscar. The last is one of the most active volcanoes in Chile. All of them are located along the eastern side of the Salar de Atacama, forming a generally north-south trending line of volcanoes that separate it from smaller endorheic basins.
The salt flat encompasses 3,000 km2 (1,200 sq mi), is about 100 km (62 mi) long and 80 km (50 mi) wide, which makes it the third largest in the world, after Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia (10,582 km2 (4,086 sq mi)). and Salinas Grandes in Argentina (6,000 km2 (2,300 sq mi)). Its average elevation is about 2,300 m above sea level. The topography of the core portion of the salar exhibits a high level of roughness, the result of evaporation and ephemeral surface water, unlike the most other salt flats, as for example the Salar de Uyuni, which is periodically covered with shallow water.

The Chilean government has declared a state of emergency in the Atacama desert region after flash floods hit what is normally one of the driest regions in the world. The declaration of emergency gives control of the region to the armed forces to “safeguard public order,” a senior government official said on Wednesday. Heavy rains, which began on Tuesday, have flooded the valleys and towns in the region. Roads are blocked and power outages have been reported as authorities scramble to evacuate people. According to a government statement, over 20 people are missing in the flood-hit regions. Local media quoted police officials as say...

Argentina is one of the jewels in the Latin American crown. A vast country stretching 3,500 kilometres from the Bolivian border in the north to Ushuaia and the gateway to Antarctica in the south, it is a place that offers some of the most impressive natural wonders anywhere on earth. It has a world-class tourist infrastructure, with arguably the best cuisine on the continent, and it is safe. But its not just that that makes a trip to Argentina feel so special. The country simply has a redoubtable spirit unlike any other in the region, and nowhere is that more evident than in its lively capital, Buenos Aires. If Argentina is one of the jewels in the Latin American crown, so the cosmopolitan Buenos Aires is one of the standout cities of the continent. Many gateway cities are just that, and...

http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com The Atacama Desert may look barren and desolate but there was always something to see with a good guide like Alex. Llamas, Alpaca, wild and endangered Vicunas, and even a Vizccacha (a cross between a bunny, squirrel and kangaroo). Puritama Hot Springs was on today's itinerary, owned and operated by Explora, a corporation who operates exclusive lodges in remote areas around the world, e.g., a double room for (3) nights costs $4,000 but does include meals and tours; I did say "exclusive." Don't bother visiting their Hot Springs. For $30 US a person, there are more interesting ways to waste money than soaking in tepid water.
San Pedro de Atacama Travel video, They say the high quantities of quartz and copper in the region gives their people positive energy, and the good vibes of northern Chiles number-one Travelist draw, San Pedro de Atacama (elevation 2438m), are sky high. The popularity of this adobe precordillera oasis stems from its position in the heart of some of northern Chiles most spectacular scenery. A short drive away lies the countrys largest salt flat, its edges crinkled by volcanoes (symmetrical Licancábur, at 5916m, looms closest to the village). Here too are fields of steaming geysers, a host of otherworldly rock formations and weird layer-cake landscapes. Wonderful San Pedro de Atacama Travel video

Travel video about nature park Torres del Paine in Chile. The Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, Southern Chile, is one of the most fascinating mountain landscapes on Earth. Its diverse variety of landscapes is captivating, a harmonic union of rock, ice and water that is also the ideal habitat for the indigenous wildlife that lives there. Three high granite mountains tower above the landscape, the 'Paine Towers' or the Torres del Paine. The park derived its name from the rock needles of the wonderful mountain range that is situated in the centre of a remarkable mountain world. Below the 2,800 metre high summits, several rivers dominate the landscape, such as the Rio Grey, on whose banks grow a large variety of plants. A precarious chain bridge crosses the Rio Grey to one of the...

Here we’ll visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Samaipata, the archaeological ruins of El Fuerte and the interesting village of La Higuera, where Che Guevara met his untimely end. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1991, Sucre is undoubtedly Bolivia’s most beautiful town, and is regarded as the symbolic heart of the country. As the location of the first declaration of independence in the Americas from Spain in 1809, Sucre holds a special place in Bolivia’s, if not the entire continents, national psyche. Today it is a pretty colonial town, with elegant administrative buildings, spectacular chu...

It's considered the driest desert in the world with dramatic landscape with some parts of the region that has never received a drop of rain, or at least not as long as people have been keeping track of such things. Nuevo Albergis is the name given to the city that was discovered by Ms. Holly Ahlberg (Nov, 2012) in the Atacama Desert, that to date has not been explored by a significant archaeological team. A number of pilots and explorers have discovered geoglphs in the area, most noteably the giant large anthropomorphic geoglyph known as Cerro Unitas. What Holly discover is amazing.
