This conclusion to the Zatoichi saga comes full circle and returns to several themes encountered in the first Zatoichi Monogatari. For instance, the first battle at night with a lantern that Ichi snuffs out, the famous dice hustle, the tormented Ronin that befriends Ichi, etc. Also, elements from other films are interwoven, such as Ichi falling into a hole on the side of the road because he doesn't trust the local children warning him.
One striking element of this story is Ichi's return to his childhood and dealing with his own separation from his mother. The aged, war-weary, and weather-beaten Ichi takes refuge in a country orphanage, and even takes an birds-egg expelled from the nest and nurtures the hatchling. As always though, Ichi's innocent nature is counterpoised to that of a shrewd and uncompromising swordsman. One moment Ichi is playing with children, the next he's carrying a decapitated head into a mob of yakuza--ostensibly to terrorize and dominate his opponents psychologically.
Unfortunately the editing of the theatrical release was very sloppy. Moreover, an awful 80's style song--with English lyrics!--was plugged in which completely destroyed the historical ambiance of the film. Needless to say these have all been fixed in this edit.

Minor tweaks to this version: adjusted the color to better approximate than did the previous version the early Daiei films; minor cuts to smooth transitions; various sound enhancements. Also, Hasshu's deputy now escapes with the gold strapped to his back after Ichi makes his appearance in the rolling coffin, while everyone is distracted--this makes more sense after all. Lastly, the version uploaded is 29 fps as opposed to the 24 fps of the previous upload.

This split 7" single is Rachael and ICHI's first joint release, a milestone in their musical relationship and a taster of what's in store from them as individuals.
"ICHI's song 'Go Gagambo' opens with a universally recognisable mosquito hum, then proceeds with a catchy, familiar-sounding bass line, strummed out on a long, thin insect-like instrument (home-made), while the vocals are punk-like, small and high-pitched, in the language of the insect itself. It's a song about mistaken identity - (gagambo is an insect unfortunate enough to be mistaken as a big mosquito, resulting in probable death by angry clapping hands), and it is a clever blend of the familiar and the bizarre. ICHI`s simple concepts and playful presentation have universal appeal. When you can't speak the lingo there are many other tools for communication, best of all music itself"

His sister died in the Great Kanto Earthquake and his father is also gone. His brother Jukichi (Ikebe) invites him to stay at his in-laws and works in their family pub. Shujiro is trying to go straight. He lies low, helping his blind mother-in-law and slowly developing a relationship with Ikuye, the hostess who helped him before his arrest. But trouble lurks when the resident gang decides to show its strength. It all leads to a showdown between the two brothers and around 20 sword-wielding gangsters.

This conclusion to the Zatoichi saga comes full circle and returns to several themes encountered in the first Zatoichi Monogatari. For instance, the first battle at night with a lantern that Ichi snuffs out, the famous dice hustle, the tormented Ronin that befriends Ichi, etc. Also, elements from other films are interwoven, such as Ichi falling into a hole on the side of the road because he doesn't trust the local children warning him.
One striking element of this story is Ichi's return to his childhood and dealing with his own separation from his mother. The aged, war-weary, and weather-beaten Ichi takes refuge in a country orphanage, and even takes an birds-egg expelled from the nest and nurtures the hatchling. As always though, Ichi's innocent nature is counterpoised to that of a shrewd and uncompromising swordsman. One moment Ichi is playing with children, the next he's carrying a decapitated head into a mob of yakuza--ostensibly to terrorize and dominate his opponents psychologically.
Unfortunately the editing of the theatrical release was very sloppy. Moreover, an awful 80's style song--with English lyrics!--was plugged in which completely destroyed the historical ambiance of the film. Needless to say these have all been fixed in this edit.

Minor tweaks to this version: adjusted the color to better approximate than did the previous version the early Daiei films; minor cuts to smooth transitions; various sound enhancements. Also, Hasshu's deputy now escapes with the gold strapped to his back after Ichi makes his appearance in the rolling coffin, while everyone is distracted--this makes more sense after all. Lastly, the version uploaded is 29 fps as opposed to the 24 fps of the previous upload.
