Samuel Cook (January 22, 1931 – December 11, 1964), known professionally as Sam Cooke, was an American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur.
Influential as both a singer and composer, he is commonly known as the King of Soul for his distinctive vocals and importance within popular music. His pioneering contributions to soul music contributed to the rise of Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Billy Preston, and popularized the likes of Otis Redding and James Brown.AllMusic biographer Bruce Eder wrote that Cooke was "the inventor of soul music", and possessed "an incredible natural singing voice and a smooth, effortless delivery that has never been surpassed".
Cooke had 30 U.S. top 40 hits between 1957 and 1964, plus three more posthumously. Major hits like "You Send Me", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "Cupid", "Chain Gang", "Wonderful World", and "Twistin' the Night Away" are some of his most popular songs. Cooke was also among the first modern black performers and composers to attend to the business side of his musical career. He founded both a record label and a publishing company as an extension of his careers as a singer and composer. He also took an active part in the civil rights movement.
Black music is a term encompassing music produced or inspired by black people, including Sub-Saharan African music traditions and African popular music as well as the music genres of the African diaspora, including Caribbean music and African American music. These genres include jazz, blues, soul, funk, rock and roll, and more recently rap and hip hop.
In the black culture music is important because it has a unifying quality that works in the same way cultural identity does; it crosses all borders. Music unifies people because all backgrounds can both appreciate the same song even if they have nothing else in common. It is a matter of taste and opinions, not intellectual arguments. Another important fact that ties music to black communities is that it has visible roots in Africa. It was a way that the early slaves could express themselves and communicate when they were being forcibly relocated and when there were restrictions on what cultural activities they could pursue. In a time where their world was being turned upside down, music served as an escape and form of communication/expression for early black communities. The ability of music to act as a binding factor provides the black culture with a strong sense of connectivity. The beginnings of black music as a separate genre in the United States started with the advent of slave spirituals and gospel music.
James Joseph Brown (May 3, 1933 – December 25, 2006) was an American singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer and bandleader. The founding father of funk music and a major figure of 20th century popular music and dance, he is often referred to as the "Godfather of Soul". In a career that spanned six decades, Brown influenced the development of several music genres.
Brown began his career as a gospel singer in Toccoa, Georgia. Joining an R&B vocal group called the Avons that later evolved to become the Flames, Brown served as the group's lead singer. First coming to national public attention in the late 1950s as a member of the singing group the Famous Flames with the hit ballads "Please, Please, Please" and "Try Me", Brown built a reputation as a tireless live performer with the Famous Flames and his backing band, sometimes known as the James Brown Band or the James Brown Orchestra. Brown's success peaked in the 1960s with the live album Live at the Apollo and hit singles such as "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and "It's a Man's Man's Man's World". During the late 1960s, Brown moved from a continuum of blues and gospel-based forms and styles to a profoundly "Africanized" approach to music-making that influenced the development of funk music. By the early 1970s, Brown had fully established the funk sound after the formation of the J.B.s with records such as "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine" and "The Payback". Brown also became notable for songs of social commentary, including the 1968 hit "Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud". Brown continued to perform and record until his death in 2006 from congestive heart failure.
A greatest hits album, sometimes called a "best of" album or a catalog album, is a compilation of songs by a particular artist or band. Most often the track list contains previously released recordings with a high degree of notability. However, to increase the appeal, especially to people who already own the original release, it is common to include remixes and/or alternate takes of popular songs; even new material (previously unreleased). At times a greatest hits compilation is the original release for songs that have themselves been released as a single and charted successfully.
Madonna's The Immaculate Collection is the best selling greatest hits compilation by a solo artist; all of the songs on it are presented in different versions than the original hit versions. The Eagles' Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) is the best selling greatest hits compilation by a group and also one of the ten best selling albums in history. Greatest hits albums are typically produced after an artist has had enough successful songs to fill out an album release. Some artists, such as Mariah Carey, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Kenny Rogers, Aerosmith, Kiss, U2, Dolly Parton, Journey, Los Tigres del Norte, Queen, Kylie Minogue and Billy Joel, have released multiple greatest hits albums through their long careers. Some greatest hits albums are released only at the end of the artist or group's career. For example, My Chemical Romance released a greatest hits album after they disbanded. Other artists, like Eminem have released hits albums in the center of their success. He released Curtain Call: The Hits in 2005 and then Shady XV as a compilation album in 2014.
Aretha Louise Franklin (born March 25, 1942) is an American singer and musician. Franklin began her career singing gospel at her father, minister C. L. Franklin's church as a child. In 1960, at the age of 18, Franklin embarked on a secular career, recording for Columbia Records but only achieving modest success. Following her signing to Atlantic Records in 1967, Franklin achieved commercial acclaim and success with songs such as "Respect", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" and "Think". These hits and more helped her to gain the title The Queen of Soul by the end of the 1960s decade.
Franklin eventually recorded a total of 112 charted singles on Billboard, including 77 Hot 100 entries, 17 top ten pop singles, 100 R&B entries and twenty number-one R&B singles, becoming the most charted female artist in the chart's history. Franklin also recorded acclaimed albums such as I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, Lady Soul, Young, Gifted & Black and Amazing Grace before experiencing problems with her record company by the mid-1970s. After her father was shot in 1979, Franklin left Atlantic and signed with Arista Records, finding success with her part in the film, The Blues Brothers and with the albums, Jump to It and Who's Zoomin' Who?. In 1998, Franklin won international acclaim for singing the opera aria, "Nessun Dorma", at the Grammys of that year replacing Luciano Pavarotti. Later that same year, she scored her final Top 40 recording with "A Rose Is Still a Rose". Franklin's other popular and well known hits include, "Rock Steady", "Something He Can Feel" (from the soundtrack to the 1976 film Sparkle), "Jump to It", "Freeway of Love", "Who's Zoomin' Who", "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves", "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" (with George Michael), "It Isn't, It Wasn't, It Ain't Never Gonna Be" (with Whitney Houston) and a remake of The Rolling Stones song "Jumpin' Jack Flash".

Sam Cooke - Bring It On Home To Me
Sam Cooke was quite simply put, "The Man Who Invented Soul". His voice, phrasing and style would go on to influence a generation of singers in the genres of rock, pop and soul. His influence is evident when listening to artists/fans from the likes of Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding to Rod Stewart, Terence Trent D'arby and Guy Sebastian. This was an exquisite recording from Sam Cooke Live at the Copa performing a medley of songs, namely Try a Little Tenderness, (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons and You Send Me. I would also highly recommend listening to Sam's gospel music from the Soul Stirrers era. His first five gospel recordings define soul music as we know it today. Mary: I gotta change shoes. Mary: Okay, there we go. Now, that’s so much better. Stuart: Ladies and gentlemen, obviously, let’s begin at the beginning. Normally, the protocol is that we give people a round of applause at the end of the event. In this particular case, we’re going to break with all the protocols, because I know a lot of people that are in the audience, I’ve seen faces, I’ve seen people with reputations in the audience, and I think that all of us can say, unanimously that, Mary probably doesn’t really deeply understand how much impact her singing and her reputation has had in our lives, the way it’s shaped the love that we’ve got for the music. So, ladies and gentlemen, Mary Wilson of The Supremes, come on. [applause] Stuart: So, where to start? Let’s start with a quick q...
During the late 1960’s Jazz music was undergoing a major metamorphosis. Miles Davis was musically in transition and went from the traditional acoustic quartet to a more funky electronic sound. Out went the stand-up bass and came the electronic bass. Out with the standard piano and came the Fender Rhodes. Many musicians in what would be hailed as Fusion jazz phase, took rock, soul, and other free form elements and centered it with an electronic base. Musicians like Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Les McCann, Herbie Hancock, and Stevie Wonder used the Fender Rhodes as not a replacement to the standard piano, but as a means to create and experimental sound to evolve with the new music that took the world by storm. Pianist and keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith is a pioneer in the fusion jazz/funk whe...

Abstract What moves us to action? Through this sound scape project we will explore music’s influence on social movements/events in the U.S. and abroad during times of war and peace (ie. The Civil Rights Movement, Apartheid, Occupy Wall Street and Nigeria, The L.A. Riots, Arab Spring, and anti-war movement of the Vietnam War). Think about what movements in history have caused/pushed all people to act no matter their race, religion, age, and/or class? What did music do for these movements and for the people that sacrificed their lives for change? Descriptive Summary This is an exploration of music’s role in driving social movements. With Occupy Wall Street right next door to the students at The New School I wanted to understand why more people and myself in general had not gotten involve...
Upon applying to an internship position at Hootsuite, I was asked to summarize what makes me unique in less than 150 characters. Of course, with my long and decorated history of writing theme songs for social-tech companies, the natural response was to make the staff aware of how I could bring this creative talent to the Hootsuite team. After passing the first-round phone interview, I decided to make good on my promise and deliver a catchy little ditty. The result is this video. I can't take full credit for the song. The melody belongs to a personal favorite: Sam Cooke's 'Cupid.'

The group covers standards such as Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" and James Weldon Johnson's "Lift Every Voice and Sing." In this special edition of The Pace Report, I had the honor of sitting down with Joey and members of The People to discuss the new CD, how they've meshed musically, and why Joey decided to switch from the traditional trio setting to a quartet. Joey DeFrancesco & The People's debut recording "Project Freedom" will be availa...

From the crack of the whip I attack
Front to back in this thing called rap
Diggi dig it like shovel rhyme Devil on a heavenly level
Bang the bass turn up the treble
Radical mind day and night all the time
Seven, fourteen, wise, divine
Maniac, brainiac, winning the game
I'm the miracle Jesse James
I've got the power
I've got the power
I've got the power
I've got the power
Yea, yea, yea, yea
Quality, I possess some say I'm fresh
When my voice goes through the mesh of the
Microphone that I am holding
Copy written lyrics so they can't be stolen
If they are H-Blockx don't need the police
So try to save them your voice will sink
So please stay off my back
Or I will attack and you don't want that
I've got the power
I've got the power
I've got the power
I've got the power
Yea, yea, yea, yea
[incomprehensible]
Like a demon I'm steaming, like a crook I'm fiending
Tell the opposition color whip creaming
Shredding skim with the lyrics rhyme breaking the bone
Through your soul with the tone of my microphone
In this game of life I will try to survive
And take your time you bring us all nose jive
Superman's strong, even in my last hour
H-Blockx in the house T-Love we got the power
I've got the power
I've got the power
I've got the power
I've got the power
Sing along
I've got the power
I've got the power
Stand up, scream
I've got the power
I've got the power
