Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, popularly known as Virginia Tech, is a public, land-grant, research university with a main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia, educational facilities in six regions statewide, and a study-abroad site in Switzerland. The commonwealth's third-largest university and its leading research institution, Virginia Tech offers 225 undergraduate and graduate degree programs to some 29,373 students and manages a research portfolio of US$513 million. The university fulfills its land-grant mission of transforming knowledge to practice through technological leadership and by fueling economic growth and job creation locally, regionally, and across Virginia.
The Virginia Tech Board of Visitors, which serves as the university's governing body, comprises 13 members who are appointed by the governor of Virginia; the president of the state's Board of Agriculture and Consumer Services serves ex-officio as the 14th voting member. Serving as non-voting representatives are the presidents of the university's Faculty Senate and Staff Senate, who serve ex-officio, and an undergraduate student and a graduate student selected through a competitive review process. The endowment is managed by the Virginia Tech Foundation, and as of 2015 topped US$817.8 million.
Virginia (i/vərˈdʒɪnjə/ vər-JIN-yə, UK /vərˈdʒɪniə/ vər-JIN-ee-ə), officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a state located in the South Atlantic region of the United States. Virginia is nicknamed the "Old Dominion" due to its status as the first colonial possession established in mainland British America, and "Mother of Presidents" because eight U.S. presidents were born there, more than any other state. The geography and climate of the Commonwealth are shaped by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay, which provide habitat for much of its flora and fauna. The capital of the Commonwealth is Richmond; Virginia Beach is the most populous city, and Fairfax County is the most populous political subdivision. The Commonwealth's estimated population as of 2014 is over 8.3 million.
The area's history begins with several indigenous groups, including the Powhatan. In 1607 the London Company established the Colony of Virginia as the first permanent New World English colony. Slave labor and the land acquired from displaced Native American tribes each played a significant role in the colony's early politics and plantation economy. Virginia was one of the 13 Colonies in the American Revolution and joined the Confederacy in the American Civil War, during which Richmond was made the Confederate capital and Virginia's northwestern counties seceded to form the state of West Virginia. Although the Commonwealth was under one-party rule for nearly a century following Reconstruction, both major national parties are competitive in modern Virginia.

Eric Standley is an associate professor in the School of Visual Arts in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech. Standley’s artwork is truly cutting edge, with layer upon layer of intricately laser-cut sheets of paper forming a rich, colorful, and detailed whole. He is a pioneer in the techniques used to create his art, which recently started an international buzz with art collectors, blogs, and media, including Wired Magazine UK, Metaal Magazine Netherlands and Discovery Canada. His vector drawings were initially inspired by the geometry in Gothic and Islamic architectural ornamentation. The pieces are painstakingly assembled from laser-cut paper layered to create elaborate three-dimensional works of art. Often these works are created using well over 100 layers...

Virginia Tech College of Engineering researchers have unveiled a life-like, autonomous robotic jellyfish the size and weight of a grown man, 5 foot 7 inches in length and weighing 170 pounds, as part of a U.S. Navy-funded project. The prototype robot, nicknamed Cyro, is a larger model of a robotic jellyfish the same team – headed by Shashank Priya of Blacksburg, Va., and professor of mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech – unveiled in 2012. The earlier robot, dubbed RoboJelly, is roughly the size of a man’s hand, and typical of jellyfish found along beaches.

In 2014, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Freshman of the Year Joey Dance became Tech wrestling's first true freshman to earn All-American honors after going into the NCAA championships as the No. 16 seed and scrapping to take fourth. On the mat, Dance is a fierce blur of speed and force: focused, methodical, dominant. This season, ranked fourth in the nation at 125 pounds, Dance compiled a 24-2 record—including three ACC wins in the Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre in the Moss Arts Center's Street and Davis Performance Hall. In early March, Dance captured his first ACC title and entered the NCAA championships as the No. 3 seed. After losing 7-5 (sudden victory) in the quarterfinals, Dance was then eliminated in the consolation round. See more from the Spring 2015 issue of Virginia Tech Maga...

10 Travel Tips For a New Traveler. 1. Plan and Prepare. Being meticulous about your preparations really made for a seamless trip in the end. There are a few areas you might consider pre-planning and preparing ahead. Find out what travel documentation you will need and get that in place (passports, visas, birth certificates, travel insurance – whatever). Research the basic laws in the country so you can be aware and not have any surprises. 2. Get Immunized. This can take weeks to months to complete, depending on what shots you need, so you'll need to plan this ahead of time. You don't want to end up getting ill while you are on vacation. For example, you should have two sets of immunizations completed before your trip to China, and it took a couple of weeks in between each set.

10 COMMON TRAVEL MISTAKES AND HOW TO AVOID THEM 1. Having an over ambitious itinerary. Instead… Be flexible; don’t be afraid to change your plans due to weather or money shortage. Be aware of the time it takes to get from “A” to “B” (not by distance, but by travel method: car, bus, train, etc). Factor additional time for possible delays as well as extra time to rest. 2. Over packing. Instead… Pack only what you need and know you’ll use, not what you think you’ll use. Buy the rest at your destination (possibly at a fraction of the price). Once fully packed, review everything you have and try to reduce the load a little bit more. 3. Blindly trusting the first directions you get from a local. Instead… Cast a broad net of directions. Ask more than one person for directions to the sam...
