Zhangye (simplified Chinese: 张掖; traditional Chinese: 張掖; pinyin: Zhāngyè) is a prefecture-level city in northwest-central Gansu province, People's Republic of China, bordering Inner Mongolia to the north and Qinghai to the south.
Zhangye is in the center of the Hexi Corridor. The area was the frontier for much of China's history, forming a natural passage to the Central Asian portion of the empire. In fact, the name Zhangye (lit. "to extend the arm") is an abbreviation of 张国臂掖,以通西域 (lit. To extend the arm of the country, through to the Western Realm). During the Western Han dynasty, Chinese armies were often engaged against the Xiongnu in this area. It was also an important section of the Silk Road. The Mongol Emperor Kublai Khan is said to have been born in the Dafo Temple, which is also the site of the longest reclining wooden Buddha in China.
The city was formerly known as Ganzhou (甘州), a name retained both in the municipal region seat Ganzhou District and the Gan of the province of Gansu. In The Travels of Marco Polo, Marco Polo describes spending a year in a city called Campichu, which has been identified with Ganzhou (Zhangye).
The Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park (Chinese: 张掖丹霞国家地质公园), also known as Zhangye Danxia (Landform) Geopark, is located near the city of Zhangye in China's northwestern Gansu province. It covers an area of 510 square kilometres (200 sq mi). Formerly a provincial park and scenic area, it became a national geopark in November 2011. Known for its colorful rock formations, it has been voted by Chinese media outlets as one of the most beautiful landforms in China.
The park is located in the northern foothills of the Qilian Mountains, in the counties of Linze and Sunan, which are under the administration of the prefecture-level city of Zhangye, Gansu province. The main areas of Danxia landform are in Kangle and Baiyin townships.
The core area of the park, Linze Danxia Scenic Area, is located 30 kilometres (19 mi) west of downtown Zhangye and 20 kilometres (12 mi) south of the seat of Linze County. It is the most developed and most visited part of the park. A second scenic area, Binggou (冰沟), located on the north bank of Liyuan River (梨园河), was officially inaugurated on 3 August 2014. Binggou covers an area of 300 square kilometres (120 sq mi), and its elevation ranges from 1,500 to 2,500 meters above sea level. A third area, Sunan Danxia Scenic Area, is located in Ganjun, south of Linze.

The Danxia landform (Chinese: 丹霞地貌; pinyin: dānxiá dìmào) refers to various landscapes found in southeast, southwest and northwest China that "consist of a red bed characterized by steep cliffs". It is a unique type of petrographic geomorphology found in China. Danxia landform is formed from red-coloured sandstones and conglomerates of largely Cretaceous age. The landforms look very much like karst topography that forms in areas underlain by limestones, but since the rocks that form danxia are sandstones and conglomerates, they have been called "pseudo-karst" landforms.
The first studies, on what are now referred to as Danxia landforms, were conducted at Mount Danxia near Shaoguan, China. In the 1920s and 1930s Chinese geologists made an effort to learn more about these interesting geomorphic structures. Danxia landforms are made up uplifted continental crust that has been faulted and eroded, exposing large scarps of layered rock, red in color.
China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a one-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces; five autonomous regions; four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing); two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau); and claims sovereignty over Taiwan.
Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, China is the world's second-largest country by land area, and either the third or fourth-largest by total area, depending on the method of measurement. China's landscape is vast and diverse, ranging from forest steppes and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts in the arid north to subtropical forests in the wetter south. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges separate China from South and Central Asia. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest in the world, run from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated eastern seaboard. China's coastline along the Pacific Ocean is 14,500 kilometres (9,000 mi) long, and is bounded by the Bohai, Yellow, East and South China Seas.

To see the fully edited photos from this shoot, head to http://www.brendansadventures.com/zhangye-danxia-rainbow-mountains-china/ About the Video On my second day in Zhangye China, I headed out of town to one of the most spectacular sights in all of Asia. The mountains are a Danxia Landform and the locals like to call them the Rainbow Mountains. China's Rainbow Mountains live up to the billing, although if you've seen the images elsewhere you know that they were 1) photoshopped pretty hard, and 2) shot at a time of year where there was far more green. When I made it to the Danxia Rainbow Mountains, the scene was pretty yellow and orange because the dry season had already kicked in. Anyways, this episode is the "getting the shot" variety which means that I take you through the process ...
I was really lucky to be able to recover this footage - this is a place that foreigners rarely visit, so I REALLY wanted to show you! The Mati Temple Scenic Area, also named Horse's Hoof Temple, is a distinguished scenic spot integrating grottoes, the scenery of the Qilian Mountain, and Yugur local customs, lying in Sunan Yugur Autonomous County in Zhangye City. Legend about the Horse's Hoof Temple goes that a Chinese Pegasus landed here, leaving a huge horseshoe imprint that can still be seen within the Mati Hall in the temple. Thus the temple got the name “Horse's Hoof Temple”. Mati Temple boasts more than 70 caves and shrines. These grottoes are arranged in the form of a pagoda, with Buddhist halls inside and corridors outside. The total number of caves and shrines both inside and ou...

Gansu Province in China is known as home to the eye candy of Zhangye – an incredible lunar-like landscape, which amazes thousands of visitors with its multitude of red, orange and yellow-hued colors. Many visitors and tourists compare Zhangye Danxia Landform to an artwork, created by the master, who spared no colors. In this case the master is Mother Nature. Geological evidence shows that the Zhangye's Danxia landscape took years to form, as the erosion gradually gnawed at red sandstone, resulting in the formation of isolated peaks and steep outcrops. The erosion, alongside the desert conditions and freeze-thaw peeling created unusually colorful appearance of the Zhangye Danxia landscape (no wonder that in some tourist guides they are mentioned as the Chinese Rainbow Mountains). See m...
It is located at Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park in Gansu Province, a remote region in northern central China. ('Danxia' is the name for a type of rockform, 'Zhangye' being this particular location.)

Top Things to do in China! I know that this is long overdue and that I haven't posted a video in a while, but seriously China!! Anyways, this list is less about the top attractions in China and more about the best ones. Moreover, it features the off the beaten path destinations in China as well. So what are the most incredible things to do in China. Here's my take: 10) Changsha and the Mao Zedong Staute (长沙和毛泽东雕像) This is crazy, in the capital of Hunan Province there's a giant statue of Mao Zedong that looks like something out of Mount Rushmore. Definitely a top thing to see in China. 9) Bifengxia Panda Base (碧峰峡大熊猫保护区) The Panda Center in Chengdu is a bit over-touristed. That's why it's a great option to head to Bifengxia on the edge of the village of Ya'an, and up to this amazing ...
Rocky landscapes of Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park (Danxia) - a unique geological phenomenon located in the southeast of China. Colorful hills formed from red sandstone reminiscent of the perfect painting, created by nature itself. The colors of the geological park, from scarlet to the sky-blue, like the hills of spilled palette of colors. This natural phenomenon - the result of crustal movements, weathering and erosion that occurred over millions of years. Landforms and rocks, a variety of colors, textures and sizes, create a special landscape with many caves, grottos, ravines and valleys and natural columns and towers. In 2010, the Geological Park Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, along with five areas located in the subtropical zone in the southwest of China, was includ...
A fellow Peace Corps Volunteer and I were asked to make a small appearance in this video. After about 50 takes under the hot Zhangye sun and constant vague direction to be more "expressive," this is what resulted. Enjoy the glory of Zhangye and Gansu's tourism sites, masterfully framed and edited by the Gansu Tourism Board of the People's Republic of China.

Try to explain
I know its complicated
But I still have this feeling
More serious than butterflies
My inside's so sore
Finding it hard to let go
Cause I'm still - I'm still in love
I'm in Love
Here we are again
I know I shouldn't give in
But I crave the feeling
Of you giving it back to me
Makes me want you more
Know that this is wrong
But im still - I'm still in love
