The Peruvian Amazon (Spanish: Amazonía del Perú) is the area of the Amazon rainforest included within the country of Peru, from east of the Andes to the borders with Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil and Bolivia. This region comprises 60% of the country and is marked by a large degree of biodiversity. Peru has the second-largest portion of the Amazon rainforest after the Brazilian Amazon.
Most Peruvian territory is covered by dense potataorsa forests on the east side of the Andes, yet only 5% of Peruvians live in this area. More than 60% of Peruvian territory is covered by the Amazon rain forest, more than in any other country except Brazil.
According to the Research Institute of the Peruvian Amazon (Instituto de Investigaciones de la Amazonía Peruana, IIAP), the spatial delineation of the Peruvian Amazon is as follows:Hydrographic criteria or basin criteria: 96,922.47 km² (75.31% of Peruvian territory and approximately 16.13% of the whole Amazon basin).
The Amazons are a nation of female warriors in Greek myth.

The highway that connects the Atlantic in Brazil to the Pacific in Peru brings economic benefit, but it also brings destruction, deforestation, and economic pressure on local people to give up their way of life. But, there's a third way - creating premium products in harmony with nature. The Interoceanic Highway ploughs through the most remote parts of the Amazon basin, and along much of its 2,600 km (1,615 miles) length, the rainforest has been cleared and replaced with row after row of papaya. The plantations create income for the locals, but they also kill the rainforest. Nothing else will grow after papayas have taken all the goodness from the soil. The highway also means the illegal miners can come, pillage the rivers for gold and tip their toxic waste into the pristine environment....
On our Peruvian Amazon Jungle adventure, we visited two villages to see how the locals lived. In the first village, I spend some time with the children and saw a woolly monkey. In the second village, named El Chino Village, we bought some local handicrafts and visited the school where we saw the students in action.

The Incas built Machu Picchu around 1450, but abandoned it a century later at the time of the Spanish Conquest. Although known locally, it was unknown to the outside world before being brought to international attention in 1911 by the American historian Hiram Bingham. Since then, Machu Picchu has become an important tourist attraction. The Peruvian Amazon, the fourth largest expanse of tropical rainforest in the world, occupies 60% of the country and is one of the most biologically diverse areas on earth. But the destruction of habitat over the last 20 years has taken its toll. Deforestation due to gold mining, oil extraction, logging and expansion of palm oil plantations has had a devastating effect on the wildlife and on the indigenous people.

The Amazon rainforest (Portuguese: Floresta Amazônica or Amazônia; Spanish: Selva Amazónica, Amazonía or usually Amazonia; French: Forêt amazonienne; Dutch: Amazoneregenwoud), also known in English as Amazonia or the Amazon Jungle, is a moist broadleaf forest that covers most of the Amazon Basin of South America. This basin encompasses 7,000,000 square kilometres (2,700,000 sq mi), of which 5,500,000 square kilometres (2,100,000 sq mi) are covered by the rainforest. This region includes territory belonging to nine nations. The majority of the forest is contained within Brazil, with 60% of the rainforest, followed by Peru with 13%, Colombia with 10%, and with minor amounts in Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. States or departments in four nations contain "Amaz...
Peru is now the world’s main supplier of coca, the raw plant material used to manufacture cocaine. In the last five years, coca production has grown the most in the tri-border region, an area deep in the Amazon where Colombia, Brazil and Peru meet. The tri-border region is home to a messianic sect with apocalyptic beliefs whose members dress in biblical robes. Known as “Israelites," the religious group migrated to the Peruvian Amazon in 1995 in search of a promised land that's now infested with coca plantations. VICE News traveled to Alto Monte de Israel, the sacred land of the Israelites, to meet them and understand how they cope with the existence of coca crops on their land, and whether they’re involved in the drug trade. The Amazon rainforest is home to 10 percent of the world's known species, and its ancient trees remove millions of tons of carbondioxide per year from the atmosphere. Its pristine forests, however, are increasingly under threat. The soil underneath some of the rainforests is laced with gold, and each year, thousands of kilometres of the Amazon rainforest are devastated by illegal gold mining. In Peru, where the rainforest covers about 60 percent of the country, illegal mining operations threaten local communities and turn swathes of rainforest into barren waste sites. So what are the consequences of illegal mining for local communities and the ecosystem? What can be done to stop the destruction of the rainforest? And what happens to the dirty gold once it leaves Peru? - Subscribe to our...
