Samuel Ray Delany, Jr. (/dəˈleɪni/; born April 1, 1942), Chip Delany to his friends, is an American author, professor and literary critic. His work includes fiction (especially science fiction), memoir, criticism, and essays on sexuality and society.
His science fiction novels include Babel-17, The Einstein Intersection (winners of the Nebula Award for 1966 and 1967 respectively), Nova, Dhalgren, and the Return to Nevèrÿon series. After winning four Nebula awards and two Hugo awards over the course of his career, Delany was inducted by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 2002. From January 2001 until his retirement in May 2015, he was a professor of English and Creative Writing at Temple University in Philadelphia. In 2010 he won the third J. Lloyd Eaton Lifetime Achievement Award in Science Fiction from the academic Eaton Science Fiction Conference at UCR Libraries. The Science Fiction Writers of America named him its 30th SFWA Grand Master in 2013.
Dhalgren is a science fiction novel by Samuel R. Delany. The story begins with a cryptic passage:
to wound the autumnal city.
So howled out for the world to give him a name.
The in-dark answered with wind.
What follows is an extended trip to and through Bellona, a fictional city in the American Midwest cut off from the rest of the world by some unknown catastrophe. William Gibson has referred to Dhalgren as "A riddle that was never meant to be solved."
The city of Bellona is severely damaged; radio, television, and telephones do not reach it. People enter and leave by crossing a bridge on foot.
Inexplicable events punctuate the novel: One night the perpetual cloud cover parts to reveal two moons in the sky. One day a red sun swollen to hundreds of times its normal size rises to terrify the populace, then retreats across the sky to set on the same horizon. Street signs and landmarks shift constantly, while time appears to contract and dilate. Buildings burn for days, but are never consumed, while others burn and later show no signs of damage. Gangs roam the nighttime streets, their members hidden within holographic projections of gigantic insects or mythological creatures. The few people left in Bellona struggle with survival, boredom, and each other.
Jay Scheib (born October 6, 1969) is an American stage director, playwright and artist, noted for his contemporary productions of both classical and new plays and operas. Scheib is a Professor for Music and Theater Arts and director of the Program in Theater Arts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he teaches performance media, motion theater, media and methods, and introduction to directing. Scheib has been a regular guest professor at the Mozarteum Institute für Regie und Schauspiel in Salzburg, Austria, where he conducts an annual "viewpoints and composition" studio.

This isn't my best video or review, but it was so hard to get my thoughts down and film anything, I didn't want to redo it! I think my review boils down to "Dhalgren is hard to understand and I can't explain it very well". I missed many things and I know I didn't appreciate the depth of the novel because of my lack of knowledge. Also, I cut a lot of other thoughts out because this video was HUGE :-) #withcaptions ME ELSEWHERE: Goodreads: http://goodreads.com/koenix LibraryThing: http://www.librarything.com/profile/Koenix Twitter: http://twitter.com/Koenix
"I consider Delany not only one of the most important SF writers of the present generation, but a fascinating writer in general who has invented a new style." —Umberto Eco Samuel R. Delany takes us through his childhood in Harlem and onto his path to becoming the 2013 Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master of science fiction. Get to know the mastermind behind Dhalgren in this profile piece.
I ran across another old recording from when I was working with my friend Quentin Caine Llorente on his rock opera Dhalgren based on the Samuel Delany novel. This particular recording wasn't really meant for public consumption, it was more of a concept piece. An experiment with variations on his theme for the overture. Still, it's all I have left and has been sitting idle since Quentin passed away in November of 2011. So it has sentimental meaning to me and reminds me of my friend.
DON'T: fall for the 2deep4u hype. I'd rate it 2.5-3 /4, depending on your interest

Jim Freund, Max Gladstone, Elizabeth Hand (leader), Shira Lipkin, John Stevens. Samuel R. Delany’s Dhalgren was first published in 1975. It is now widely considered a classic, yet there is also the perception that it is a “difficult” book. How much has it influenced other authors and works? Does its dream-city serve as a predecessor for more recent fantastical places such as Ambergris or New Crobuzon? How have its experiments with the form of the narrative inspired more recent works? And how might a reader approach it for the first time from the vantage point of 2015?

Digerida, muy pronto ha de ser
La carne de sus cuerpos.
Se de ver que van
Con rumbo al matadero
Que no han de volver
A pastorear los suelos
Del llano rural.
Dispuso quien sea dueño.
Pues decide el rumbo final,
Que aguarda el carnicero
Quien sin demorar
Faenará el deshuello.
Para complacer
El carnÃvoro argento.
Sin desperdiciar
Las miasmas de su infierno.
Embutidos, que
Los paladares estan demandando.
Como quien tiene,
Demanda protección.
Con los mios voy
Transportado entre fierros
De rodado audaz.
Lejos del entrevero
Documentación que en digital intento
Fichas saltarán. Para que aguante el diestro
Sin miedo a perder.
Sin esperar recompensa
Por darse.
Guiño de mas,
Que despierta al despierto.
Rebasando estoy.
El vacÃo bostero, de quien va por mas.
Lejos del entrevero.
Dieciocho son las del cerealero
Que quedan atrás,
Mientras yo voy mi suelo.
Embutidos
Los paladares están demandando.
Como quien tiene,
