The most consequential decision President Donald Trump made on immigration in his first year in office wasn’t about the wall, or who’s going to pay for it, or anything else he talked about incessantly on the campaign trail.
It was his decision to announce, on September 5, that his administration would be winding down the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program — a program he didn’t mention outright, that many people didn’t know about and even fewer understood.
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, which has protected nearly 800,000 young adult unauthorized immigrants from deportation and allowed them to work legally since 2012. The immigrants protected through DACA grew up in the US; people might not assume they are unauthorized immigrants, and they might not have even known it themselves until they were teenagers. The program was supposed to give them a chance to build a life here.
Now, DACA is on the chopping block. Trump, under pressure to make a decision about its future before September 5 (the day a group of Republican state officials were set to sue over its constitutionality), has decided that no one new will be protected under the program — and that those currently covered will start to lose their protection and work permits on March 6, 2018.
The prospect of DACA’s demise is throwing the program into sharp relief: calling attention to the “DREAMers” who’ve been able to benefit from it, and the ways in which their lives have been changed over the past five years.

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is an American immigration policy that allows certain undocumented immigrants who entered the country before their 16th birthday and before June 2007 to receive a renewable two-year work permit and exemption from deportation. DACA does confer non-immigrant legal status but does not provide a path to citizenship. It was started by the Obama administration in June 2012.
At the program's start, the Pew Research Center estimated that up to 1.7 million people might be eligible.As of June 2014, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has granted DACA status to about 581,000 people and denied to about 24,000.
In November 2014, U.S. President Barack Obama announced changes to DACA which would expand it to include illegal immigrants who entered the country before 2010, eliminate the requirement that applicants be younger than 31 years old, and lengthen the renewable deferral period to two years. The Pew Research Center estimated that this would increase the number of eligible people by about 330,000.

Childhood
Childhood is the age span ranging from birth to adolescence. According to Piaget's theory of cognitive development, childhood consists of two stages: preoperational stage and concrete operational stage. In developmental psychology, childhood is divided up into the developmental stages of toddlerhood (learning to walk), early childhood (play age), middle childhood (school age), and adolescence (puberty through post-puberty). Various childhood factors could affect a person's attitude formation.
The concept of childhood emerged during the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly through the educational theories of the philosopher John Locke and the growth of books for and about children. Previous to this point, children were often seen as incomplete versions of adults.
Age ranges of childhood
The term childhood is non-specific and can imply a varying range of years in human development. Developmentally and biologically, it refers to the period between infancy and adulthood. In common terms, childhood is considered to start from birth. Some consider childhood as a concept of play and innocence which ends at adolescence. In the legal systems of many countries, there is an age of majority when childhood officially ends and a person legally becomes an adult. The age ranges anywhere from 15 to 21, with 18 being the most common.

DACA is a program where certain individuals may qualify for deferred immigration action and work authorization. The deferred action is for a period of two years and may be renewed. As of January 2017 there are approximately 800,000 people in the DACA program. The majority are in their 20's and arrived into the country when they were 10 years old or younger. The president announced that he had ordered DACA to be repealed on September 05, 2017. This meant that Congress has 6 months to make a decision regarding the Dreamers' immigration status. Congress could choose to pass the DREAM Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act) or develop a new immigration program that would allow for permanent legal residency. Dreamers are individuals who arrived into this country without documents and are currently protected in the DACA program. All new applications for DACA protection will no longer be considered. Applications to renew DACA for permits expiring any time between September 05, 2017 to March 05, 2018 will be processed. These applications must be submitted by or before October 05, 2017. There are many clinics/legal services/immigration services offering DACA renewal services. These clinics will work with applicants to complete all paperwork correctly, put together required documents, and submit the paperwork. The application fee is $495 per application. In June 2012, President Obama issued an excutive order Called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). DACA gives work, school, deporation relief to undocumented youth. DACA was issued after the failure of Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform. On Sept. 5, 2017. at the behest of current president, the Department of Homeland Security, initiated the phase out of DACA. DHS will provide a limited, six-month window during which it will consider certain requests for DACA and applications for work authorization, under specific parameters. Frequently Asked Questions: Rescission Of Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Q7: Once an individual’s DACA expires, will their case be referred to ICE for enforcement purposes? A7: Information provided to USCIS in DACA requests will not be proactively provided to ICE and CBP for the purpose of immigration enforcement proceedings, unless the requestor meets the criteria for the issuance of a Notice To Appear or a referral to ICE under the criteria set forth in USCIS’ Notice to Appear guidance (www.uscis.gov/NTA). The Trump administration has announced the end of the DACA program. The program was a good program, and it created work authorization for people who arrived in the US as children. Here is a video announcement on the situation. For those on DACA, this is a scary and sad time, but please be aware of what the memo actually says: 1. If you currently have DACA approved, you are still allowed to work, and your DACA remains valid. 2. If you have not applied for DACA yet, you will no longer be eligible to apply, they will not be accepting new applications. (But pending applications as of today’s date (9/5/17) will be processed. 3. If your DACA is about to expire (only if it expires before March 5, 2018), you have 1 month - until October 5, 2017 - to submit the renewal request. You must submit your renewal request by that date. 4. If you were hoping to travel on DACA with advanced parole, they will no longer be approving DACA based advanced parole applications. However, if your travel permit was already approved, you should still be allowed to make use of the parole (but speak with your attorney first regarding the risks and benefits). For more information about the program, or the announcement this morning, please see the official DHS memo here. We are sad to see this program end, and we see that the president is putting the ball back in Congress’ court to see what they will do. Hopefully, they come up with a solution by March 5, 2018, because DACA cases set to expire after that date will no longer be eligible to be renewed. DACA is a program where certain individuals may qualify for deferred immigration action and work authorization. The deferred action is for a period of two years and may be renewed.
As of January 2017 there are approximately 800,000 people in the DACA program. The majority are in their 20's and arrived into the country when they were 10 years old or younger.
The president announced that he had ordered DACA to be repealed on September 05, 2017. This meant that Congress has 6 months to make a decision regarding the Dreamers' immigration status. Congress could choose to pass the DREAM Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act) or develop a new immigration program that would allow for permanent legal residency.
Dreamers are individuals who arrived into this country without documents and are currently protected in the DACA program.
All new applications for DACA protection will no longer be considered. Applications to renew DACA for permits expiring any time between September 05, 2017 to March 05, 2018 will be processed. These applications must be submitted by or before October 05, 2017.
There are many clinics/legal services/immigration services offering DACA renewal services. These clinics will work with applicants to complete all paperwork correctly, put together required documents, and submit the paperwork. The application fee is $495 per application.
DCARA's Advocates are available to provide document translation, language advocacy, communication advocacy, and peer support. Today is a sad day for immigrants across the US. The Trump administration has announced the end of the DACA program. The program was a good program, and it created work authorization for people who arrived in the US as children.
Here is a video announcement on the situation.
For those on DACA, this is a scary and sad time, but please be aware of what the memo actually says:
1. If you currently have DACA approved, you are still allowed to work, and your DACA remains valid.

Today is a sad day for immigrants across the US. The Trump administration has announced the end of the DACA program. The program was a good program, and it created work authorization for people who arrived in the US as children.

For those on DACA, this is a scary and sad time, but please be aware of what the memo actually says:
1. If you currently have DACA approved, you are still allowed to work, and your DACA remains valid.

The recent rescission of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has created anxiety and uncertainty for many in the Montgomery College community, in the County, and across the nation. For those not directly impacted by DACA there are also questions about how DACA fits into the larger history of US immigration; how it impacts the labor force; and how the complexities of US immigration policy have evolved. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) relief is available to youth who arrived in the United States before their 16th birthday and were under 31 years of age as of June 15, 2012; have resided continuously in the U.S. for the past five years; and have graduated from or are currently in school or have served in the armed forces. While DACA relief is not a path to permanent residence, it will permit immigrant youth to work lawfully in the United States. On May 11, 2011, then Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid reintroduced the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors [DREAM] Act into the Senate. The DREAM Act would have given conditional residency and more to non-adult illegal immigrants – but it failed to pass. On June 15, 2012, President Barack Obama announced Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals [DACA] - an executive order which bypassed lawmakers and offered similar legal status to an estimated 1.7 million illegal immigrants.
