Travel to Tajikistan probably isn’t your first choice when thinking about a weekend away from Dubai. My first reaction when we booked Tajikistan was… "what have we gotten ourselves into...?"
It is definitely a destination to consider, so let us convince you why we think Tajikistan is the hidden gem of Central Asia.
Between the unexpected language barrier, money issues (see Tips below), cleanliness of the streets, gorgeous landscapes and incredibly friendly people, we had our share of everything that makes a weekend trip like this so special.
So here goes, we'll try to pack as many helpful tips below as possible so you can enjoy an incredible 48 hours of travel to Tajikistan as well.

How to travel to Tajikistan from Dubai?
The best way to travel to Tajikistan from Dubai is by plane. We took a very convenient flight with Somon Air from DXB to Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Comfortable and efficient, the flight cost us AED 1,300 each ($330). Somon Air is the new national airline of Tajikistan and while they remain a majority domestic airline, we were surprised at how clean, comfortable and easy the flight was. Considering it was an airline we had never heard of before and our ticket confirmations were all in Tajik, we were skeptical.
What is the weather like in Tajikistan?
We went to Tajikistan in July, and the weather was absolutely beautiful, especially coming from oven-like Dubai. Think 25 degrees during the day, going down to 20 during the night. No humidity, and sun all day long!
If you are going to head up to the Fann mountains, and you'd be insane not to, bring a long sleeve shirt, especially if you go at night. The mountains were topped with snow, even in the middle of the summer.
What to do during 48 Hours in Tajikistan?
1 - Visit the World's Tallest Flagpole
Dushanbe is the capital of Tajikistan, and while it’s small, it is very lively. The "tallest flag pole" is Trip Advisor’s number 1 attraction, but don't be fooled, it’s worth going to see just to people watch! While the flag and flag pole are interesting themselves it really is the amazingly beautiful setting of the park, the perfectly taken care of gardens, statues, lakes and people strolling that make it so fun to walk through. Drinks and snacks are sold by multiple vendors and you won't need more than a couple bucks to enjoy an afternoon. If you aren't careful, you might get dragged into a Tajik wedding celebration so bring you dancing shoes!
2 -Trek to the Seven Lakes
Hiking and trekking are very popular in Tajikistan. Although they are more suited to a longer stay, it is recommended to tackle the seven lakes trek - made up of seven lakes around the mountains, each one a different color. While a trek will take more time, getting up into the mountains even for a couple hours is an absolute must.
3 - Explore the Hissar Fort
Hissar Fort is only 30 minutes away from Dushanbe city centre, and is an absolute must do. The architecture is gorgeous and the history about it fascinating. We had no idea what to expect but were floored when we arrived to see such an incredible ancient fort, from the 1200's, looking so beautiful and with such a well preserved setting. Getting lost in the old fort and surrounding buildings is very interesting and there is even a watering hole from a natural spring and horseback riding for the kids.
4 - Climb the Fann Mountains
The Fann Mountains are beautiful, and if you have the time we strongly recommend to get up there, if only to admire the view over the valley. If you are scared of heights like me (Anne), it’s a bit of a love/hate moment, but it’s worth it. Stop on the way at one of the artisanal honey making stands along the road and taste organic Tajik honey - honestly the best we’ve ever tasted. Bee careful of bee stings (see what I did there...)
5 - Stroll through Rudaki Park
Rudaki Park (named after the famous Tajik poet) is the central heart beat of Dushanbe and left us quite speechless after getting lost in its seemingly endless sections.
6 - Be a Child at Boghi Poytakht
Plan a trip to Boghi Poytakht Park and the Botanical Garden, both located close to each other on the outskirts of Dushanbe, which is already a small city. The botanical gardens are vast and relaxing to visit while Boghi Poytakht Park is a bustling amusement park complete with roller coasters, a huge ferris wheel and is even connected to a gigantic water park - which we were gutted to run out of time to visit.

In September 2016 we took a spontaneous trip to Central Asian country of Tajikistan, which is less than 3 hours flight from Dubai. We only had two days, spending one of them exploring the capital, Dushanbe, and the second one driving out to the Hissar Fortress and into the Fann mountains to Iskanderkul, one of the most famous lakes in the country. Beautiful trip and with almost no tourism yet.

Gorno-Badakhshan, Tajikistan - Up to 60 percent of families in Tajikistan rely on remittances by relatives working as migrant labourers in Russia.
Yet eco-tourism is a potential source of income for the mountainous country.
Tajikistan has been trying to boost tourism, introducing academic tourism courses in local universities in 2012 but with little focus on outdoor skills.
Christine Oriol, a French development worker, noticed the lack of experienced trekking guides while working on a trekking guidebook for the region and started a training course.
She is teaching a group of young Tajik women crucial outdoor skills, like map reading, pitching tents, getting the stoves going and shouldering heavy backpacks to survive a week out in the Pamir Mountains.
Oriol's course is defying traditions in Tajikistan's Muslim society.
"The mountains I would say is considered mostly as a man's area," she says.
"Women never go to the mountains. There are very few male guides, and women guides absolutely don't exist in Tajikistan."
Tajik women enjoy more freedom than in neighbouring Afghanistan but are often expected to stick to traditional roles.
"Even my family, they are saying it's too hard for you," says Safina Shohaydarova, a tourism graduate.
"They think it's more for men - all this trekking and stuff."

Kyrgyzstan, or the Kyrgyz Republic to give it its official name, is quite simply one of the most interesting, pristine and beautiful countries in Asia, offering the adventurous traveller a rich and rewarding destination. My name is Jonny Bealby, I founded Wild Frontiers, and in this short film I am going to talk about tourism in Kyrgyzstan.
Although small, Kyrgyzstan is perfectly formed. The Tien Shan – or Mountains of Heaven – that stretch across its length and breadth are lush and green, high and wild, dissected by sweeping steppe lands, primal forests, crystal streams, turquoise lakes and lofty snow-capped peaks. I first rode through here on horseback in 1999 while writing a book and making a Discovery Channel film, and I thought then it really was one of the most beautiful countries I had ever visited.
The country is primarily a mountainous land rising in altitude from 400 metres in the Ferghana Valley to over 7,400 metre on the summit of Peak Pobeda. More than half of the country is over 3,000 metres high, while a third is permanently covered in snow. But despite the immense natural beauty of this landlocked Central Asian, Silk Road republic, it is the people themselves that bring Kyrgyzstan to life, and on many of our tours to the country you will stay with local families with whom we have developed special friendships.
So to the country and the main sites you’ll see. Heading east out of the leafy, tree-lined streets of the capital Bishkek – a place renowned for its markets, monuments and excellent museum – you’ll first pass the imposing 11th century Borana Tower, before skirting the edge of Lake Izzy Kul. Here, in the far northeast of the country, you can spend a couple of days on the lake, visit the interesting town of Karakol or head to Karkara Mountain Camp for a bit of helicopter assisted glacier trekking, available every year on our Celestial Mountain Action Adventure.
From here you’ll probably move on around the southern shores of the lake, visiting one of the famous eagle hunters, and possibly trek over the one of the many magnificent passes, before hitting the main road south towards China, and one of the last remaining ancient Silk Road caravanserais at Tash Rabat. Here you can go for walks, or ride one of the local’s horses, all the while staying in one of the traditional yurts while Nazira and her family look after you. People often ask me, where is my favourite place in the world – well, this is right up there; sitting on the hills above the valley is one of the most peaceful settings I know.
From here most will either head over the border to China and the famous Silk Road crossroads town of Kashgar or west across the mountains to another jewel in the Kyrgyz crown, Lake Son Kul. A 3,000 metre high glacial lake, some 40 kilometres in length, again it offers a great place to walk or ride among the hills and meet more of the locals.
As you head further west so you can cross the sensational Ferghana range and visit the region around the Tajik border – particularly travelling up to Peak Lenin base camp – or head down into the Ferghana Valley and the ancient Silk Road town of Osh. Many of our trips come this way as they head into neighbouring Uzbekistan, but continuing on the circuit back round towards Bishkek and you come to yet another wonderful region of natural beauty, Sary Chelek National Park.
At Wild Frontiers we run both small group tours and tailor-made holidays to Kyrgyzstan. While some trips focus solely on this country, others take in Kyrgyzstan on longer journeys through this Silk Road region. It’s also the place that we run one of our best horse riding adventures; loosely following the route I took back in 1999, for those interested in equine holidays, this trip is simply sensational.
As you can see, as far as natural mountain beauty is concerned Kyrgyzstan is unrivalled in the region. It is a country with few political issues, a place with good tourist infrastructure and yet relatively few tourist. It’s a place where you can walk, ride, mountain bike, raft or heli-trek – with us, all on a single trip! – and as of 2012 there are no visa requirements for British and many other nationalities.
As I say when I rode through the country 15 years ago, I knew I had discovered a gem…and so it is today. Kyrgyzstan really is one of adventure travels best kept secrets.

The territory that now constitutes Tajikistan was previously home to several ancient cultures, including the city of Sarazm of the Neolithic and the Bronze Age, and was later home to kingdoms ruled by people of different faiths and cultures, including the Oxus civilization, Andronovo culture, Buddhism, Nestorian Christianity, Zoroastrianism, and Manichaeism. The area has been ruled by numerous empires and dynasties, including the Achaemenid Empire, Sassanian Empire, Hephthalite Empire, Samanid Empire, Mongol Empire, Timurid dynasty, and the Russian Empire. As a result of the breakup of the Soviet Union, Tajikistan became an independent nation in 1991. A civil war was fought almost immediately after independence, lasting from 1992 to 1997. Since the end of the war, newly established political stability and foreign aid have allowed the country's economy to grow.

Yet eco-tourism is a potential source of income for the mountainous country. Tajikistan has been trying to boost tourism, introducing academic tourism courses in local universities in 2012 but with little focus on outdoor skills. Christine Oriol, a French development worker, noticed the lack of experienced trekking guides while working on a trekking guidebook for the region and started a training course. She is teaching a group of young Tajik women crucial outdoor skills, like map reading, pitching tents, getting the stoves going and shouldering heavy backpacks to survive a week out in the Pamir Mountains. Oriol's course is defying traditions in Tajikistan's Muslim society. "The mountains I would say is considered mostly as a man's area," she says. "Women never go to the mountains. There are very few male guides, and women guides absolutely don't exist in Tajikistan." Tajik women enjoy more freedom than in neighbouring Afghanistan but are often expected to stick to traditional roles. "Even my family, they are saying it's too hard for you," says Safina Shohaydarova, a tourism graduate. "They think it's more for men - all this trekking and stuff." -

Kyrgyzstan, or the Kyrgyz Republic to give it its official name, is quite simply one of the most interesting, pristine and beautiful countries in Asia, offering the adventurous traveller a rich and rewarding destination. My name is Jonny Bealby, I founded Wild Frontiers, and in this short film I am going to talk about tourism in Kyrgyzstan. Although small, Kyrgyzstan is perfectly formed. The Tien Shan – or Mountains of Heaven – that stretch across its length and breadth are lush and green, high and wild, dissected by sweeping steppe lands, primal forests, crystal streams, turquoise lakes and lofty snow-capped peaks. I first rode through here on horseback in 1999 while writing a book and making a Discovery Channel film, and I thought then it really was one of the most beautiful countries I had ever visited. The country is primarily a mountainous land rising in altitude from 400 metres in the Ferghana Valley to over 7,400 metre on the summit of Peak Pobeda. More than half of the country is over 3,000 metres high, while a third is permanently covered in snow. But despite the immense natural beauty of this landlocked Central Asian, Silk Road republic, it is the people themselves that bring Kyrgyzstan to life, and on many of our tours to the country you will stay with local families with whom we have developed special friendships. So to the country and the main sites you’ll see. Heading east out of the leafy, tree-lined streets of the capital Bishkek – a place renowned for its markets, monuments and excellent museum – you’ll first pass the imposing 11th century Borana Tower, before skirting the edge of Lake Izzy Kul. Here, in the far northeast of the country, you can spend a couple of days on the lake, visit the interesting town of Karakol or head to Karkara Mountain Camp for a bit of helicopter assisted glacier trekking, available every year on our Celestial Mountain Action Adventure. From here you’ll probably move on around the southern shores of the lake, visiting one of the famous eagle hunters, and possibly trek over the one of the many magnificent passes, before hitting the main road south towards China, and one of the last remaining ancient Silk Road caravanserais at Tash Rabat. Here you can go for walks, or ride one of the local’s horses, all the while staying in one of the traditional yurts while Nazira and her family look after you. People often ask me, where is my favourite place in the world – well, this is right up there; sitting on the hills above the valley is one of the most peaceful settings I know. From here most will either head over the border to China and the famous Silk Road crossroads town of Kashgar or west across the mountains to another jewel in the Kyrgyz crown, Lake Son Kul. A 3,000 metre high glacial lake, some 40 kilometres in length, again it offers a great place to walk or ride among the hills and meet more of the locals. As you head further west so you can cross the sensational Ferghana range and visit the region around the Tajik border – particularly travelling up to Peak Lenin base camp – or head down into the Ferghana Valley and the ancient Silk Road town of Osh. Many of our trips come this way as they head into neighbouring Uzbekistan, but continuing on the circuit back round towards Bishkek and you come to yet another wonderful region of natural beauty, Sary Chelek National Park. At Wild Frontiers we run both small group tours and tailor-made holidays to Kyrgyzstan. While some trips focus solely on this country, others take in Kyrgyzstan on longer journeys through this Silk Road region. It’s also the place that we run one of our best horse riding adventures; loosely following the route I took back in 1999, for those interested in equine holidays, this trip is simply sensational. As you can see, as far as natural mountain beauty is concerned Kyrgyzstan is unrivalled in the region. It is a country with few political issues, a place with good tourist infrastructure and yet relatively few tourist. It’s a place where you can walk, ride, mountain bike, raft or heli-trek – with us, all on a single trip! – and as of 2012 there are no visa requirements for British and many other nationalities. As I say when I rode through the country 15 years ago, I knew I had discovered a gem…and so it is today. Kyrgyzstan really is one of adventure travels best kept secrets. -

It is bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and China to the east. Pakistan lies to the south, separated by the narrow Wakhan Corridor. Traditional homelands of Tajik people included present-day Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. The territory that now constitutes Tajikistan was previously home to several ancient cultures, including the city of Sarazm[6] of the Neolithic and the Bronze Age, and was later home to kingdoms ruled by people of different faiths and cultures, including the Oxus civilization, Andronovo culture, Buddhism, Nestorian Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism and Islam. The area has been ruled by numerous empires and dynasties, including the Achaemenid Empire, Sasanian Empire, Hephthalite Empire, Samanid Empire, Mongol Empire, Timurid dynasty, and the Russian Empire. As a result of the breakup of the Soviet Union, Tajikistan became an independent nation in 1991. A civil war was fought almost immediately after independence, lasting from 1992 to 1997. Since the end of the war, newly established political stability and foreign aid have allowed the country's economy to grow. Tajikistan is a presidential republic consisting of four provinces. Most of Tajikistan's 8 million people belong to the Tajik ethnic group, who speak Tajik (a dialect of Persian). Many Tajiks also speak Russian as their second language. Mountains cover more than 90% of the country. It has a transition economy that is highly dependent on remittances, aluminium and cotton production. -

Early in the morning, the convoy with three drivers arrived at our hotel in Dushanbe. They will take us from Dushanbe through the Pamir to Osh in Kyrgyzstan. Shane Dallas, also known as the Travel Camel, has brought together the participants of this tour. He is waiting for the drivers and the guide in the lobby of the Hotel Lotus. The executing organization is Pamir Guides, based in Murghab. In fact, most of the drivers and guides of the company live in Osh but originate from Murgab or the surrounding area. After a first get-together, we stow our luggage and set off. Destination of the first day is Kalaikhum, about 370 km away. Shortly after Dushanbe, we are stopped on the first long straight road section. A policeman waved with a radar gun around in the air. It did not look like he could carry out a sensible measurement this way. Even so, the drivers had to pay for the supposedly too fast driving. The Pamir Highway usually leads directly from Dushanbe to Kalaikhum. This route is also known as the northern route. The southern route leads via Hulbuk and Kulob to the valley of the Panj River. Many members of the Tajik government of Duschanbe originate from this region. This route is longer than the northern one, but the road surface is much better. At that time we do not yet appreciate this. From Dushanbe, we drive eastwards but turn to the south after approx. 20 km. Then the road climbs continuously. After a short time, we pass the 4.5-kilometer-long Khatlon Tunnel (formerly called Chormaghzak Tunnel) before the road descends again into the Vakhsh Valley. A bridge crosses the river west of Nurek City. Immediately afterward, the road climbs again and leads through the approximately 2.2 km long Shar-Shar Tunnel, renamed Ozodi (Freedom) Tunnel. Leaving the tunnel, the view opens towards the Nurek Dam, currently the highest dam in the world. A 300 m high dam holds back the lake to more than 70 km in length. It was built with Soviet help in 1961. An even higher dam with a height of 335 m is upstream under construction. It is to generate electricity for two further aluminum plants and for the export. The making of the two tunnels started with Chinese help in 2007. Der Pamir Highway führt normalerweise direkt von Duschanbe nach Kalaikhum. Dieser Weg wird auch als die nördliche Strecke bezeichnet. Die südliche Strecke führt über Hulbuk und Kulob in das Tal des Pandsch. Aus dieser Gegend stammen viele Mitglieder der tadschikischen Regierung in Duschanbe. Diese Strecke ist länger als die nördliche, aber der Straßenbelag ist viel besser. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt wissen wir dies aber noch nicht zu schätzen. Von Duschanbe aus fahren wir nach Osten, biegen aber nach ca. 20 km nach Süden ab. Danach beginnt die Straße stetig anzusteigen. Schon nach kurzer Zeit passieren wir zuerst den knapp 4,5 km langen Chormaghzak (Khatlon) Tunnel bevor die Straße wieder abwärts, in das Tal des Vakhsh (Wachsch) führt. Westlich der Stadt Nurek (Norak) überquert eine Brücke den Fluss. Sofort danach steigt die Straße wieder an und wird durch den ca. 2,2 km langen Shar-Shar (Ozadi) Tunnel geleitet. Nach dem Verlassen des Tunnels wird der Blick freigegeben auf den Nurek Staudamm, den zurzeit höchsten Staudamm der Welt. Eine 300 m hohe Staumauer staut den See auf über 70 km Länge auf. Sie wurde 1961 mit sowjetischer Hilfe gebaut. Ein noch höherer Damm mit 335 m Höhe ist flussaufwärts in Bau. Er soll Strom für zwei weitere Aluminiumwerke und den Export liefern. In September 2016 we took a spontaneous trip to Central Asian country of Tajikistan, which is less than 3 hours flight from Dubai. We only had two days, spending one of them exploring the capital, Dushanbe, and the second one driving out to the Hissar Fortress and into the Fann mountains to Iskanderkul, one of the most famous lakes in the country. Beautiful trip and with almost no tourism yet.

From Dushanbe to Hulbuk - Tajikistan 4K Travel Channel
Early in the morning, the convoy with three drivers arrived at our hotel in Dushanbe. They will take us from Dushanbe through the Pamir to Osh in Kyrgyzstan. Shane Dallas, also known as the Travel Camel, has brought together the participants of this tour. He is waiting for the drivers and the guide in the lobby of the Hotel Lotus. The executing organization is Pamir Guides, based in Murghab. In fact, most of the drivers and guides of the company live in Osh but originate from Murgab or the surrounding area. After a first get-together, we stow our luggage and set off. Destination of the first day is Kalaikhum, about 370 km away. Travel to Tajikistan probably isn’t your first choice when thinking about a weekend away from Dubai. My first reaction when we booked Tajikistan was… "what have we gotten ourselves into...?"
It is definitely a destination to consider, so let us convince you why we think Tajikistan is the hidden gem of Central Asia.
Between the unexpected language barrier, money issues (see Tips below), cleanliness of the streets, gorgeous landscapes and incredibly friendly people, we had our share of everything that makes a weekend trip like this so special.
So here goes, we'll try to pack as many helpful tips below as possible so you can enjoy an incredible 48 hours of travel to Tajikistan as well.
Travel to Tajikistan - Questions & Answers:
How to travel to Tajikistan from Dubai?
The best way to travel to Tajikistan from Dubai is by plane. We took a very convenient flight with Somon Air from DXB to Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Comfortable and efficient, the flight cost us AED 1,300 each ($330). Somon Air is the new national airline of Tajikistan and while they remain a majority domestic airline, we were surprised at how clean, comfortable and easy the flight was. Considering it was an airline we had never heard of before and our ticket confirmations were all in Tajik, we were skeptical.
What is the weather like in Tajikistan?
We went to Tajikistan in July, and the weather was absolutely beautiful, especially coming from oven-like Dubai. Think 25 degrees during the day, going down to 20 during the night. No humidity, and sun all day long!
If you are going to head up to the Fann mountains, and you'd be insane not to, bring a long sleeve shirt, especially if you go at night. The mountains were topped with snow, even in the middle of the summer.
What to do during 48 Hours in Tajikistan?
1 - Visit the World's Tallest Flagpole
Dushanbe is the capital of Tajikistan, and while it’s small, it is very lively. The "tallest flag pole" is Trip Advisor’s number 1 attraction, but don't be fooled, it’s worth going to see just to people watch! While the flag and flag pole are interesting themselves it really is the amazingly beautiful setting of the park, the perfectly taken care of gardens, statues, lakes and people strolling that make it so fun to walk through. Drinks and snacks are sold by multiple vendors and you won't need more than a couple bucks to enjoy an afternoon. If you aren't careful, you might get dragged into a Tajik wedding celebration so bring you dancing shoes!
2 -Trek to the Seven Lakes
Hiking and trekking are very popular in Tajikistan. Although they are more suited to a longer stay, it is recommended to tackle the seven lakes trek - made up of seven lakes around the mountains, each one a different color. While a trek will take more time, getting up into the mountains even for a couple hours is an absolute must.
3 - Explore the Hissar Fort
Hissar Fort is only 30 minutes away from Dushanbe city centre, and is an absolute must do. The architecture is gorgeous and the history about it fascinating. We had no idea what to expect but were floored when we arrived to see such an incredible ancient fort, from the 1200's, looking so beautiful and with such a well preserved setting. Getting lost in the old fort and surrounding buildings is very interesting and there is even a watering hole from a natural spring and horseback riding for the kids.
4 - Climb the Fann Mountains
The Fann Mountains are beautiful, and if you have the time we strongly recommend to get up there, if only to admire the view over the valley. If you are scared of heights like me (Anne), it’s a bit of a love/hate moment, but it’s worth it. Stop on the way at one of the artisanal honey making stands along the road and taste organic Tajik honey - honestly the best we’ve ever tasted. Bee careful of bee stings (see what I did there...)
5 - Stroll through Rudaki Park
Rudaki Park (named after the famous Tajik poet) is the central heart beat of Dushanbe and left us quite speechless after getting lost in its seemingly endless sections.
6 - Be a Child at Boghi Poytakht
Plan a trip to Boghi Poytakht Park and the Botanical Garden, both located close to each other on the outskirts of Dushanbe, which is already a small city. The botanical gardens are vast and relaxing to visit while Boghi Poytakht Park is a bustling amusement park complete with roller coasters, a huge ferris wheel and is even connected to a gigantic water park - which we were gutted to run out of time to visit.

In September 2016 we took a spontaneous trip to Central Asian country of Tajikistan, which is less than 3 hours flight from Dubai. We only had two days, spending one of them exploring the capital, Dushanbe, and the second one driving out to the Hissar Fortress and into the Fann mountains to Iskanderkul, one of the most famous lakes in the country. Beautiful trip and with almost no tourism yet.

Gorno-Badakhshan, Tajikistan - Up to 60 percent of families in Tajikistan rely on remittances by relatives working as migrant labourers in Russia.
Yet eco-tourism is a potential source of income for the mountainous country.
Tajikistan has been trying to boost tourism, introducing academic tourism courses in local universities in 2012 but with little focus on outdoor skills.
Christine Oriol, a French development worker, noticed the lack of experienced trekking guides while working on a trekking guidebook for the region and started a training course.
She is teaching a group of young Tajik women crucial outdoor skills, like map reading, pitching tents, getting the stoves going and shouldering heavy backpacks to survive a week out in the Pamir Mountains.
Oriol's course is defying traditions in Tajikistan's Muslim society.
"The mountains I would say is considered mostly as a man's area," she says.
"Women never go to the mountains. There are very few male guides, and women guides absolutely don't exist in Tajikistan."
Tajik women enjoy more freedom than in neighbouring Afghanistan but are often expected to stick to traditional roles.
"Even my family, they are saying it's too hard for you," says Safina Shohaydarova, a tourism graduate.
"They think it's more for men - all this trekking and stuff."

Christine Oriol, a French development worker, noticed the lack of experienced trekking guides while working on a trekking guidebook for the region and started a training course.
She is teaching a group of young Tajik women crucial outdoor skills, like map reading, pitching tents, getting the stoves going and shouldering heavy backpacks to survive a week out in the Pamir Mountains.
Oriol's course is defying traditions in Tajikistan's Muslim society.
"The mountains I would say is considered mostly as a man's area," she says.
"Women never go to the mountains. There are very few male guides, and women guides absolutely don't exist in Tajikistan."
Tajik women enjoy more freedom than in neighbouring Afghanistan but are often expected to stick to traditional roles.
"Even my family, they are saying it's too hard for you," says Safina Shohaydarova, a tourism graduate.
"They think it's more for men - all this trekking and stuff."

Kyrgyzstan, or the Kyrgyz Republic to give it its official name, is quite simply one of the most interesting, pristine and beautiful countries in Asia, offering the adventurous traveller a rich and rewarding destination. My name is Jonny Bealby, I founded Wild Frontiers, and in this short film I am going to talk about tourism in Kyrgyzstan.
Although small, Kyrgyzstan is perfectly formed. The Tien Shan – or Mountains of Heaven – that stretch across its length and breadth are lush and green, high and wild, dissected by sweeping steppe lands, primal forests, crystal streams, turquoise lakes and lofty snow-capped peaks. I first rode through here on horseback in 1999 while writing a book and making a Discovery Channel film, and I thought then it really was one of the most beautiful countries I had ever visited.
The country is primarily a mountainous land rising in altitude from 400 metres in the Ferghana Valley to over 7,400 metre on the summit of Peak Pobeda. More than half of the country is over 3,000 metres high, while a third is permanently covered in snow. But despite the immense natural beauty of this landlocked Central Asian, Silk Road republic, it is the people themselves that bring Kyrgyzstan to life, and on many of our tours to the country you will stay with local families with whom we have developed special friendships.
So to the country and the main sites you’ll see. Heading east out of the leafy, tree-lined streets of the capital Bishkek – a place renowned for its markets, monuments and excellent museum – you’ll first pass the imposing 11th century Borana Tower, before skirting the edge of Lake Izzy Kul. Here, in the far northeast of the country, you can spend a couple of days on the lake, visit the interesting town of Karakol or head to Karkara Mountain Camp for a bit of helicopter assisted glacier trekking, available every year on our Celestial Mountain Action Adventure.
From here you’ll probably move on around the southern shores of the lake, visiting one of the famous eagle hunters, and possibly trek over the one of the many magnificent passes, before hitting the main road south towards China, and one of the last remaining ancient Silk Road caravanserais at Tash Rabat. Here you can go for walks, or ride one of the local’s horses, all the while staying in one of the traditional yurts while Nazira and her family look after you. People often ask me, where is my favourite place in the world – well, this is right up there; sitting on the hills above the valley is one of the most peaceful settings I know.
From here most will either head over the border to China and the famous Silk Road crossroads town of Kashgar or west across the mountains to another jewel in the Kyrgyz crown, Lake Son Kul. A 3,000 metre high glacial lake, some 40 kilometres in length, again it offers a great place to walk or ride among the hills and meet more of the locals.
As you head further west so you can cross the sensational Ferghana range and visit the region around the Tajik border – particularly travelling up to Peak Lenin base camp – or head down into the Ferghana Valley and the ancient Silk Road town of Osh. Many of our trips come this way as they head into neighbouring Uzbekistan, but continuing on the circuit back round towards Bishkek and you come to yet another wonderful region of natural beauty, Sary Chelek National Park.

While some trips focus solely on this country, others take in Kyrgyzstan on longer journeys through this Silk Road region. Republic of Tajikistan (Tajik: Ҷумҳурии Тоҷикистон, Çumhuriji Toçikiston), is a mountainous, landlocked country in Central Asia with an estimated 8 million people in 2013, and an area of 143,100 km2 (55,300 sq mi). It is bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and China to the east. Pakistan lies to the south, separated by the narrow Wakhan Corridor. Traditional homelands of Tajik people included present-day Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.
The territory that now constitutes Tajikistan was previously home to several ancient cultures, including the city of Sarazm[6] of the Neolithic and the Bronze Age, and was later home to kingdoms ruled by people of different faiths and cultures, including the Oxus civilization, Andronovo culture, Buddhism, Nestorian Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism and Islam. The area has been ruled by numerous empires and dynasties, including the Achaemenid Empire, Sasanian Empire, Hephthalite Empire, Samanid Empire, Mongol Empire, Timurid dynasty, and the Russian Empire. As a result of the breakup of the Soviet Union, Tajikistan became an independent nation in 1991. A civil war was fought almost immediately after independence, lasting from 1992 to 1997. Since the end of the war, newly established political stability and foreign aid have allowed the country's economy to grow.
Tajikistan is a presidential republic consisting of four provinces. Most of Tajikistan's 8 million people belong to the Tajik ethnic group, who speak Tajik (a dialect of Persian). Many Tajiks also speak Russian as their second language. Mountains cover more than 90% of the country. It has a transition economy that is highly dependent on remittances, aluminium and cotton production.

Backpacking in Central Asia, once part of the Soviet Union, should be a no brainer for the adventurous traveler among us.
It seems like the majority of people in the Western world view this region as being dangerous.
The countries all end with “Stan” which means “land of…”.
I loved every minute of traveling in the Stans. I literally fell in love with the charming bazaars, the incredible hospitable people, sleeping in remote Yurtstays and enjoying the breathtaking mountain scenery.
I tried my best to capture as much as authentic footage as possible in order to honor the countries with this shortfilm.
I hope you're gonna enjoy Part I & II: Tajikistan & Kyrgyzstan.

Early in the morning, the convoy with three drivers arrived at our hotel in Dushanbe. They will take us from Dushanbe through the Pamir to Osh in Kyrgyzstan. Shane Dallas, also known as the Travel Camel, has brought together the participants of this tour. He is waiting for the drivers and the guide in the lobby of the Hotel Lotus.
The executing organization is Pamir Guides, based in Murghab. In fact, most of the drivers and guides of the company live in Osh but originate from Murgab or the surrounding area.
After a first get-together, we stow our luggage and set off. Destination of the first day is Kalaikhum, about 370 km away.
Shortly after Dushanbe, we are stopped on the first long straight road section. A policeman waved with a radar gun around in the air. It did not look like he could carry out a sensible measurement this way. Even so, the drivers had to pay for the supposedly too fast driving.
The Pamir Highway usually leads directly from Dushanbe to Kalaikhum. This route is also known as the northern route. The southern route leads via Hulbuk and Kulob to the valley of the Panj River. Many members of the Tajik government of Duschanbe originate from this region. This route is longer than the northern one, but the road surface is much better. At that time we do not yet appreciate this.
From Dushanbe, we drive eastwards but turn to the south after approx. 20 km. Then the road climbs continuously. After a short time, we pass the 4.5-kilometer-long Khatlon Tunnel (formerly called Chormaghzak Tunnel) before the road descends again into the Vakhsh Valley. A bridge crosses the river west of Nurek City.
Immediately afterward, the road climbs again and leads through the approximately 2.2 km long Shar-Shar Tunnel, renamed Ozodi (Freedom) Tunnel. Leaving the tunnel, the view opens towards the Nurek Dam, currently the highest dam in the world. A 300 m high dam holds back the lake to more than 70 km in length. It was built with Soviet help in 1961. An even higher dam with a height of 335 m is upstream under construction. It is to generate electricity for two further aluminum plants and for the export.
The making of the two tunnels started with Chinese help in 2007. China invested a total of $ 720 million in Tajikistan.

Früh am Morgen erreicht der Konvoi mit drei Fahrern unser Hotel in Duschnabe. Sie sollen uns von Duschanbe durch das Pamir nach Osh in Kirgistan bringen. Shane Dallas, alias das Travel Camel, hat die Teilnehmer dieser Tour zusammengebracht. Sprungbereit erwartet er die Fahrer und den Guide in der Lobby des Hotel Lotus.
Durchführende Organisation ist Pamir Guides mit Sitz in Murgab (Murghob). Tatsächlich leben die meisten Fahrer und Guides der Firma in Osh, stammen aber gebürtig aus Murgab oder der Umgebung.
Nach dem ersten Kennenlernen wird das Gepäck verstaut und wir machen uns auf den Weg. Erstes Tagesziel ist Kalaikhum, ca. 370 km entfernt.
Schon kurz nach Duschanbe werden wir auf dem ersten langen geraden Straßenabschnitt unfreiwillig gestoppt. Ein Polizist fuchtelte mit einer Radarpistole in der Luft herum. Es sah nicht danach aus, dass er auf diese Art und Weise eine vernünftige Messung durchführen konnte. Nichtsdestotrotz wurden die Fahrer wegen angeblichem zu schnell Fahren zur Kasse gebeten.
Der Pamir Highway führt normalerweise direkt von Duschanbe nach Kalaikhum. Dieser Weg wird auch als die nördliche Strecke bezeichnet. Die südliche Strecke führt über Hulbuk und Kulob in das Tal des Pandsch. Aus dieser Gegend stammen viele Mitglieder der tadschikischen Regierung in Duschanbe. Diese Strecke ist länger als die nördliche, aber der Straßenbelag ist viel besser. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt wissen wir dies aber noch nicht zu schätzen.
Von Duschanbe aus fahren wir nach Osten, biegen aber nach ca. 20 km nach Süden ab. Danach beginnt die Straße stetig anzusteigen. Schon nach kurzer Zeit passieren wir zuerst den knapp 4,5 km langen Chormaghzak (Khatlon) Tunnel bevor die Straße wieder abwärts, in das Tal des Vakhsh (Wachsch) führt. Westlich der Stadt Nurek (Norak) überquert eine Brücke den Fluss.
Sofort danach steigt die Straße wieder an und wird durch den ca. 2,2 km langen Shar-Shar (Ozadi) Tunnel geleitet. Nach dem Verlassen des Tunnels wird der Blick freigegeben auf den Nurek Staudamm, den zurzeit höchsten Staudamm der Welt. Eine 300 m hohe Staumauer staut den See auf über 70 km Länge auf. Sie wurde 1961 mit sowjetischer Hilfe gebaut. Ein noch höherer Damm mit 335 m Höhe ist flussaufwärts in Bau. Er soll Strom für zwei weitere Aluminiumwerke und den Export liefern.
Der Bau der beiden Tunnel wurde 2007 mit chinesischer Hilfe gestartet. China investierte insgesamt $720 Millionen in Tadschikistan.

Early in the morning, the convoy with three drivers arrived at our hotel in Dushanbe. They will take us from Dushanbe through the Pamir to Osh in Kyrgyzstan. Shane Dallas, also known as the Travel Camel, has brought together the participants of this tour. He is waiting for the drivers and the guide in the lobby of the Hotel Lotus.
The executing organization is Pamir Guides, based in Murghab. In fact, most of the drivers and guides of the company live in Osh but originate from Murgab or the surrounding area.
After a first get-together, we stow our luggage and set off. Destination of the first day is Kalaikhum, about 370 km away.
Shortly after Dushanbe, we are stopped on the first long straight road section. A policeman waved with a radar gun around in the air. It did not look like he could carry out a sensible measurement this way. Even so, the drivers had to pay for the supposedly too fast driving.
The Pamir Highway usually leads directly from Dushanbe to Kalaikhum. This route is also known as the northern route. The southern route leads via Hulbuk and Kulob to the valley of the Panj River. Many members of the Tajik government of Duschanbe originate from this region. This route is longer than the northern one, but the road surface is much better. At that time we do not yet appreciate this.
From Dushanbe, we drive eastwards but turn to the south after approx. 20 km. Then the road climbs continuously. After a short time, we pass the 4.5-kilometer-long Khatlon Tunnel (formerly called Chormaghzak Tunnel) before the road descends again into the Vakhsh Valley. A bridge crosses the river west of Nurek City.
Immediately afterward, the road climbs again and leads through the approximately 2.2 km long Shar-Shar Tunnel, renamed Ozodi (Freedom) Tunnel. Leaving the tunnel, the view opens towards the Nurek Dam, currently the highest dam in the world. A 300 m high dam holds back the lake to more than 70 km in length. It was built with Soviet help in 1961. An even higher dam with a height of 335 m is upstream under construction. It is to generate electricity for two further aluminum plants and for the export.
The making of the two tunnels started with Chinese help in 2007. China invested a total of $ 720 million in Tajikistan.
