Kurdish civilians fear they will become targets if Turkey follows through with its threat to move against Kurdish fighters in Syria, which it calls "terrorists". The Turkish military is preparing a strike against YPG fighters, who form part of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces.
Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the NATO military alliance for support, accusing the US of violating its border.
He says his military's operation is likely to centre on Afrin - and include Syrian rebels.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday that the formation of a zone controlled by US-backed fighters could lead to the partition of Syria. The US has confirmed it is helping Syrian Kurdish fighters set up a border force of 30,000 personnel.
The troops will patrol the borders of territory carved out of northern Syria by the Syrian Democratic Forces, which are mainly composed of Kurdish YPG fighters.
The move has angered Russia, which still has troops in Syria, as well as NATO-member Turkey, which considers the YPG a terrorist group.

Despite sustained international pressure, the Kurdish regional government in Iraq held the its first-ever vote on independence. Celebrations took place across the official Kurdish region - away from the central Iraqi government. 32 million Kurdish people occupy a region across Iraq, Turkey, Syria and Iran - but do not have their own country. 6 million of them live Iraq. But controversy arose when it was announced that the vote wouldn’t just include the semi-autonomous Kurdish region but also the oil-rich disputed areas- claimed by both the federal and regional government.
VICE News was on the ground in Erbil and spoke to Kurds as they cast their vote with the whole world watching.

Turkey (
i/ˈtÉœË?rki/; Turkish: Türkiye [ˈtyɾcije]), officially the Republic of Turkey (Turkish: 
 Türkiye Cumhuriyeti ), is a parliamentary republic in Eurasia, largely located in Western Asia, with the smaller portion of Eastern Thrace in Southeast Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight countries: Syria and Iraq to the south; Iran, Armenia, and the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan to the east; Georgia to the northeast; Bulgaria to the northwest; and Greece to the west. The Black Sea is to the north, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Aegean Sea to the west. The Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles (which together form the Turkish Straits) demarcate the boundary between Thrace and Anatolia; they also separate Europe and Asia. Turkey's location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia makes it a country of significant geostrategic importance.
Turkey has been inhabited since the paleolithic age, including various ancient Anatolian civilizations, Aeolian, Dorian and Ionian Greeks, Thracians, Armenians, and Assyrians. After Alexander the Great's conquest, the area was Hellenized, a process which continued under the Roman Empire and its transition into the Byzantine Empire. The Seljuk Turks began migrating into the area in the 11th century, starting the process of Turkification, which was greatly accelerated by the Seljuk victory over the Byzantines at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071. The Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm ruled Anatolia until the Mongol invasion in 1243, upon which it disintegrated into several small Turkish beyliks.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday that the formation of a zone controlled by US-backed fighters could lead to the partition of Syria. The US has confirmed it is helping Syrian Kurdish fighters set up a border force of 30,000 personnel.
The troops will patrol the borders of territory carved out of northern Syria by the Syrian Democratic Forces, which are mainly composed of Kurdish YPG fighters.
The move has angered Russia, which still has troops in Syria, as well as NATO-member Turkey, which considers the YPG a terrorist group.

Celebrations took place across the official Kurdish region - away from the central Iraqi government. 32 million Kurdish people occupy a region across Iraq, Turkey, Syria and Iran - but do not have their own country. 6 million of them live Iraq. That was in response to a request by US secretary of state Rex Tillerson to postpone the referendum.
During a telephone call on Thursday, Tillerson told Masoud Barzani that he favours dialogue instead, between the Kurdish region and the Iraqi government.
The US and other Western nations are worried the vote, could lead to renewed conflict with the Iraqi government in Baghdad and distract the Kurds from fighting ISIL.

Kurds are one of the largest ethnic groups in the world, around 40 million, marginalized with no state of their own. They stretch across an area including Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran. The only internationally recognized Kurdish entity exists in Iraq with its own regional government, a booming economy, and security forces known as the Peshmerga.
Until 1991, it was illegal to speak Kurdish in public in Turkey. Broadcasting in Kurdish was banned until 2002, and until 2003, parents were forbidden to give their children Kurdish names. Kurdish-language public education is still heavily contested, with many Kurdish children forced to take classes in Turkish, a language they rarely learn at home.
The PKK has moderated its demands ahead of expected peace talks, and jailed leader Abdullah Ocallan has renounced violence and abandoned his goal of a separate state. For his part, Erdogan has advanced peace efforts more than his predecessors, promising long withheld cultural and language rights for Kurds.
But Turkey still has a long way to go before Kurds are treated with proper respect, said Raci Bilici, president of the Diyarbakir branch of the Human Rights Association, a Turkish rights group. The government still uses opaque anti-terrorism laws to oppress and detain Kurds, he adds.

For over a year Kurdish forces have united in defence against bloody IS attacks. So how have Islamic State still managed to recruit hundreds of young Kurds to fight for the Caliphate against their own families?
"There are Kurdish families in Halabja whose sons are in IS and their hearts are broken, but I'll never go to their funerals", says the grieving mother of Kaihan Borhan, a Kurd who died fighting with the Peshmarga against IS. Her family is distraught that the people responsible for his death could well be Kurdish nationals. "I have a friend whose brother died fighting for ISIS", says Kaihan's brother. "I never grieved for him and my friend cannot bear to look me in the eye." In this report we see the path to extremism that many Kurds have taken. Dissatisfaction at the Kurdish Intelligence service, Asayish's persecution of Muslims and domestic grievances are being skilfully exploited by IS propaganda, led by Khattab Al-Kurdi and his Saladin Brigade. For over a year Kurdish forces have united in defence against bloody IS attacks. So how have Islamic State still managed to recruit hundreds of young Kurds to fight for the Caliphate against their own families?
"There are Kurdish families in Halabja whose sons are in IS and their hearts are broken, but I'll never go to their funerals", says the grieving mother of Kaihan Borhan, a Kurd who died fighting with the Peshmarga against IS. Her family is distraught that the people responsible for his death could well be Kurdish nationals. "I have a friend whose brother died fighting for ISIS", says Kaihan's brother. "I never grieved for him and my friend cannot bear to look me in the eye." In this report we see the path to extremism that many Kurds have taken. Dissatisfaction at the Kurdish Intelligence service, Asayish's persecution of Muslims and domestic grievances are being skilfully exploited by IS propaganda, led by Khattab Al-Kurdi and his Saladin Brigade. Anyway, in this video I'm giving you a little insight into the Kurdish culture and our traditions. We celebrated Newroz last week which is the Kurdish New Year (even though I think this tradition originally came from the Persians).
FUN FACT: In the Kurdish calendar it's not 2017 but 2717!!
