Great Buddha or Giant Buddha may refer to:
Leshan (simplified Chinese: 乐山; traditional Chinese: 樂山; pinyin: Lèshān; literally: "Happy mountain"; Sichuanese Pinyin: No2san1; local pronunciation: [nʊʔ˧sã˥]) is a prefecture-level city located at the confluence of the Dadu and Min rivers in Sichuan Province, China. Leshan is located on the southwestern fringe of the Red Basin in southern Sichuan, about 120 km (75 mi) from Chengdu. At the 2010 census, its population was 3,235,759 whom 662,814 lived in the built-up (or metro) area made of Shizhong district, as Wutongqiao and Jinkouhe districts are not conurbated yet.
In 1996, the Mount Emei Scenic Area, including the Leshan Giant Buddha, the largest stone-carved buddha in the world, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Mount Emei is located within the county-level city of Emeishan, which is under the administrative jurisdiction of Leshan.
The ancestral home of Chinese writer, academic and politician Guo Moruo is preserved in the Shawan District of Leshan.
The Leshan Giant Buddha (simplified Chinese: 乐山大佛; traditional Chinese: 樂山大佛; pinyin: Lèshān Dàfó) is a 71-metre (233 ft) tall stone statue, built during the Tang Dynasty. It is carved out of a cliff face that lies at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi rivers in the southern part of Sichuan province in China, near the city of Leshan. The stone sculpture faces Mount Emei, with the rivers flowing below his feet. It is the largest stone Buddha in the world and it is by far the tallest pre-modern statue in the world.
The Mount Emei Scenic Area, including Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
Construction was started in 713, led by a Chinese monk named Haitong. He hoped that the Buddha would calm the turbulent waters that plagued the shipping vessels traveling down the river. When funding for the project was threatened, he is said to have gouged out his own eyes to show his piety and sincerity. After his death, however, the construction was stuck due to insufficient funding. About 70 years later, a jiedushi decided to sponsor the project and the construction was completed by Haitong's disciples in 803.
Gautama Buddha, also known as Siddhārtha Gautama, Shakyamuni, or simply the Buddha, was a sage on whose teachings Buddhism was founded. He was born in Nepal and is believed to have lived and taught mostly in the eastern part of the Indian subcontinent sometime between the sixth and fourth centuries BCE.
The word Buddha means "awakened one" or "the enlightened one". "Buddha" is also used as a title for the first awakened being in a Yuga era. In most Buddhist traditions, Siddhartha Gautama is regarded as the Supreme Buddha (Pali sammāsambuddha, Sanskrit samyaksaṃbuddha) of the present age. Gautama taught a Middle Way between sensual indulgence and the severe asceticism found in the śramaṇa movement common in his region. He later taught throughout regions of eastern India such as Magadha and Kosala.
Gautama is the primary figure in Buddhism and accounts of his life, discourses, and monastic rules are believed by Buddhists to have been summarized after his death and memorized by his followers. Various collections of teachings attributed to him were passed down by oral tradition and first committed to writing about 400 years later.
Street food is ready-to-eat food or drink sold by a hawker, or vendor, in a street or other public place, such as at a market or fair. It is often sold from a portable food booth, food cart, or food truck and meant for immediate consumption. Some street foods are regional, but many have spread beyond their region of origin. Most street foods are classed as both finger food and fast food, and are cheaper on average than restaurant meals. According to a 2007 study from the Food and Agriculture Organization, 2.5 billion people eat street food every day.
Today, people may purchase street food for a number of reasons, such as to get flavorful food for a reasonable price in a sociable setting, to experience ethnic cuisines, or for nostalgia.
Small fried fish were a street food in ancient Greece, however, Theophrastus held the custom of street food in low regard. Evidence of a large number of street food vendors were discovered during the excavation of Pompeii. Street food was widely consumed by poor urban residents of ancient Rome whose tenement homes did not have ovens or hearths. Here, chickpea soup with bread and grain paste were common meals. In ancient China, street food generally catered to the poor, however, wealthy residents would send servants to buy street food and bring it back for them to eat in their homes.

Third in a series of videos captured in China in 1990, wonderful Chengdu and Leshan brought fascinating history to life amidst superb vistas of Chinese rural lifestyle and culture. Pandas, painting and many other amazing handicrafts by very skilled and intensely industrious people continued to provide a much deeper understanding of this amazingly ancient civilization.and it's gradual emergence to rejoin the rest of the world. Twenty two year old video - shaky though it be - provides a marvellous picture of this ancient land! Enjoy!!
Take a tour of Leshan Giant Buddha in China -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats. Hi, I am Naomi and I am very excited to show you the world's greatest attractions. A local phrase aptly says, "The mountain is a Buddha and the Buddha is a mountain." The Leshan giant Buddha is an imposing figure, enthroned in a sheer cliff face. The statue was built in the 8th century to calm the waters flowing past it's feet. Even seated, this is the largest Buddha statue in the world and is 223 feet tall. The designer, Hai Tong, built in an inventive drainage system that keeps the statue from eroding. Visitors can see the Leshan Buddha from the base, or climb to a platform at ear level. Thank you for watching our travel series. See you next time!

Make sure you see the Leshan Giant Buddha if you are staying in Chengdu. spend a whole day visiting the Giant Buddha, the adjacent oriental gardens and the city of Lashan. After the ferry trip why not take a leisurely stroll along Lashan promenade to see great view of the Leshan hills on the opposite side of the river, and also watch local Chinese playing traditional board games. Leshan is a small city near Chengdu known for its Giant Buddha (the tallest in the world!) but this is not the only thing to see in Leshan 'cause there are also a nice market e the riverside promenade full of taichi trainers and people swimming in the river with the giant shape of the Dafo (Giant Buddha) on the opposite shore. Here I found a glimpse of 'old China days' pre Olympic Games almost gone from great cities like Beijing. We reached Leshan from Chengdu (1 hr) riding a super-fast bullet train that I've seen only in Korea and Japan so far.
Give me faith oh Jah I pray. To face another day ohhhh
Lord give me strength to face another day. Carry on life's road, carry all my load. Give me strength oh Jah to tarry on. Oh my Lord.
Oh Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end
Please hear me when I plead. All help already pass and, all help for years to come. Without who am I could not be. Many are trying to leave you outta their lives. But I wouldn't be so unwise. And so I promise to serve thee. Oh my Lord. And I beg thee some mercy.
Lord, give me strength to face another day. To journey along life's road, to carry my heavy load. Give me strength oh Jah to tarry on. Oh my Lord.
Life has become a burden, living in this evil system. Oh Jah please strengthen me. I can not make it along. I need you as my own. Oh Jah I call on thee. Some are trying to leave you out of their lives. But I wouldn't be so unwise. And so I promise to serve thee with all my all. And I beg thee some mercy.
Lord give me strength to face another day. make it along life's road, carry all my load. Give me strength to tarry on. Oh my lord.
Say, give me strength oh Jah to carry on. And do thy holy word.
Give me strength that I can make my stand. Above the sinking sand.
Many are trying to leave you outta their lives, but I wouldn't be so unwise. And so I promise to serve thee with all my all. And I'm begging thee mercy.
Lord give me strength to face another day. To make it along life's road and carry all my load.
Give me strength oh Jah to tarry on. Oh my Lord.
