At the start of the hearing, Secretary Perry defended his use of private and government planes for official business saying such trips are sometimes necessary to do his job. The department has a history of fiscal and environmental mismanagement. Furthermore, misguided energy regulations have caused large losses to consumers and the broader economy over the decades. Former Governor Rick Perry (R-TX) testified before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on his nomination to be energy secretary in the Trump administration.
In his opening statement, Energy Secretary Nominee Rick Perry addresses previous comments he made about the Department of Energy stating, "my past statements made over five years ago about abolishing the Department of Energy do not reflect my current thinking. In fact, after being briefed on so many of the vital functions of the Department of Energy, I regret recommending its elimination."
