'I'm in Queensland': Schapelle Corby shares 'terrible' pop song

Schapelle Corby shares with her almost 200,000 Instagram followers a cheesy pop song recently put together by an Adelaide university student. Vision: Seven News.

"I wrote this in Cairns for a bit of a laugh and then took it into the studio to produce it and lay down our vocals," the song's producer Natalie Zeleny wrote on social media. "So much fun."

The song, called Palm Trees, features Corby singing: "I'm in Queensland and it is sunny, I have the palm trees behind me".

Commercial breakfast shows were quick to splash the song over people's television screens, with Seven's Sunrise program joking that Corby is Australia's "hottest new songstress".

"She's got a bit of time on her hands now, so I suppose she could dabble in some music," fill-in presenter Matt Doran said. "[But] we are not going to see that on the charts in 2018, are we? The cover art needs a bit of work."

The story has raised eyebrows, with people asking if the song was a deliberate attempt to nab headlines. Others wondered if it was a ploy by Queensland's department of tourism.

"Shame on you [Sunrise] for giving Schapelle Corby any air time," one viewer wrote on Twitter. "She does not deserve it."

Corby, who spent 13 years in Bali after being found guilty of smuggling drugs into Indonesia, is renowned for taunting the media. After her return to Australia in May, she posted a series of videos bragging about how she was able to avoid the TV cameras.

Despite some outlets referring to the song as Corby's debut single, it's unlikely the convicted drug smuggler will pursue a career in music.

Palm Trees is not available on iTunes, Apple Music or Spotify, and her autotuned vocals on the short sample appear to have been plucked from a previous Triple M spoof, which remixed an Instagram post of Corby "mucking around" last July.
