The Republic of Zambia /ˈzæmbiə/ is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, neighbouring the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Tanzania to the north-east, Malawi to the east, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia to the south, and Angola to the west. The capital city is Lusaka, in the south-central part of Zambia. The population is concentrated mainly around Lusaka in the south and the Copperbelt Province to the northwest, the core economic hubs of the country.
Originally inhabited by Khoisan peoples, the region was affected by the Bantu expansion of the thirteenth century. After visits by European explorers in the eighteenth century, Zambia became the British protectorate of Northern Rhodesia towards the end of the nineteenth century. For most of the colonial period, Zambia was governed by an administration appointed from London with the advice of the British South Africa Company.

As the war escalated the Rhodesians increasingly resorted to external raids, attacking targets in Mozambique, Angola and Zambia. Their view of these raids is reproduced in the fictionalised account of the Green Leader raid, Operation Zambezi. The Green Leader raid was not the most significant strategically, but it was the most heavily publicised, within Rhodesia and internationally. One of the factors provoking the Green Leader raid was the shooting down of a Rhodesian Viscount - Rhodesian reaction was recalled internally in "A Deafening Silence" The raid began with an airstrike on the camps, after which helicopter gunships and ground troops would move in. After the first bombs fell came the Rhodesian's propaganda masterstroke. Climbing away after the bomb run, the commander of the rai...

In June 1978 it was learnt that SWAPO was preparing to attack the military bases at Katima Mulilo, Wenela and M''pacha. To meet this attack two combat teams viz Alpha and Bravo were formed. The attack started on 23 August with a stand-off bombardment using 122 mm rockets on Katima Mulilo. One of these penetrated the roof of a barrack killing ten soldiers. After an artillery and mortar battle the two combat units crossed the border. Combat team Bravo's target was a SWAPO base camp approximately 30 km from the Zambian border but they found it deserted and returned to M''pacha without having accomplished this objective. Combat Unit Alpha managed to catch up with the rear guard of a number of fleeing terrorists but were enticed into an ambush. In the fighting which ensued five terrorists w...

The presidential elections and the controversial Zambian National Referendum kicked off today. The polls come just over a year after current leader Edgar Lungu was elected early in 2015 following the death of Michael Sata in 2014. The late Sata became the second Zambian sitting president to die in office after Levy Mwanawasa passed on in 2008. Nine political parties are running for the presidential vote. The incumbent Edgar Lungu of the governing Patriotic Front, and Hakainde Hichilema from the opposition-United Party for National Development are the frontrunners. Zambia is commended for political stability and the power handover there has largely been peaceful. Zambia is a country probably not on the radar of most investors. But like the mighty Zambezi river its named after Zambias economy has been growing slowly and steadily recording a GDP growth rate of over 5% per annum. Now the country is on the brink of change - a new transitional leader Rupiah Banda begins his terms facing a global economic slowdown, a drop in commodity prices and rising food and fuel prices.
Zambia is one of Africa's largest producers of copper but with global prices down, the economy has suffered a huge knock: Some mines are closing, the currency is weaker and the cost of living has gone up. Big industry is reeling from the shocks and small business is shouldering a lot of the burden, too. But surprisingly, some entrepreneurs in the capital city of Lusaka are showing a great deal of resilience. The BBC's Lerato Mbele has been finding out more for Africa Business Report.
Zambia's economy has been growing at a sluggish rate averaging three percent per annum since copper prices dipped two years ago. The cost of living and doing business has been soaring as a result pushing citizens to a corner. The situation is made worse by a government decision to cut fuel subsides last year that led to a 39 percent hike in the price petrol.
Zambia's rich mineral resources are one of the country's most important assets. They contribute to national income, exports, employment and government revenue. As the country looks to the future, Zambia faces important choices on how to manage its mineral wealth. There are trade-offs in the design of the mining fiscal regime. Mining inevitably entails environmental and public health risks. Mining firms make choices about procurement that influences the industry's contribution to the Zambian economy. This brief video introduces the World Bank's Fifth Zambia Economic Brief "Making Mining Work for Zambia: The Economic, Health, and Environmental Nexus of Zambia's Copper Mining Economy," which was released in June 2015. It asks how Zambia can uses its mineral resources to help the country achi...
Zambia's economy should grow by 3 percent this year, largely unchanged from last year as electricity shortages and subdued private sector investment weigh according to the International Monetary Fund. The IMF's forecast was similar to the government's own growth estimate for 2016. The economy expanded by 2.9 percent in 2015. The IMF Mission Chief to Zambia said resolute policy action such as the removal of fuel and electricity subsidies could help Zambia overcome its economic challenges. Zambia began talks with the IMF in March about a potential aid package after agreeing the budget deficit was not sustainable. The government hopes to conclude a programme with the IMF in the first quarter of next year.

What with new construction, increased population and renewed hope for development, Lusaka has become a hub of activity. People are moving in from all over Zambia in search of jobs and opportunity. One of the fastest growing cities in central Africa, it has become a cultural, economic and political hub. It is quite busy, and that makes the markets fun. Because there are so many vendors clamouring for your attention, there are lots of possibilities to bargain. (I think a responsible tourist doesn't bargain too hard!) I have heard that pick-pockets lurk in Lusaka and to be quite careful, but I think that can be said of any big city. The diversity of people and religions keeps things interesting

African cultures and traditions go back far in time. To film a traditional ceremony few know about was an amazing experience. Zambia has over 70 different tribes, each with their own rich culture. Long before David Livingstone discovered and 'named' the Victoria Falls it had always been an integral part in culture of the Mukuni Royal Dynasty that dates back almost 400 years. This incredible waterfall is called Nsyungu Namutitima by the indigenous Leya people, or Mosi-oa-Tunya -- the smoke that thunders. (On a personal note I think its a touch of immense arrogance to have named them after a queen that has no relevance to the people here and one who has never set foot in this country) The Mukuni Royal village, Gundu, is the site where in the 18th Century, the founder, Paramount Chief Mu...

http://www.christianaid.org.uk/ActNow/trace-the-tax/ http://www.christianaid.org.uk/whatwedo/africa/zambia.aspx Despite being the 7th largest producer of copper globally, Zambia is still desperately poor and struggles to meet the needs of its population. This film explores the mining industry in Zambia, and how suspected tax dodging by unscrupulous multinational companies is costing Zambia millions in lost revenue. At the same time it looks at the fledgling healthcare system, which can barely provide the medicines, staff or facilities to meet the needs of the average Zambian, let alone those living in desperate poverty. Christian Aid and its partners believe that tax dodging costs the developing world an estimated $160 billion each year in lost revenue -- money that could be us...
Seven countries in Southern Africa are modelling how to deliver integrated SRHR-HIV services in order to improve uptake. This is Zambia's story. The SRH-HIV Linkages programme aims to link HIV prevention, treatment and care with Sexual Reproductive Health Services. While this may appear logical, it is not the way public health clinics are currently organized in these countries. The programme is about making small subtle changes in health care delivery that have a big impact on the lives of ordinary people. It uses the opportunity to provide comprehensive services to any client who seeks health services at the clinics. If they seek HIV testing, they are also offered family planning, antenatal services, cervical cancer and TB screening, and more. The results suggest that the project has le...
Peace Corps Health Volunteer David Berger shares how engaging with the locals and gaining trust has been an important aspect of his work in malaria prevention in Zambia.
Health experts have long known that lack of vitamin A leads to childhood measles, and blindness, as well as increasing the risks of child deaths and maternal mortality - and so undermining the health and development of many poor developing countries. The problem facing doctors, health workers and government ministries has been how to deliver vitamin A supplements to populations most at risk - and how to help people understand the vital role it can play in protecting their and their children's health. October 2003 Produced by TVE Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

VOA's Brian Padden talks to VOA's health correspondent Linord Moudou via Skype from Zambia about former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush visit to Zambia to promote a health initiative.
The CSIS Global Health Policy Center produced this video during a visit to Zambia in April 2016. It profiles four young Zambian women who describe the stark realities for adolescent girls and young women that fuel the AIDS epidemic – sexual violence, barriers to education and family planning, and gender inequality. Through their stories and insights, the video illustrates that in order to address the AIDS crisis in Southern Africa we must understand the risks that young women face and work to engage and empower them.
In a remote and under-developed town in the Southern province of Zambia, something amazing is happening. World-class audiology assessments are being provided to patients in some of the remotest parts of Zambia. Many of these patients have never seen a doctor of any kind before, certainly not in their own community and certainly not in such an innovative and leading-edge type of clinic. This clinic is a vehicle - a mobile Ear, Nose and Throat clinic specially designed to deliver much-needed health outreach programmes. The mobile clinic is the brainchild of Mr. Kieran O'Driscoll, a consultant ENT Surgeon, usually found at Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore. But Kieran is also the visiting ENT Surgeon at the Beit CURE International Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia, and has, for the past decad...

Found in the centre of western Zambia, Kafue National Park is the oldest and largest of Zambia’s national parks. It covers a massive 22,400 km2. First established as a National Park in the 1950’s by the legendary Norman Carr, Kafue is one of the largest national parks in the whole of Africa. Despite its size and prominent location only two hours drive from Livingstone, it remains little-known and largely unexplored with vast tracts of its virgin bush still untouched. Thanks to its size and variety of habitat types the Kafue holds a fantastic diversity of wildlife. In recent years the Park has seen a well-managed growth in the number of Safari Camps and Lodges that operate in and around the Park. This new interest has brought with it more visitors and investment to the area, notably in in...
Mfuwe Lodge is situated in the South Luangwa National Park, which is towards the north-eastern border of Zambia. This lodge, fully refurbished and upgraded in 2010, is tucked among huge ebony and fig trees on the banks of a tranquil oxbow lagoon. The open plan reception, lounge, dining and bar areas, are under a very high, open sided thatch roof, supported by palm poles, with fireplaces and impressive stone chimneys at opposite ends. This area has a warm, welcoming atmosphere and is furnished in a variety of African styles. There is a secluded library, with its own viewing deck and another huge deck around the swimming pool, which extends over the lagoon. The 18 large, thatched chalets are privately set apart from each other, along the water’s edge, with private viewing decks. Beds are su...

Victoria Falls presents a spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur on the Zambezi River, forming the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It was described by the Kololo tribe living in the area in the 1800’s as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ – ‘The Smoke that Thunders’. In more modern terms Victoria Falls is known as the greatest curtain of falling water in the world. Columns of spray can be seen from miles away as, at the height of the rainy season, more than five hundred million cubic meters of water per minute plummet over the edge, over a width of nearly two kilometres, into a gorge over one hundred meters below. The wide, basalt cliff over which the falls thunder, transforms the Zambezi from a placid river into a ferocious torrent cutting through a series of dramatic gorges. Facing t...

This remote park in the far west is pristine wilderness, which, to the ardent bush-lover, is its biggest attraction, and the rewards are great indeed. The game is spread out across the plains and takes some driving around to find, but to come upon a vast herd of blue wildebeest, a prowling wild dog, or a pride of dozing lions in this forgotten piece of Africa is especially fitting because of its completely natural and uncommercialised state. The birdlife is abundant and the very dramatic storms and lightning rising up on the horizon, contrasting with the green and gold grasslands, create spectacular views and fantastic photographic opportunities. Travel video about destination Victoria Falls. Located in the south of the African continent and located on the Zambia/Zimbabwe border, the Victoria Falls are one of the world's most amazing and impressive wonders of nature.Between February and March when the Zambesi is at its strongest, an average of more than five hundred million litres of water shoot over edge of the waterfall every minute. Indeed, the dimensions of the Victoria Falls beats all records: at an average height of ninety seven metres, the Victoria Falls are around one and a half times as long and also twice as high as the world famous Niagara Falls in North America.Dense tropical rain forests now cover the former basins of earlier waterfalls and have thus created vegetation that would not normally thrive in the surrounding ...

Travel video about destination Chobe River in Zambia. The Chobe River is one of the most important tributaries of the Zambesi that flows into the famous Victoria Falls. The source of the fifteen hundred kilometre long river is situated in the highlands of Angola. The river is named according to the language of the local inhabitants that live along its course. Also known as the Cuando or Linyanti it also acts as a natural frontier for the four neighbouring countries of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The landscape close to the Chobe River is an excellent habitat for the White Tailed Eagle and the African Sea Eagle. The river continuously alters its course and character. Sometimes it looks like a swamp or becomes so wide that it takes on the appearance of a small lake. Just before nig...

Vacation travel video about destination Malawi in Africa. Malawi is the unknown Africa in the south-east of the Continent. A wild country between sea and highlands, a land of contrasts with amazing green mountains and high plateaus but most of all, Lake Malawi. In the north west and on the border with Zambia is the thousand square kilometre Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, home to more than two hundred elephants who, in small groups, visit the Kazuni Safari Camp on their way to the lake. In the Lake Kazuni area there are many hippos and crocodiles which although rarely seen from the shore can certainly be heard at night. The location of the small town of Nkhata Bay is quite spectacular, a large, sheltered bay, accessible via a steep slope. Small boats transport the local people to various loc...
Hey Zambia where you hide?
I could find you if i tried
Here i go, Here i come.
Playing this game so much fun
Playing ghosts in the dark
Country houses far apart
See your grandad smoking pipe,
Hear the birds cry in the night.
See my Emily, calling out to me,
Waving to me from the past.
Merrily we play, Merrilly we play
Vague recollections that last.
Oooh Zambia
Making castles in the sand
See the big ship far from land.
Watch them go, watch them come.
Eating ice cream in the sun.
Hey girl what you do tonight?
Ask your mummy if alright
That your coming out with me,
We'll make love behind the tree.
See my Emily, calling out to me,
Waving to me from the past.
Merrily we play, Merrilly we play
