Border Force boss Roman Quaedvlieg's son pleads guilty to drug charge

The son of the Australian Border Force boss has been fined $500 after being caught with MDMA at a concert by Canadian pop artist The Weeknd.

Che Roman-Dujon Quaedvlieg, 33, fronted the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning, charged with one count of possessing dangerous drugs.

He pleaded guilty, admitting to having a small clip seal bag of ecstasy at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, in Boondall, about 10.30pm on December 6.

Mr Quaedvlieg apologised to the court, saying there was no excuse for what he did.

"Just to add some context around it, the last 12 months hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing," he said.

"I lost an eight-month-old son to SIDS, got diagnosed with depression and developed and overcame a pretty bad painkiller addiction and ultimately this charge.

"I just kind of want to get my life back on track and get it dealt with, your honour."

Police prosecutor Sergeant Henri Rantala said that, after a tip from venue security, police believed Mr Quaedvlieg was showing signs of drug use and had drugs on him.

Officers detained him and found a clip-seal bag containing a "crystal-like" substance, which was found to be MDMA.

No conviction was recorded and he did not comment as he walked out of court.

Australian Border Force Commissioner Roman Quaedvlieg has been on paid leave for more than seven months while under investigation for possible abuse of power in an unrelated matter.

He stepped aside from his $618,000-a-year role on May 29, as the Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity investigated a possible abuse of power.

It is looking into whether he acted improperly by allegedly helping his girlfriend secure a job in the organisation. He denies any wrongdoing.

The Australian Border Force said it would not comment on any alleged matters that did not involve the organisation.
