British Airways is one of the UK's most visible brands, selling Britishness as a mark of quality. But in the last decade, the business has faced financial crisis and today, more people fly Easyjet than BA. As the airline reaches a turning point, the BBC's cameras have been allowed unique access to its inner world, from top level decisions to the daily challenges of a global operation.
This episode explores how the airline tries to persuade people to spend more to fly, revealing the world found behind the 'millionaire's door' at Heathrow Terminal 5, a lounge, restaurant, spa and champagne bar reserved for those select few who are happy to part with small fortunes to fly in the airline's First Class.
Also this episode, a look at how the airline is playing catch-up with some of its rivals as it brings its first A380, the world's biggest passenger plane, into service. Plus, the programme follows 18 anxious new recruits on their journey to become cabin crew with British Airways. With exacting standards of dress, behaviour and knowledge, not all of them will make it through the 6-week training course, designed to uncover who is - and who is not - BA.

Then as you’re about to take off, the crew tell you that you have to turn it off. You’re not using wifi or mobile data, surely there’s no problem? Surely you’re not going to make plane crash? Well, you’re right. Sneaky airline business tactics - Flying millions of people around the world is big business, and airlines do everything they can to maximise their profits, often at our expense. That bit when they come round with the Sky Mall trolley, filled with spirits and perfume? Pets - Some people like to take their pets on holiday, so they load them into little cages and they go on the plane, in the luggage hold. Pilots' Food - In the classic comedy film Airplane, when everyone, including the pilots, who have eaten the fish get sick from food poisoning, chaos and hilarity ensues. The truth about the oxygen masks. - During the safety briefing, assuming you’ve turned off your electronic device, you’ll hear that in an emergency, oxygen masks will drop down. These lovely yellow masks will help you breathe normally at high altitude until cabin pressure is restored. What the airlines don't tell you is that there is only 15 minutes' worth of oxygen in those masks. Don’t worry too much though. 15 minutes should be more than enough time for the pilot to get the plane to a lower altitude, where the air is breathable. What you need to remember is that from the time the masks drop down, you’ve got between 15 and 20 seconds to put it on before you pass out. If you have kids put yours on first before you do theirs. Happy landings - Ever wondered why, if your plane is landing at night, they dim the lights in the cabin when you’re about to land? That's because if the landing goes wrong and they need to evacuate the plane, your eyes are already adjusted to the darkness. You’ll be able to see better you leave the plane, instead of blinking and rubbing your eyes. Pilot power - When you’re on land, you’re subject to the laws laid down by your democratically elected leaders, hopefully. But once those planes doors are shut, you’re in the pilot’s world. He or she is in charge. The captain of the plane can arrest people, issue fines, and even take the will of a dying passenger. Don’t mess. The bathrooms - OK, now on to some very unsavoury business. Whatever you do, do not drink the water in the bathrooms. It’s filthy. The airlines regularly clean the water tank with sanitising products, unfortunately the parasites that call this tank home build up resistance to the chemicals. So they stay there. While we’re on the subject of plane bathrooms, bear in mind that they can unlock from the outside. There’s usually a catch under the ‘No Smoking’ sign that can open the door in an emergency. When things go wrong - Data shows that things go wrong on flights more than we think. At London Heathrow, they get an emergency landing about once a week. Yet if you’re a passenger, you may never even know it’s happening. Communication between the cockpit and cattle class is strictly on a ‘need to know’ basis. Sleep - Pilots’ working rules state that they can be on duty for anything up to 16 hours at a time. That’s a long time, much longer than a truck driver for example, is allowed to drive in one sitting. As a result, it’s not uncommon for a pilot to have a quick nap while flying the plane.

Airline
An airline is a company that provides air transport services for traveling passengers and freight. Airlines lease or own their aircraft with which to supply these services and may form partnerships or alliances with other airlines for mutual benefit. Generally, airline companies are recognized with an air operating certificate or license issued by a governmental aviation body.
Airlines vary from those with a single aircraft carrying mail or cargo, through full-service international airlines operating hundreds of aircraft. Airline services can be categorized as being intercontinental, domestic, regional, or international, and may be operated as scheduled services or charters.
History
The first airlines
DELAG, Deutsche Luftschiffahrts-Aktiengesellschaft was the world's first airline. It was founded on November 16, 1909 with government assistance, and operated airships manufactured by The Zeppelin Corporation. Its headquarters were in Frankfurt. The first fixed wing scheduled air service was started on January 1, 1914 from St. Petersburg, Florida to Tampa, Florida. The four oldest non-dirigible airlines that still exist are Netherlands' KLM, Colombia's Avianca, Australia's Qantas, Polish AeroTarg, and the Czech Republic's Czech Airlines. KLM first flew in May 1920, while Qantas (which stands for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited) was founded in Queensland, Australia, in late 1920.

Singapore Airlines
Singapore Airlines Limited (SIA; SGX: C6L) is the flag carrier of Singapore with its hub at Changi Airport.
The Singapore Airlines group includes many airline-related subsidiaries: SIA Engineering Company handles maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) business across nine countries, with a portfolio of 27 joint ventures, including with Boeing and Rolls-Royce. Singapore Airlines Cargo operate SIA's freighter fleet and manages the cargo-hold capacity in SIA's passenger aircraft. It has three airlines subsidiaries: SilkAir operates regional flights to secondary cities, while Scoot and Tigerair operate in the low-cost carrier sector.
Singapore Airlines was the launch customer for the Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger aircraft. It ranks amongst the top 15 carriers worldwide in terms of revenue passenger kilometres, and 10th in the world for international passengers carried. On 15 December 2010, Singapore Airlines was named by the International Air Transport Association as the second largest airline in the world by market capitalisation, worth of 14 billion US dollars. Singapore Airlines utilises the Singapore Girl as its central figure in its corporate branding. The airline is also regarded as a Singaporean national symbol and icon.

British Airways
British Airways, often shortened to BA, is the flag carrier airline of the United Kingdom and the largest airline in the United Kingdom based on fleet size. When measured by passengers carried, it is second-largest in United Kingdom (behind easyJet). The airline is based in Waterside near its main hub at London Heathrow Airport.
A British Airways Board was established by the United Kingdom government in 1972 to manage the two nationalized airline corporations, British Overseas Airways Corporation and British European Airways, and two smaller, regional airlines, Cambrian Airways, from Cardiff, and Northeast Airlines, from Newcastle upon Tyne. On 31 March 1974, all four companies were merged to form British Airways. After almost 13 years as a state company, British Airways was privatised in February 1987 as part of a wider privatisation plan by the Conservative government. The carrier soon expanded with the acquisition of British Caledonian in 1987, followed by Dan-Air in 1992 and British Midland International in 2012.

Airline Tycoon
Airline Tycoon is a business simulation game by Thomas Holz and Robert Kleinert, in which the player must successfully manage an airline. The original was developed by Spellbound, and published by Infogrames, however, the succeeding versions were published by a variety of publishers. The original Airline Tycoon was created for Windows, however, the later Deluxe version was also ported to Linux, Mac OS X, MorphOS, ZETA, iOS and Android. In this game, like all Tycoon computer games, the objective is to become a tycoon, and in this case, an “Airline Tycoon.” This is achieved through the balance of income and expenditures.
Gameplay
A simulation computer game where the player acts as manager of an airline, competing against three other tycoons. The names of the four tycoons are: Tina Cortez (Sunshine Airways), Siggi Sorglos (Falcon Lines), Igor Tuppolevsky (Phoenix Travel) and Mario Zucchero (Honey Airlines). The player must keep their aircraft in good shape and equip them at such a level as to keep the customers satisfied, buy new planes (from the expensive Airplane Agency or from Mr Schlauberger at the museum who sells old planes at a much lower cost) and take out bank loans if required. The player must also manage their personnel, plan flights, form relationships with the air hostess, buy fuel, attend meetings in the airport manager's office and, if there is the time, slip into Rick's café for a quick cup of coffee. The player can also perform sabotages on the other players. The graphics are bright and decidedly tongue in cheek: the tycoon Igor Tuppolevsky has a set of Russian dolls on his desk—and an open tin of caviar, while Tina Cortez has a picture of a matador and a bull's head.

You’re not using wifi or mobile data, surely there’s no problem? Surely you’re not going to make plane crash? Well, you’re right. Sneaky airline business tactics - Flying millions of people around the world is big business, and airlines do everything they can to maximise their profits, often at our expense. That bit when they come round with the Sky Mall trolley, filled with spirits and perfume? Pets - Some people like to take their pets on holiday, so they load them into little cages and they go on the plane, in the luggage hold. Pilots' Food - In the classic comedy film Airplane, when everyone, including the pilots, who have eaten the fish get sick from food poisoning, chaos and hilarity ensues. The truth about the oxygen masks. - During the safety briefing, assuming you’ve turned off your electronic device, you’ll hear that in an emergency, oxygen masks will drop down. These lovely yellow masks will help you breathe normally at high altitude until cabin pressure is restored. What the airlines don't tell you is that there is only 15 minutes' worth of oxygen in those masks. Don’t worry too much though. 15 minutes should be more than enough time for the pilot to get the plane to a lower altitude, where the air is breathable. What you need to remember is that from the time the masks drop down, you’ve got between 15 and 20 seconds to put it on before you pass out. If you have kids put yours on first before you do theirs. Happy landings - Ever wondered why, if your plane is landing at night, they dim the lights in the cabin when you’re about to land? That's because if the landing goes wrong and they need to evacuate the plane, your eyes are already adjusted to the darkness. You’ll be able to see better you leave the plane, instead of blinking and rubbing your eyes. Pilot power - When you’re on land, you’re subject to the laws laid down by your democratically elected leaders, hopefully. But once those planes doors are shut, you’re in the pilot’s world. He or she is in charge. The captain of the plane can arrest people, issue fines, and even take the will of a dying passenger. Don’t mess. The bathrooms - OK, now on to some very unsavoury business. Whatever you do, do not drink the water in the bathrooms. It’s filthy. The airlines regularly clean the water tank with sanitising products, unfortunately the parasites that call this tank home build up resistance to the chemicals. So they stay there. While we’re on the subject of plane bathrooms, bear in mind that they can unlock from the outside. There’s usually a catch under the ‘No Smoking’ sign that can open the door in an emergency. When things go wrong - Data shows that things go wrong on flights more than we think. At London Heathrow, they get an emergency landing about once a week. Yet if you’re a passenger, you may never even know it’s happening. Communication between the cockpit and cattle class is strictly on a ‘need to know’ basis. Sleep - Pilots’ working rules state that they can be on duty for anything up to 16 hours at a time. That’s a long time, much longer than a truck driver for example, is allowed to drive in one sitting. As a result, it’s not uncommon for a pilot to have a quick nap while flying the plane. -

If you've taken a flight in coach anytime in the last 20 years, you may have noticed the seat in front of you creeping closer and closer to your knees. No, you're not growing. Yes, the airlines have been squishing seats closer together. It's called the pitch, and it's been chopped down by two to three inches over the years. That's not the only place where the big three are sneaking space from you. Here's a helpful representation of just how much room your ticket gets you on your next flight. The following is a transcript of the video. How airline seats have shrunk over the years. Feeling cramped? You're not alone. Airlines are adding more seats, leaving less room for individual passengers. The pitch, or distance between seats, has shrunk. The minimum pitch has gone from 31"/32" to 30". It's not just the pitch. Seat width has also been narrowed over the years. Each airline has lost about 2 inches in seat width. These aren't even the smallest. Some airlines fill the Airbus A330 with 16.7" seats. For comparison, the average first class seat is 21" wide. One small study compared sleep quality in 17" vs. 18" wide seats. 2/3 of passengers who slept in the 18" seats reported better quality sleep. Plus, passengers fell asleep faster and had fewer twitches in the 18" seats. So if you plan on catching some Zzz's on your flight, dish out the cash for a seat upgrade. Yes, the airlines have been squishing seats closer together. It's called the pitch, and it's been chopped down by two to three inches over the years. Well, you’re right. Sneaky airline business tactics - Flying millions of people around the world is big business, and airlines do everything they can to maximise their profits, often at our expense. That bit when they come round with the Sky Mall trolley, filled with spirits and perfume? Pets - Some people like to take their pets on holiday, so they load them into little cages and they go on the plane, in the luggage hold. Pilots' Food - In the classic comedy film Airplane, when everyone, including the pilots, who have eaten the fish get sick from food poisoning, chaos and hilarity ensues. The truth about the oxygen masks. - During the safety briefing, assuming you’ve turned off your electronic device, you’ll hear that in an emergency, oxygen masks will drop down. These lovely yellow masks will help you breathe normally at high altitude until cabin pressure is restored. What the airlines don't tell you is that there is only 15 minutes' worth of oxygen in those masks. Don’t worry too much though. 15 minutes should be more than enough time for the pilot to get the plane to a lower altitude, where the air is breathable. What you need to remember is that from the time the masks drop down, you’ve got between 15 and 20 seconds to put it on before you pass out. If you have kids put yours on first before you do theirs. Happy landings - Ever wondered why, if your plane is landing at night, they dim the lights in the cabin when you’re about to land? That's because if the landing goes wrong and they need to evacuate the plane, your eyes are already adjusted to the darkness. You’ll be able to see better you leave the plane, instead of blinking and rubbing your eyes. Pilot power - When you’re on land, you’re subject to the laws laid down by your democratically elected leaders, hopefully. But once those planes doors are shut, you’re in the pilot’s world. He or she is in charge. The captain of the plane can arrest people, issue fines, and even take the will of a dying passenger. Don’t mess. The bathrooms - OK, now on to some very unsavoury business. Whatever you do, do not drink the water in the bathrooms. It’s filthy. The airlines regularly clean the water tank with sanitising products, unfortunately the parasites that call this tank home build up resistance to the chemicals. So they stay there. While we’re on the subject of plane bathrooms, bear in mind that they can unlock from the outside. There’s usually a catch under the ‘No Smoking’ sign that can open the door in an emergency. When things go wrong - Data shows that things go wrong on flights more than we think. At London Heathrow, they get an emergency landing about once a week. Yet if you’re a passenger, you may never even know it’s happening. Communication between the cockpit and cattle class is strictly on a ‘need to know’ basis. Sleep - Pilots’ working rules state that they can be on duty for anything up to 16 hours at a time. That’s a long time, much longer than a truck driver for example, is allowed to drive in one sitting. As a result, it’s not uncommon for a pilot to have a quick nap while flying the plane.

Yes, the airlines have been squishing seats closer together. It's called the pitch, and it's been chopped down by two to three inches over the years.
That's not the only place where the big three are sneaking space from you. Here's a helpful representation of just how much room your ticket gets you on your next flight. The following is a transcript of the video.
How airline seats have shrunk over the years. Feeling cramped? You're not alone. Airlines are adding more seats, leaving less room for individual passengers. The pitch, or distance between seats, has shrunk. The minimum pitch has gone from 31"/32" to 30".
It's not just the pitch. Seat width has also been narrowed over the years. Each airline has lost about 2 inches in seat width. These aren't even the smallest. Some airlines fill the Airbus A330 with 16.7" seats. For comparison, the average first class seat is 21" wide.
One small study compared sleep quality in 17" vs. 18" wide seats. 2/3 of passengers who slept in the 18" seats reported better quality sleep. Plus, passengers fell asleep faster and had fewer twitches in the 18" seats. So if you plan on catching some Zzz's on your flight, dish out the cash for a seat upgrade.

In this trip report, we take a look at the Singapore Airlines A380 Suites Class on board a flight from Singapore to Tokyo (Narita). The journey begins with our ride dropping us off at the dedicated First Class terminal at Changi airport. Our bags and check-in formalities are handled by the concierge service as we wait comfortably in a lounge area. It's not before we make our way through a private immigration lane, which exits conveniently in front of the SilverKris lounge entrance. The aircraft last made voice contact with air traffic control at 01:19 MYT, 8 March (17:19 UTC, 7 March) when it was over the South China Sea, less than an hour after takeoff. It disappeared from air traffic controllers' radar screens at 01:22 MYT. Malaysian military radar continued to track the aircraft as it deviated westwards from its planned flight path and crossed the Malay Peninsula. It left the range of Malaysian military radar at 02:22 while over the Andaman Sea, 200 nautical miles (370 km) north-west of Penang in north-western Malaysia. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-200ER, was carrying 12 Malaysian crew members and 227 passengers from 15 nations.
A multinational search effort began in the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea, from whence the aircraft's signal was last seen on secondary surveillance radar, and was soon extended to the Strait of Malacca and Andaman Sea. Analysis of satellite communications between the aircraft and Inmarsat's satellite communications network concluded that the flight continued until at least 08:19 and flew south into the southern Indian Ocean, although the precise location cannot be determined. Australia took charge of the search on 17 March, when the search moved to the southern Indian Ocean. On 24 March, the Malaysian government noted that the final location determined by the satellite communication is far from any possible landing sites, and concluded that "Flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean."[3] The current phase of the search, the largest and most expensive in aviation history,[4][5][6] is a comprehensive survey of the sea floor about 1,800 kilometres (970 nmi) south-west of Perth, Western Australia, which began in October 2014. Nothing was found of the aircraft until 29 July 2015, when a piece of marine debris, later confirmed to be a flaperon from Flight 370, washed ashore on Réunion Island. Although multiple additional small pieces of debris have been found, the bulk of the aircraft has still not been located, prompting many theories about its disappearance.

In this trip report, we take a look at the Singapore Airlines A380 Suites Class on board a flight from Singapore to Tokyo (Narita).
The journey begins with our ride dropping us off at the dedicated First Class terminal at Changi airport. Our bags and check-in formalities are handled by the concierge service as we wait comfortably in a lounge area. It's not before we make our way through a private immigration lane, which exits conveniently in front of the SilverKris lounge entrance.
As we're flying in Suites Class, we're granted entrance to the exclusive "Private Room". We indulge in some a-la-carte breakfast in the dining area, and then have a quick look around the lounge before heading to the gate for boarding.
Suites Class passengers board the A380 via a seperate jetbridge that leads directly to the cabin. On the flight, we review the hard product seat in detail. All the nooks and crannies are examined - the seat, the cushion, the leather appointments, the fixed shell surrounding the seat, the IFE screen, the ottoman, the storage spaces, the privacy screen, etc.
This 7 hour flight has only one meal service available. We chose the Japanese fine-dining option, which was the Kyo Kaiseki meal. The highlights include Dom Perignon champagne, Singaporean satay sticks, caviar, lobster, a multi-course Japanese tasting menu, and the Wedgwood bone china the meals are served on. The different seat positions and the double bed are also reviewed in the video. The IFE (also known as KrisWorld) is briefly reviewed as well.
Upon arrival in Tokyo, we quickly breeze through immigration & customs and pick up our baggage. We then catch a pre-arranged limo to the Hilton Tokyo.

Getting a job in the airline industry is not an easy feat. Not only are you required to pass several exams and tests as well as fill out numerous applications, but you’ll also have to attend the dreaded interview if you’re successful. But that’s not all: you’ll also probably be competing against hundreds of other candidates from all over the world for the same job.
You, therefore, need to put your best foot forward if you want to enhance your chances of success, and one way of doing that is to carefully prepare for the interview process. To help you out, we’ve put together this list of the 10 most common questions asked in air hostess interviews along with tips on how to answer them!
1. What do you know about our airline?
Tip: Your potential employers want to know if you did your homework about the airline you’re applying to, so make sure you do enough research into the airline and familiarise yourself with details such as when it began operations, the number of aircraft it owns, its routes and what their plans for the future are. Remember to emphasise all the positive things you have learned about them either through the ‘About’ page on their website, news and magazine articles or sites like Glassdoor. – ultimately, you want to show off your knowledge of the airline.
2. Why do you want to work for our airline?
Tip: Though your main motivation for applying for the job might be the financial rewards it offers, make sure you leave that part out when responding to this question. Instead, talk about the opportunities for growth that working with the airline might offer you. You could also mention something you heard in the news.
3. How long do you expect to work for us if hired?
Tip: This is a perfect opportunity to demonstrate your loyalty to an employer. Make a point to talk about your willingness to grow, learn and improve yourself, and remember to never admit to only applying for this job to acquire enough experience to move onto a bigger airline.
4. What are your strengths?
Tip: Some of the personality traits that airlines actively look for in air hostesses include being an excellent communicator, eager to help others, a fast learner requiring little supervision and outgoing. Teamwork skills, attention to detail and critical thinking are also important. The trick here is to select the qualities that best describe you in order to provide an effective and personalised response.
5. Do you prefer working alone or as part of a team?
Tip: The answer here should be obvious. Airlines are looking for people who work well in a team. You’ll have to convince the interviewer that you are a team player and that you have the ability to follow instructions. Even when you have to work independently, explain that you would want to see your efforts complimenting the collective efforts of the team.
6. How did you deal with a colleague who was not doing their fair share of the work?
Tip: Don’t use this question to disparage your former (or current) colleagues or vent your frustrations. Instead, explain the way your colleague was not doing their job, how you stepped in and what the positive results of your intervention were.
7. Recall a time when you had to deal with a difficult passenger. How did you resolve the issue?
Tip: Don’t make the mistake of blaming the customer when answering this question. Instead, mention how you were empathetic and non-judgemental towards them, and how you showed a sincere desire to help them. Explain what the root cause of their problem was, and how you finally resolved it.
8. What are your hobbies?
Tip: This question is usually asked to assess your general people skills. Therefore, be sure to focus on hobbies that you enjoy doing with others. For example, sports will highlight your cooperative and leadership abilities, while hobbies like hosting friends for dinner will demonstrate your hospitality skills.
9. How will you handle being away from family and friends?
Tip: Be as honest as possible when answering this question. Admit that it will be difficult but that you are willing to adjust to the demands of the job. You could also mention that it will be a great opportunity to experience new cultures and learn new things.
10. Are you seeking openings in other airlines?
Tip: If you are, be truthful about it. It will show your potential employers that you are serious about finding a job as an air hostess. However, mention your preference for the airline you are being interviewed for. For instance, you could say something along the lines of: ‘Though I have applied elsewhere, I believe your airline will offer the best opportunity for career growth’.
