In radio communications, a radio receiver (commonly called a radio) is an electronic device that receives radio waves and converts the information carried by them to a usable form. It is used with an antenna. The antenna intercepts radio waves (electromagnetic waves) and converts them to tiny alternating currents which are applied to the receiver, and the receiver extracts the desired information. The receiver uses electronic filters to separate the desired radio frequency signal from all the other signals picked up by the antenna, an electronic amplifier to increase the power of the signal for further processing, and finally recovers the desired information through demodulation.
The information produced by the receiver may be in the form of sound (an audio signal), images (a video signal) or data (a digital signal). A radio receiver may be a separate piece of electronic equipment, or an electronic circuit within another device. Devices that contain radio receivers include television sets, radar equipment, two-way radios, cell phones, wireless computer networks, GPS navigation devices, satellite dishes, radio telescopes, bluetooth enabled devices, garage door openers, and baby monitors.

FM Radio built for ECE 662 Submitted by Joel Carroll
Step-by-step instructions for making a tunable crystal radio. This is a radio that gets its power from the radio waves. I made it almost entirely from junk except for the diode (1N34 germanium diode) and the earpiece (though you can use a speaker from a phone instead.) The capacitor is made from aluminum foil and a paper towel roll. The coil is rolled on a toilet paper roll. The wire is enameled magnet wire. For the antenna I use a 15 foot wire laid out on the floor. For the earth ground I connect a wire to the ground in the household wiring. I originally got this circuit from the book "Radio Receiver Projects You Can Build" by Homer L. Davidson. For this circuit, the diode must be germanium. The following is a partial list of germanium diodes that should work: 1N34A, 1N60, 1N91, 1N119,...
Take an old AM/FM transistor radio and make a quick modification so it picks up Air Traffic Control, Air Shows and other Civil Aviation Band transmissions. Amazing!

Complete instructions for this episode of Weekend Projects can be found at http://makezine.com/projects/super-simple-fm-transmitter/ FM transmitters can be complicated to build, but not this one — it's about the easiest you can possibly make. And though the science of radio is well understood, there's a magical, emotional quality about it that we don't often stop to appreciate. Building your own radio receiver — or better yet, transmitter — makes it real again. You will not forget the first time you pick up a transmission broadcast from a device you soldered together, yourself, from a few bits of copper, carbon, plastic, and wire.

I have been asked several times to show a simple way to add an external aux input to old tube radios. So, here it is. This schematic is easy to follow. Minimal parts cost. This method can be applied to most any classic antique radio so you can enjoy your modern tunes via tube audio.
Taranis X9D Plus is a great radio with Open TX firmware / programming. I have been avoiding this radio for a long time until now. I figured, I would have to get the FrSky Taranis to keep up with the increased numbers of Mini BNF indoor Racing Quadcopters coming from China lately. And of course, I wanted to be able to get cheaper and tiny Receivers for smaller FPV racing quadcopters. So here I am, a happy owner of FrSky Taranis X9D Plus. Enjoy the video. Jim Bradt is a well respected radio cabinet restoration specialist. This presentation is part 1 of a class he conducted at the California Historical Radio Society's Radio Central in Alameda on April 11, 2015. Very little of this shoot wound up on the cutting room floor in post production since every moment of this class was key to the learning process in this unique craft of radio cabinet restoration. The video runs almost 2 hours.

The receiver crystal known under the names of crystal radio, station diode and pyrite in position is extremely simple amplitude modulation radio receiver that historically from the early twentieth century enabled the reception of radio waves of the first band radios, signals from the Eiffel tower and the first broadcasting stations. The crystal radio equipped the stations of wireless ships, stations of wireless and airships wireless stations aircraft, mobile stations. He also allowed thousands of fans to learn about electronics and played a major role in disseminating messages during World War 1 and during the Second World War.
