I got this nice little comp as a thanks for sending a Yank my original press of Bolt Thrower’s ‘In Battle There Is No Law’ LP, which had long sat unloved and unplayed in my boxes of plastic discs. I’ve definitely played this a lot more than I played that vinyl so I think I did alright out of the deal.

SDS (Societic Death Slaughter) don’t really bring anything original to the table, but they do it in a very good way. Lots of chuggy metalcrust, a few bursts of speed, some deft fret-fingering solos that verge on being over-the-top, and all bound up with appropriate guttural grunts. You’ll hear Antisect, Motörhead, Discharge and Metallica (before they got really shit) in the mix. When you’re in the right mood, that’s a nice line-up.

The two discs bring together almost all of their recorded output (as far as I can tell), remastered, and is chock-full of long out-of-print releases that would no doubt cost a small fortune even if you could track them down.

Chumbawamba Thatcher EP sleeve

The evil old hag is dead. Last night we partied in the streets. Today I had the happiest hangover ever, made even more enjoyable by the arrival of Chumbawamba’s long-anticipated anti-tribute to The Thatcher. If you didn’t pre-order it, it’s too late to get one. But don’t despair, I wouldn’t want anyone to miss out on the chance to dance to the Chumba’s final greatest hit.

On a more sombre note, MediaFire recently killed my account after allegedly receiving a couple of DMCA takedown notices, thus also killing all the links on this site. I’m not convinced about MF’s claims, as the notices involved a couple of tracks that I KNOW the copyright owners were cool with (I have a suspicion that MF are just killing any obvious music-related accounts regardless of copyright issue, expecially if they’re popular). However, the effort involved in arguing the case legally is just too much fucking hassle. So, for the moment, you’ll need to request a re-upload for any dead links while I consider my longer-term options.

And sorry for the quietness of late, but that’s just how I roll sometimes. Rest assured I’ve been having fun on a regular basis.

I’ll hold my hands up to the charge of intense slackness with sharing old tunes from my boxes of vinyl. Hopefully, this little gem will make amends.

I don’t know too much about the band, except that they played at The Joiners in Southampton sometime in the early ’90s, stayed at my house afterwards and were very pleasant chaps. This EP was a gift for giving them a floor, beans on toast and tea.

The band hailed from the Nottingham area and their singer, Si Feirn, went on to become part of twisted post-hardcore outfit Bob Tilton. This EP is more straight-up old-school style, full of that intense, tight, slightly gritty hardcore sound topped with a voice that literally screams its outrage at the injustice in the world. The band aren’t just a one-trick pony though and there are some really nice mid-paced riffs and breaks, as well as a final track that’s as much rooted in Discharge as it is Discord.

Thanks to their lovely ex-manager Del and vocalist Alex, I’ve now got my hands on Bender’s final album and permission to share it with you all. You lucky, lucky people.

Picking up where ‘Lost City Of Dalston’ finished, Jehovas Allstars is a natural progression from its predecessor. The music and words have even more punch and depth and carry a real sense of life within them. Imagine the bastard offspring of The Ex and The Astronauts raised on a diet of hiphop, English Romanticism and steroids and you’ll probably be none the wiser. Like the best ‘punk’, it’s uncategorisable.

This is another criminally unknown recording, so take full advantage of what’s on offer. Your head and feet will thank you.

If the internets died tomorrow I wouldn’t weep too many tears, for I have finally obtained my punk rock Holy Grail thanks to its myriad tentacles. The cousin of the bass player for Pro Patria Mori, the most criminally almost unheard of band in all of @-punkdom, somehow saw a post where I’d mentioned them and passed on the info to his relative. Said cousin, Paul, got in touch, we had a quick e-chat and next thing you know I’ve got my mitts on the cleanest ever rips of most of their recorded legacy (the first demo is still MIA).

The tracks on ‘Where Shadows Lie’ are nothing short of perfectly controlled fury. At a time when the metal edge was being taken on board by the @-punk crowd, PPM set a standard for others to aim for. Personally speaking, I don’t think anyone else did it quite as well. Even Antisect, for all the power hinted at in their later stuff, couldn’t quite hit the spot as sweetly or as competently as PPM did.

The ‘Lament’ track wasn’t brilliant to begin with, audio-wise – I remember Pete (guitar) having a good moan about the quality due to poor studio work. Nevertheless, once your ears adjust to it, the technical skill and lyrical strength on this track (originally intended for a comp that never happened if memory serves me right) showed a promising progression in their sound that sadly remained unfulfilled.

Paul has kindly given me permission to share these almost-unknown classics with you, and I would urge anyone passing through to grab them. Even if you’re one of the few who has/had the tapes, you’ll never have heard the tracks sounding this fucking awesome.

This is because some of the vinyl is old, not all of it was particularly well-treated in the past, and / or I didn’t have time to give it a deep clean before ripping. Nor could I be arsed with cleaning up the rips afterwards. Keeps it real though, eh?

Smog UK live at The Joiners many, many years ago

For a while, it seemed like you couldn’t avoid seeing Smog play if you were at any punky-related gig in and around Southampton in the ’90s. And that was a very good thing.

These boys knew how to knock up and belt out some mighty fine ska-tinted punk rock, reminiscent of early SLF with an ‘ampshire ‘og accent and a splash of Motorhead sauce. It’s no wonder I became mates with ’em (and still am to this day).

Life has since given the band members other commitments and Smog UK is no more. It’s a shame they only got around to putting out this EP and a split with Shutdown (which will be next up) in all their years together, as an album would’ve been far more fitting. Still, I’m happy they left any legacy at all.

Here’s a rip of both releases by D&V on Crass Records. D&V only consisted of Andy Leach on drums and Jef Antcliffe on vocals, hence the name D&V (Drums & Vocals). This download consists of The Nearest Door EP which was released in 1983 and the hugely titled album Inspiration Gave Them The Motivation To Move On Out Of Their Isolation which was released in 1985. I hadn’t heard the album in about 20 years and I was pretty surprised at how much I enjoyed it when I ripped it. The backing tracks were arranged and played by Penny Rimbaud using samples built up from vocal and percussive sources and the vocals of Eve Libertine & Joy de Vivre. Frankly it’s pretty experimental in places but considering it’s basically drums & vocals they’ve done a really good job.

The downloads are in either FLAC or 320kbps format so just grab whichever one you want. Enjoy.

Back in the day when the only sort of core that most punks were interested in was the sort left behind when turning the outside of apples into cider, Electro Hippies appeared and, along with Napalm Death, brought to the punk conciousness pretty much all of the ones we’ve grown to know and love. The elements of grind, thrash, hard and crust all found solid form in the hands of these mis-named misfits. From slow and heavy growling to whirlwind-powered shredding, they covered all bases with their blend of tight-as-fuck tunes. Lyrics were smart given their brevity, even if you did need a crib sheet to follow the bulk of them.

EH also appeared on what was once (and may still be) the world’s shortest record, making up the other half of the Napalm Death’s ‘You Suffer’ 7″ with their rendition of ‘Mega Armageddon Death Pt. 3’ which, like the flip side, also clocked in at a ripping one second. The single was free with the first copies of the original ‘Grindcrusher’ comp LP, neither of which I have on vinyl any more – the single was nicked and I swapped the album for something better last year.

Spanner In The Manor

This is a quick heads-up to let you know that my good friends Spanner are on the verge of releasing ‘Crisis’, their first full-length album, in April. It’ll be available on both CD and 12 inches of shiny vinyl and is a collaborative effort between some of my favourite DIY labels – Active Distribution, Pumpkin Records and Maloka Records, as well as my new project Iron Column Records. Spanner logoYou can listen to / download four tracks from it on their Soundcloud page right now, and the rest of the album will be going up very shortly (all under a people-friendly Creative Commons licence).

Spanner knock out in-yer-face political punky ska, more spikey than skanky but still eminently danceable. They almost exclusively play benefit gigs at grassroots / DIY venues and band members aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty at the sharp end of the struggle. And, while work and families occupy a lot of their time, they try and get out on the road as often as possible, including the odd jaunt to Europe. If they turn up somewhere near you, go and check ’em out.
