Nightline anchor Dan Harris embarks on an unexpected, hilarious, and deeply skeptical odyssey through the strange worlds of spirituality and self-help, and discovers a way to get happier that is truly achievable.
After having a nationally televised panic attack on Good Morning America, Dan Harris knew he had to make some changes. A lifelong nonbeliever, he found himself on a bizarre adventure, involving a disgraced pastor, a mysterious self-help guru, and a gaggle of brain scientists. Eventually, Harris realized that the source of his problems was the very thing he always thought was his greatest asset: the incessant, insatiable voice in his head, which had both propelled him through the ranks of a hyper-competitive business and also led him to make the profoundly stupid decisions that provoked his on-air freak-out.

Transcript -- About ten years ago in front of 5.019 million people according to the Nielsen ratings I had a panic attack on live television. I was doing a job that I'd done many times before which was filling in as the news reader on Good Morning America. The job basically entails coming on at the top of each hour and reading a series of headlines to the audience, bringing them up to date on the news of the day. And I was happy and excited to be there. I had no way to foresee what was about to happen. As soon as the anchors tossed it over to me I was in the middle of the first story and I was overtaken by this irresistible bolt of fear. My heart started racing, my palms were sweating, my mouth dried up and my lungs seized up. And I was simply unable to breathe.
You can see it and hear it on the tape. I'm gasping for air. It would have gotten a lot worse, it would have become something like the famous clip from Broadcast News where Albert Brooks breaks out in flop sweat except for I did something halfway through my newscast I'd never done before which is I quit. I gave up. I punted. I sent it back to the main hosts of the show. What I said was, "Back to you Robin and Charlie." But it was actually Diane Sawyer and Charlie who were anchoring and in my panic I was unable to remember that. And you can see that actually in an absurd little crescendo roll video of Harry Potter which was the next story I was supposed to read that the control room thought I was going to read but I was unable to do so.
And in the moments afterwards I realized that I'd had a panic attack. And I was deeply, deeply embarrassed. It wasn't until later that I learned what caused it. I went to see a doctor who is an expert in panic and he asked me a series of questions, one of which was do you do drugs. And I sheepishly said, yes, I do. And he leaned back in his chair and said, "Mystery solved." The backstory is I got myself into trouble basically because of a desire to do great at my job which is something I think a lot of people can relate to. You might call it ambition or just a drive for excellence and being in love with my job. I got to ABC News when I was 28 years old. And if you look at the pictures I look like I'm barely post pubescent. And I was working with these giants like Diane Sawyer and Peter Jennings and Charlie Gibson and Ted Koppel and I was keenly aware of how green I was, especially when compared to these famous people I had been watching on television since I was a kid.
And my way of coping with that was to become a workaholic. And I threw myself into the job and after 9/11 I volunteered and spent many years overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan and the Middle East. And when I came home from that I developed a depression and I self-medicated with recreational drugs which was a toweringly stupid move on my part. And even though I wasn't doing it when I was working and definitely not when I was on the air, I learned from my doctor in his office after my panic attack that the drugs I was taking, cocaine and ecstasy raised the level of adrenalin in your brain and basically guaranteed that I had the panic attack. So that moment in the doctor's office when he explained to me what a moron I'd been, I knew I had to make some changes in my life. And that set me off on a strange little unplanned journey that I talk about in my book, 10% Happier.
Coincidentally at around the same time my boss at the time, Peter Jennings, had assigned me to cover religion for ABC News, a job I didn't want because I had been raised in a very secular environment. My parents were both scientists. And I tried to tell him I didn't want to do it and he told me, "Shut up kid, you're gonna do it." So I ended up spending many years meeting people of faith and it really changed my view of the world and it showed me the value of having a view of the world that is larger than your own narrow self-interest.
I read a book by a self-help guru by the name of Eckhart Tolle. He has sold millions of books. I had never heard of him. A producer recommended I read the book because she thought maybe it would be a good story. So I read the book and at first I thought it was irredeemable garbage, nonsense. There's a lot of grandiose language in there and pseudoscience and over promising about how this book is gonna change your life. But then I stumbled upon this diagnosis of the human condition that I'd never heard before. Eckhart Tolle says we all have a voice in our head.

Transcript - There’s no way a fidgety and skeptical news anchor would ever have started meditating were it not for the science. The science is really compelling. It shows that meditation can boost your immune system, lower your blood pressure, help you deal with problems ranging from irritable bowel syndrome to psoriasis. And the neuroscience is where it really gets sci-fi. There was a study out of Harvard that shows that short daily doses of meditation can literally grow the gray matter in key areas of your brain having to do with self-awareness and compassion and shrink the gray matter in the area associated with stress.
There was also a study out of Yale that looked at what’s called the default mode network of the brain. It’s a connected series of brain regions that are active during most of our waking hours when we’re doing that thing that human beings do all the time which is obsessing about ourselves, thinking about the past, thinking about the future, doing anything but being focused on what’s happening right now. Meditators not only turn off the default mode network of their brain while they’re meditating but even when they’re not meditating. In other words, meditators are setting a new default mode. And what’s that default mode? They’re focused on what’s happening right now.
In sports this is called being in the zone. It’s nothing mystical. It’s not magical. You’re not floating off into cosmic ooze. You are just being where you are – big cliché in self-help circles is being in the now. You can use that term if you want but because it’s accurate. It’s slightly annoying but it’s accurate. It’s more just being focused on what you’re doing. And the benefits of that are enormous. And this is why you’re seeing these unlikely meditators now, why you’re seeing the U.S. Marines adopting it, the U.S. Army, corporate executives from the head of Ford to the founders of Twitter. Athletes from Phil Jackson to many, many Olympians. Scientists, doctors, lawyers, school children. There’s this sort of elite subculture of high achievers who are adopting this because they know it can help you be more focused on what you’re doing and it can stop you from being yanked around by the voice in your head.
My powers of prognostication are not great. I bought a lot of stock in a company that made Palm Pilot back in 2000 and that didn’t go so well for me. But having said that I’m going to make a prediction. I think we’re looking at meditation as the next big public health revolution. In the 1940s if you told people that you went running they would say, who’s chasing you. Right now if you tell people you meditate – and I have a lot of experience with telling people this, they’re going to look at you like you’re a little weird most of the time. That’s going to change. Meditation is going to join the pantheon of no brainers like exercise, brushing your teeth and taking the meds that your doctor prescribes to you. These are all things that if you don’t do you feel guilty about. And that is where I think we’re heading with meditation because the science is so strongly suggestive that meditation can do really, really great things for your brain and for your body.
The common assumption that we have, and it may be subconscious, is that our happiness really depends on external factors – how was our childhood, have we won the lottery recently, did we marry well, did we marry at all. But, in fact, meditation suggests that happiness is actually a skill, something you can train just the way you can train your body in the gym. It’s a self-generated thing. And that’s a really radical notion. It doesn’t mean that external circumstances aren’t going to impact your happiness. It doesn’t mean you’re not going to be subject to the vagaries of an impermanent, entropic universe. It just means you are going to be able to navigate this with a little bit more ease.

ABC News is the news division of the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), owned by the Disney Media Networks division of the Walt Disney Company. History
ABC began news broadcasts early in its independent existence as a radio network after the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ordered NBC to spin off the former NBC Blue Network into an independent company in 1943. The split (which NBC conducted voluntarily in the event that its appeal to have the ruling overturned was denied) was enforced to expand competition in radio broadcasting in the United States as the industry had only a few companies such as NBC and CBS that dominated the radio market, and in particular, was intended to prevent the limited competition from dominating news and political broadcasting and projecting narrow points-of-view. Sam Harris
Samuel Benjamin "Sam" Harris (born April 9, 1967) is an American author, philosopher, and neuroscientist. Harris is the co-founder and chief executive of Project Reason, a non-profit organization that promotes science and secularism, and host of the podcast: Waking Up with Sam Harris. As an author, he wrote the book The End of Faith, which was published in 2004 and appeared on The New York Times Best Seller list for 33 weeks. The book also won the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for First Nonfiction in 2005. In 2006, Harris published the book Letter to a Christian Nation as a response to criticism of The End of Faith. This work was followed by The Moral Landscape, published in 2010, in which Harris argues that science can help answer moral problems and can aid the facilitation of human well-being. He subsequently published a long-form essay Lying in 2011, the short book Free Will in 2012, Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion in 2014 and Islam and the Future of Tolerance: A Dialogue in 2015.

I was doing a job that I'd done many times before which was filling in as the news reader on Good Morning America. The job basically entails coming on at the top of each hour and reading a series of headlines to the audience, bringing them up to date on the news of the day. And I was happy and excited to be there. I had no way to foresee what was about to happen. As soon as the anchors tossed it over to me I was in the middle of the first story and I was overtaken by this irresistible bolt of fear. My heart started racing, my palms were sweating, my mouth dried up and my lungs seized up. And I was simply unable to breathe. You can see it and hear it on the tape. I'm gasping for air. It would have gotten a lot worse, it would have become something like the famous clip from Broadcast News where Albert Brooks breaks out in flop sweat except for I did something halfway through my newscast I'd never done before which is I quit. I gave up. I punted. I sent it back to the main hosts of the show. What I said was, "Back to you Robin and Charlie." But it was actually Diane Sawyer and Charlie who were anchoring and in my panic I was unable to remember that. And you can see that actually in an absurd little crescendo roll video of Harry Potter which was the next story I was supposed to read that the control room thought I was going to read but I was unable to do so. And in the moments afterwards I realized that I'd had a panic attack. And I was deeply, deeply embarrassed. It wasn't until later that I learned what caused it. I went to see a doctor who is an expert in panic and he asked me a series of questions, one of which was do you do drugs. And I sheepishly said, yes, I do. And he leaned back in his chair and said, "Mystery solved." The backstory is I got myself into trouble basically because of a desire to do great at my job which is something I think a lot of people can relate to. You might call it ambition or just a drive for excellence and being in love with my job. I got to ABC News when I was 28 years old. And if you look at the pictures I look like I'm barely post pubescent. And I was working with these giants like Diane Sawyer and Peter Jennings and Charlie Gibson and Ted Koppel and I was keenly aware of how green I was, especially when compared to these famous people I had been watching on television since I was a kid. And my way of coping with that was to become a workaholic. And I threw myself into the job and after 9/11 I volunteered and spent many years overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan and the Middle East. And when I came home from that I developed a depression and I self-medicated with recreational drugs which was a toweringly stupid move on my part. And even though I wasn't doing it when I was working and definitely not when I was on the air, I learned from my doctor in his office after my panic attack that the drugs I was taking, cocaine and ecstasy raised the level of adrenalin in your brain and basically guaranteed that I had the panic attack. So that moment in the doctor's office when he explained to me what a moron I'd been, I knew I had to make some changes in my life. And that set me off on a strange little unplanned journey that I talk about in my book, 10% Happier. Coincidentally at around the same time my boss at the time, Peter Jennings, had assigned me to cover religion for ABC News, a job I didn't want because I had been raised in a very secular environment. My parents were both scientists. And I tried to tell him I didn't want to do it and he told me, "Shut up kid, you're gonna do it." So I ended up spending many years meeting people of faith and it really changed my view of the world and it showed me the value of having a view of the world that is larger than your own narrow self-interest. I read a book by a self-help guru by the name of Eckhart Tolle. He has sold millions of books. I had never heard of him. A producer recommended I read the book because she thought maybe it would be a good story. So I read the book and at first I thought it was irredeemable garbage, nonsense. There's a lot of grandiose language in there and pseudoscience and over promising about how this book is gonna change your life. But then I stumbled upon this diagnosis of the human condition that I'd never heard before. Eckhart Tolle says we all have a voice in our head. -

Harris, an ABC News correspondent, was turned on to mediation after a live, on-air panic attack. His latest book is 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works--A True Story (http://goo.gl/wfSX4E). Subscribe by clicking here: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Transcript - There’s no way a fidgety and skeptical news anchor would ever have started meditating were it not for the science. The science is really compelling. It shows that meditation can boost your immune system, lower your blood pressure, help you deal with problems ranging from irritable bowel syndrome to psoriasis. And the neuroscience is where it really gets sci-fi. There was a study out of Harvard that shows that short daily doses of meditation can literally grow the gray matter in key areas of your brain having to do with self-awareness and compassion and shrink the gray matter in the area associated with stress. There was also a study out of Yale that looked at what’s called the default mode network of the brain. It’s a connected series of brain regions that are active during most of our waking hours when we’re doing that thing that human beings do all the time which is obsessing about ourselves, thinking about the past, thinking about the future, doing anything but being focused on what’s happening right now. Meditators not only turn off the default mode network of their brain while they’re meditating but even when they’re not meditating. In other words, meditators are setting a new default mode. And what’s that default mode? They’re focused on what’s happening right now. In sports this is called being in the zone. It’s nothing mystical. It’s not magical. You’re not floating off into cosmic ooze. You are just being where you are – big cliché in self-help circles is being in the now. You can use that term if you want but because it’s accurate. It’s slightly annoying but it’s accurate. It’s more just being focused on what you’re doing. And the benefits of that are enormous. And this is why you’re seeing these unlikely meditators now, why you’re seeing the U.S. Marines adopting it, the U.S. Army, corporate executives from the head of Ford to the founders of Twitter. Athletes from Phil Jackson to many, many Olympians. Scientists, doctors, lawyers, school children. There’s this sort of elite subculture of high achievers who are adopting this because they know it can help you be more focused on what you’re doing and it can stop you from being yanked around by the voice in your head. My powers of prognostication are not great. I bought a lot of stock in a company that made Palm Pilot back in 2000 and that didn’t go so well for me. But having said that I’m going to make a prediction. I think we’re looking at meditation as the next big public health revolution. In the 1940s if you told people that you went running they would say, who’s chasing you. Right now if you tell people you meditate – and I have a lot of experience with telling people this, they’re going to look at you like you’re a little weird most of the time. That’s going to change. Meditation is going to join the pantheon of no brainers like exercise, brushing your teeth and taking the meds that your doctor prescribes to you. These are all things that if you don’t do you feel guilty about. And that is where I think we’re heading with meditation because the science is so strongly suggestive that meditation can do really, really great things for your brain and for your body. The common assumption that we have, and it may be subconscious, is that our happiness really depends on external factors – how was our childhood, have we won the lottery recently, did we marry well, did we marry at all. But, in fact, meditation suggests that happiness is actually a skill, something you can train just the way you can train your body in the gym. It’s a self-generated thing. And that’s a really radical notion. It doesn’t mean that external circumstances aren’t going to impact your happiness. It doesn’t mean you’re not going to be subject to the vagaries of an impermanent, entropic universe. It just means you are going to be able to navigate this with a little bit more ease. After having a nationally televised panic attack on Good Morning America, Dan Harris knew he had to make some changes. A lifelong nonbeliever, he found himself on a bizarre adventure, involving a disgraced pastor, a mysterious self-help guru, and a gaggle of brain scientists. Eventually, Harris realized that the source of his problems was the very thing he always thought was his greatest asset: the incessant, insatiable voice in his head, which had both propelled him through the ranks of a hyper-competitive business and also led him to make the profoundly stupid decisions that provoked his on-air freak-out.
We all have a voice in our head. It’s what has us losing our temper unnecessarily, checking our email compulsively, eating when we’re not hungry, and fixating on the past and the future at the expense of the present. Most of us would assume we’re stuck with this voice – that there’s nothing we can do to rein it in – but Harris stumbled upon an effective way to do just that. Transcript -- About ten years ago in front of 5.019 million people according to the Nielsen ratings I had a panic attack on live television. I was doing a job that I'd done many times before which was filling in as the news reader on Good Morning America. The job basically entails coming on at the top of each hour and reading a series of headlines to the audience, bringing them up to date on the news of the day. And I was happy and excited to be there. I had no way to foresee what was about to happen. As soon as the anchors tossed it over to me I was in the middle of the first story and I was overtaken by this irresistible bolt of fear. My heart started racing, my palms were sweating, my mouth dried up and my lungs seized up. And I was simply unable to breathe.
You can see it and hear it on the tape. I'm gasping for air. It would have gotten a lot worse, it would have become something like the famous clip from Broadcast News where Albert Brooks breaks out in flop sweat except for I did something halfway through my newscast I'd never done before which is I quit. I gave up. I punted. I sent it back to the main hosts of the show. What I said was, "Back to you Robin and Charlie." But it was actually Diane Sawyer and Charlie who were anchoring and in my panic I was unable to remember that. And you can see that actually in an absurd little crescendo roll video of Harry Potter which was the next story I was supposed to read that the control room thought I was going to read but I was unable to do so.
And in the moments afterwards I realized that I'd had a panic attack. And I was deeply, deeply embarrassed. It wasn't until later that I learned what caused it. I went to see a doctor who is an expert in panic and he asked me a series of questions, one of which was do you do drugs. And I sheepishly said, yes, I do. And he leaned back in his chair and said, "Mystery solved." The backstory is I got myself into trouble basically because of a desire to do great at my job which is something I think a lot of people can relate to. You might call it ambition or just a drive for excellence and being in love with my job. I got to ABC News when I was 28 years old. And if you look at the pictures I look like I'm barely post pubescent. And I was working with these giants like Diane Sawyer and Peter Jennings and Charlie Gibson and Ted Koppel and I was keenly aware of how green I was, especially when compared to these famous people I had been watching on television since I was a kid.
And my way of coping with that was to become a workaholic. And I threw myself into the job and after 9/11 I volunteered and spent many years overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan and the Middle East. And when I came home from that I developed a depression and I self-medicated with recreational drugs which was a toweringly stupid move on my part. And even though I wasn't doing it when I was working and definitely not when I was on the air, I learned from my doctor in his office after my panic attack that the drugs I was taking, cocaine and ecstasy raised the level of adrenalin in your brain and basically guaranteed that I had the panic attack. So that moment in the doctor's office when he explained to me what a moron I'd been, I knew I had to make some changes in my life. And that set me off on a strange little unplanned journey that I talk about in my book, 10% Happier.
Coincidentally at around the same time my boss at the time, Peter Jennings, had assigned me to cover religion for ABC News, a job I didn't want because I had been raised in a very secular environment. My parents were both scientists. And I tried to tell him I didn't want to do it and he told me, "Shut up kid, you're gonna do it." So I ended up spending many years meeting people of faith and it really changed my view of the world and it showed me the value of having a view of the world that is larger than your own narrow self-interest.
I read a book by a self-help guru by the name of Eckhart Tolle. He has sold millions of books. I had never heard of him. A producer recommended I read the book because she thought maybe it would be a good story. So I read the book and at first I thought it was irredeemable garbage, nonsense. There's a lot of grandiose language in there and pseudoscience and over promising about how this book is gonna change your life. But then I stumbled upon this diagnosis of the human condition that I'd never heard before. Eckhart Tolle says we all have a voice in our head.

There was a study out of Harvard that shows that short daily doses of meditation can literally grow the gray matter in key areas of your brain having to do with self-awareness and compassion and shrink the gray matter in the area associated with stress.
There was also a study out of Yale that looked at what’s called the default mode network of the brain. It’s a connected series of brain regions that are active during most of our waking hours when we’re doing that thing that human beings do all the time which is obsessing about ourselves, thinking about the past, thinking about the future, doing anything but being focused on what’s happening right now. Meditators not only turn off the default mode network of their brain while they’re meditating but even when they’re not meditating. In other words, meditators are setting a new default mode. And what’s that default mode? They’re focused on what’s happening right now.
In sports this is called being in the zone. It’s nothing mystical. It’s not magical. You’re not floating off into cosmic ooze. You are just being where you are – big cliché in self-help circles is being in the now. You can use that term if you want but because it’s accurate. It’s slightly annoying but it’s accurate. It’s more just being focused on what you’re doing. And the benefits of that are enormous. And this is why you’re seeing these unlikely meditators now, why you’re seeing the U.S. Marines adopting it, the U.S. Army, corporate executives from the head of Ford to the founders of Twitter. Athletes from Phil Jackson to many, many Olympians. Scientists, doctors, lawyers, school children. There’s this sort of elite subculture of high achievers who are adopting this because they know it can help you be more focused on what you’re doing and it can stop you from being yanked around by the voice in your head.
My powers of prognostication are not great. I bought a lot of stock in a company that made Palm Pilot back in 2000 and that didn’t go so well for me. But having said that I’m going to make a prediction. I think we’re looking at meditation as the next big public health revolution. In the 1940s if you told people that you went running they would say, who’s chasing you. Right now if you tell people you meditate – and I have a lot of experience with telling people this, they’re going to look at you like you’re a little weird most of the time. That’s going to change. Meditation is going to join the pantheon of no brainers like exercise, brushing your teeth and taking the meds that your doctor prescribes to you. These are all things that if you don’t do you feel guilty about. And that is where I think we’re heading with meditation because the science is so strongly suggestive that meditation can do really, really great things for your brain and for your body.
The common assumption that we have, and it may be subconscious, is that our happiness really depends on external factors – how was our childhood, have we won the lottery recently, did we marry well, did we marry at all. But, in fact, meditation suggests that happiness is actually a skill, something you can train just the way you can train your body in the gym. It’s a self-generated thing. And that’s a really radical notion. It doesn’t mean that external circumstances aren’t going to impact your happiness. It doesn’t mean you’re not going to be subject to the vagaries of an impermanent, entropic universe. It just means you are going to be able to navigate this with a little bit more ease.

Transcript - There’s no way a fidgety and skeptical news anchor would ever have started meditating were it not for the science. The science is really compelling. It shows that meditation can boost your immune system, lower your blood pressure, help you deal with problems ranging from irritable bowel syndrome to psoriasis. The UK is facing an economic crisis, falling living standards, a climate crisis, the rise of the far-right. More than ever, we need a resilient Left. This means we need a strong Left media, capable of thinking honestly about the issues facing us, tackling these issues head-on, as well as reaching out to those who aren’t yet on side. Our wide range of output – from listicles to essays, from punchy videos to in-depth discussions – does exactly that.
But all this costs money: studio rent, equipment, contributor fees and digital infrastructure. We do a lot with a little, but we can’t do anything with nothing. We won’t charge for content or cash in on sponsorship deals with Pepsi. We don’t have private fortunes, or state backers, or big capital behind us – we just have you.
Not everyone can afford to give – but if you enjoy our work, and you believe in what we’re doing, maybe you could forego a couple of your preferred beverages this month and lend us a hand instead. In the longer term, growing our regular subscriber base will allow us to meet the future well-prepared – so if you can spare a few quid a month, why not sign up for a regular subscription?
