Sudan (Arabic: السودان as-Sūdān, English pronunciation (US) i/suˈdæn/, (GB) /suːˈdɑːn/), officially the Republic of the Sudan (Arabic: جمهورية السودان Jumhūrīyat as-Sūdān), is a country in north-east Africa. It is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea, Eritrea, and Ethiopia, to the east, South Sudan to the south, the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west and Libya to the northwest. It is the third largest country in Africa. The River Nile divides the country into eastern and western halves. Its predominant religion is Islam.
Sudan was home to numerous ancient civilizations, such as the Kingdom of Kush, Kerma, Nobatia, Alodia, Makuria, Meroë and others, most of which flourished along the Nile. During the pre-dynastic period Nubia and Nagadan Upper Egypt were identical, simultaneously evolved systems of pharaonic kingship by 3300 BC. By virtue of its proximity to Egypt, the Sudan participated in the wider history of the Near East inasmuch as it was Christianized by the 6th century, and Islamized in the 15th. As a result of Christianization, the Old Nubian language stands as the oldest recorded Nilo-Saharan language (earliest records dating to the 9th century). Sudan was the largest country in Africa and the Arab world until 2011, when South Sudan separated into an independent country, following an independence referendum. Sudan is now the third largest country in Africa (after Algeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo) and also the third largest country in the Arab world (after Algeria and Saudi Arabia).

JUBA At least 272 people have died in fighting between South Sudan's rival factions in the capital Juba, including 33 civilians, a government source said on Sunday, as heavy gunfire erupted again in the city and many residents sought shelter at a U.N. base. The fighting first broke out on Thursday and Friday between troops loyal to President Salva Kiir and soldiers who support vice president Riek Machar. The violence raises fears South Sudan could slide back into conflict after emerging from a two-year civil war, which began in December 2013 after Kiir sacked Machar as vice president. ►Circle us on Google + http://goo.gl/TXeBfX ►Subscribe Channel http://goo.gl/mqt0wI ►Don't forget to Like * Comment * Share this video. ----------------------------------------------------------------------...

The United Nations has warned the situation in South Sudan has actually worsened since a peace deal was signed by the president and the rebel leader last month under intense international pressure. Fighting is continuing and more than four and a half million people are now depending on food aid. The US is pushing for an arms embargo and sanctions and the next steps against the world's youngest country will be discussed on the fringes of the UN General Assembly next week. Alastair Leithead compiled this report from Unity State, where terrible atrocities have been carried out against civilians. It's been another busy year for Sudan as the country continues to find lasting peace. Prospects for peace in Sudan are still far away following a fall-out recently between South Sudan's president, Salva Kiir, and his arch-rival Riek Machar. Tens of thousands of people have been killed and more than 2 million forced from their homes since the conflict broke out in December 2013, pushing the world's youngest nation to the brink of famine. A major peace initiative is being planned in the New Year under the "National Dialogue Initiative." To bring us to speed on the situation in Sudan we are joined in SABC Pretoria studio by Sudanese Ambassador to South Africa his Excellency Omer M.A. Siddig. The economy of Sudan has been suffering since South Sudan became an independent country in 2011. The value of the currency has fallen and unemployment is rising. With the government blamed for the situation, fears of a public rising are rife. Al Jazeera's Mohammed Adow reports from Khartoum.

(14 Jan 2017) Sudan on Saturday welcomed the end of a US economic embargo on the African country, the lifting of trade and financial sanctions and the paving of the way to a strengthening of bilateral ties. On Friday, President Barack Obama signed an executive order to permanently revoke a broad range of sanctions after a six-month waiting period. On Saturday, Sudan's Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour held a news conference to make the announcement to journalists. The policy shift authorises all US-Sudan trade previously blocked by sanctions to resume immediately. It also unfreezes property and other assets that had been locked up in US banks. South Sudan has what many business people describe as a "war economy"; people there are struggling to keep their companies afloat as a result of the brutal conflict which broke out between government and rebel forces in December 2013. Even if the recent peace deal holds, it will take some time for the economy to recover. Despite the challenges of civil war there are entrepreneurs and businesses with big hopes. Musical performance by a Sudanese group at Delhi Haat, New Delhi... Sudan has a rich and unique musical culture that has been through chronic instability and repression during the modern history of Sudan. Beginning with the imposition of strict sharia law in 1989, many of the country's most prominent musicians and poets, like poets Mahjoub Sharif, were imprisoned while others, like Mohammed el Amin and Mohammed Wardi (Mohammed el amin returned to Sudan in 1991 and Mohammed Wardi returned to Sudan in 2003), fled to Cairo. Traditional music suffered too, with traditional Zār ceremonies being interrupted and drums confiscated. At the same time, however, the European militaries contributed to the development of Sudanese music by introducing new instruments and styles; military bands, especial...

Most women and girls in the rebel-held Nuba Mountains of Sudan lack access to reproductive health care, including emergency obstetric care. Their plight is one of the little known yet far-reaching effects of years of obstruction of aid to the area by the Sudanese government and armed opposition. Women and girls cannot get contraception and have little access to health care if they face complications during pregnancy and childbirth. The parties to the six-year-long conflict, the Sudanese government and the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Army-North (SPLA-North), have both obstructed impartial humanitarian aid.
Caused by the parasitic protozoa Leishmania donovani and transmitted by sandflies, Phlebotomus orientalis, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) or kala azar, is endemic over large areas in South Sudan. However, recent epidemics have caused an estimated 100,000 deaths in these regions. This project evaluated the potential of using climatic and environmental factors derived from NASA Earth observations to forecast outbreaks of VL, which will enable the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) to create an Early Warning System tool, based on similar products developed for malaria and meningitis in the IRI Data Library. Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL), also known as kala azar, is a disease caused by the parasitic protozoa called leishmania. It is transmitted by female sand flies from the Phlebotomus genus, and has initial symptoms that are similar to malaria. VL is the most serious form of leishmaniasis, and is usually fatal if left untreated. Endemic regions exist in the Indian Subcontinent and East Africa. This study focused on the Gedaref State in Eastern Sudan, which is widely affected by VL. Gedaref experiences seasonal fluctuations in incidence of leishmaniasis that typically peak from September to January. Recent epidemics have caused hundreds of thousands of deaths; resulting in a need to understand the climatic factors associated with VL and its ecological boundaries. No concerted effort, until now,...

Donors to South Sudan's health sector have challenged the country's government to channel funds to the sector instead of spending all revenue on weapons. Speaking during a health summit in South Sudan's capital Juba, British and Canadian representatives to South Sudan said the country uses a huge portion of its annual budget on the military at the expense of vital sectors such as health and education. On its part, South Sudan said it is facing financial problems but it is committed to increasing health care funding as the situation in the country improves.

About 1,500 patients are treated per week at the health center and the numbers are increasing with time. During the rainy season, malaria is the most common disease.
UNICEF correspondent Kun Li reports on the challenges South Sudan faces in providing maternal and newborn health care. For more information, please visit: http://www.unicef.org
The Waat clinic in South Sudan is overwhelmed, serving up to 70,000 people which is nearly double its intended capacity. Seasonal rains make it impossible for the sick to reach the nearest hospital, a nine-hour-walk away. For most of the patients, this clinic is their only access to healthcare services.
15 children are confirmed to have died in South Sudan as a result of health complications caused by unsterilised syringes. According to the country's health minister, Riek Gai Kok, a team of health workers who carried out a vaccination exercise on 300 children in two states was not qualified. In this regard, they repeatedly used same syringes than on more than one child, without sterilizing them. Another 32 have since recovered. The vaccination drive was carried out in May, in Eastern Equatorial. Apart from violence and famine, the world's youngest nation continues to face challenges in provision of basic services, including health care, to the citizens. (16 Dec 2016) LEAD IN: Sudan blends seaside treasures with ancient heritage, and has the potential to be a world leader in tourism. But its poor infrastructure and lack of resources has held the industry back. STORY-LINE: The scene around Sanganeb Reef is like any you would see in an exotic beach location - clear blue seas, distinctive landmarks and a yacht or two moored in the bay. With an enviable coastline, ancient monuments and desert trekking, Sudan has the potential to be a major tourist destination. But for years, poor infrastructure and a lack of qualified staff have kept the African country off the tourist map. "Sudan is going through a new phase now that requires reaching out to the world. And it is aware of that. And tourism is one of the most important means of reachi...

tourism in sudan a catalys for the future
Audio by Max & Sophie, who have travelled to South Sudan and published a travel guide about South Sudan's River Nile and Boma National Park, the best national park in Africa, with over one million Antelopes, countless number of gazelles, zebras, giraffes, crocodiles, hippos, leopards, lions, birds galore, any many more wildlife.
While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. In 2011, South Sudan gained its long-desired independence from Sudan. Two years later, an intertribal war tore the new country apart. The rift began with a spat between the country’s president, Salva Kiir, and his former vice president, Riek Machar, who are from different Sudanese tribes. The conflict quickly escalated into a full-blown civil war, with the two rivals leading opposing armies and enlisting the help of other tribes. The hostilities have led to countless civilian deaths. Thousands of people have been forced to flee, with many separated from their relatives. Without homes or access to common medicines, refugees become vulnerable to life-threatening diseases brought on by poor sanitation. The civil war has also disrupted the country’s development. When tribes are fighting over...

More than 200km (124 miles) from the Sudanese capital Khartoum, the remains of an ancient city stand in the desert. The Nubian pyramids in Meroe are smaller than the more famous ones in Egypt but there are many more of them.
Enormous caravan trains once traversed the Sahara Desert that extends for nine million square kilometres and is the largest desert in the world. Just a few kilometres beyond Sudan’s metropolis of Khartoum in Omdurman is the splendid burial place of the famous 19th century Islamic leader, Al Mahdi, one of the most important exponents of Sufism. It was also Al Mahdi who invaded Khartoum, a city founded by the Egyptians that was later ruled by the British. In the 19th century the infamous warriors of the Hadendoa people were also the courageous soldiers of Al-Mahdi´s army. Today they live in the environs of the Red Sea Mountains where the camel is the only means of transport. Those travelling across the Sahara have always had to cope with the savage climate of the desert and in ancient time...
