Cameroon (/ˌkæməˈruːn/; French: Cameroun), officially the Republic of Cameroon (French: République du Cameroun), is a country in Central Africa. It is bordered by Nigeria to the west; Chad to the northeast; the Central African Republic to the east; and Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo to the south. Cameroon's coastline lies on the Bight of Bonny, part of the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean.
Cameroon is home to more than 200 different linguistic groups. French and English are the official languages. The country is often referred to as "Africa in miniature" for its geological and cultural diversity. Natural features include beaches, deserts, mountains, rainforests, and savannas. The highest point at almost 4,100 metres (13,500 ft) is Mount Cameroon in the Southwest Region of the country, and the largest cities in population-terms are Douala on the Wouri river, its economical capital and main seaport, Yaoundé, its political capital, and Garoua. After independence, the newly united nation joined the Commonwealth of Nations, although the vast majority of its territories had previously been a German colony and, after World War I, a French mandate. The country is well known for its native styles of music, particularly makossa and bikutsi, and for its successful national football team.

Cameroon's finance minister Alamine Ousmane Mey says the country's economy is set to expand 6 percent this year even as it imposes new taxes. The central African nation last month approved the introduction of 24 taxes that apply to a wide range of goods and services, to compensate for a decline in government revenue from oil. Some of the goods included in the tax are second-hand car imports and exports of timber. Mey also said the government will boost the agriculture sector by making it easier and cheaper for farmers to buy equipment, pesticides and fertilizers. Cameroon is the world's fifth-largest cocoa grower and Africa's third-largest producer of palm oil. The IMF predicts that its economy expanded by 4.8 percent in 2016.

Since 2011, with financing from the Government, IDA – the World Bank’s Fund for the poorest countries, and others, Cameroon has been improving those outcomes with a program called Performance Based Financing (PBF). Building on that work, in 2017, with the support of the Global Financing Facility (GFF), Cameroon through close collaboration and coordination among the government, partners and civil society, will scale-up high impact interventions such as PBF to the regions identified as the priority in the national Investment Case.

Boko Haram’s terror has spread beyond Nigeria’s borders. In mid-June the recently declared Islamic State-affiliate staged two suicide attacks in the Chadian capital N’djamena, killing 23 people. The expanding threat posed by the militant group was answered earlier this year by a regional coalition of forces from Chad, Niger, and Cameroon who agreed to assist Nigeria’s own beleaguered army. Chad’s contingent of 5,000 soldiers has advanced the furthest into Nigeria. One of the most experienced fighting forces in the region, Chad says they’ve killed hundreds of Boko Haram militants while losing few of their own troops. Meanwhile, thousands of refugees and displaced people have sought shelter in Chad’s Lake Region, which houses some of most destitute communities in one of the poorest countr...

Today I travelled from Buey, Cameroon to Douala, Cameroon which is the industrial power in Cameroon. I hadn't exactly heard too many pleasant things about Douala so I really wasn't expecting much. However, I ended up really enjoying Douala, especially the food or the city. There is a massive expat community in Douala, and I think maybe I just needed a few of those comforts from home at this point in my travels after the crash, Nigeria, and malaria of late... it's been a tough couple weeks. Anyways, after ice cream and a couple meals in Douala, I decide to only spend one night, and tomorrow I'll head off to Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon. Stay tuned.
