Tripoli (Arabic: طرابلس, Ṭarābulus; Berber: Ṭrables) is the de jure capital city and the largest city of Libya. Tripoli, with its metropolitan area, has a population of about 3,200,000 million people. The city is located in the northwestern part of Libya on the edge of the desert, on a point of rocky land projecting into the Mediterranean and forming a bay.
Tripoli includes the Port of Tripoli and the country's largest commercial and manufacturing centre. It is also the site of the University of Tripoli. The vast Bab al-Azizia barracks, which includes the former family estate of Muammar Gaddafi, is also located in the city. Colonel Gaddafi largely ruled the country from his residence in this barracks.
Tripoli was founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians, who named it Oea. Due to the city's long history, there are many sites of archaeological significance in Tripoli. "Tripoli" may also refer to the shabiyah (top-level administrative division in the current Libyan system), the Tripoli District.
Tripoli was the capital of Italian Libya in the first half of the 20th entury. It was called Tripoli italiana in Italian language and the inhabitants were called Tripolini. Italian Tripoli was under Italian control from 1911 until January 1943: officially it disappeared in 1947 after the Peace Treaty following WWII.
During the Italo-Turkish War of 1911 Tripoli was conquered by the Italian Kingdom. The Italian fleet appeared off Ottoman Tripoli in the evening of September 28, 1911: the city was quickly conquered by 1,500 Italian sailors, welcomed by the population
By the 1912 treaty signed in Ouchy, Italian sovereignty was acknowledged by the Ottomans, although the local Caliph was permitted to exercise religious authority. Italy officially granted autonomy after the war, but gradually occupied the region of Tripolitania. Originally administered as part of a single colony, Tripoli and its surrounding province were a separate colony from 26 June 1927 to 3 December 1934, when all Italian possessions in North Africa were merged into one colony called "Italian Libya".
Tripoli (Arabic: طرابلس / ALA-LC: Ṭarābulus;Lebanese Arabic: Ṭrāblos;Greek: Τρίπολις / Tripolis; Turkish: Trablusşam) is the largest city in northern Lebanon and the second-largest city in the country. Situated 85 kilometers (53 miles) north of the capital Beirut, it is the capital of the North Governorate and the Tripoli District. Tripoli overlooks the eastern Mediterranean Sea, and it is the easternmost seaport in Lebanon. It holds offshore a string of four small islands, the only surviving islands of Lebanon. The largest of these islands, the Island of Palm Trees, was declared a protected reserve by UNESCO in 1992 for its rich ecosystem of trees, green sea turtles, and exotic birds.
With the history of Tripoli dating back to the 14th century BCE, it is home to the largest fortress in Lebanon (the Citadel of Raymond de Saint-Gilles), and continues to be the second largest city (behind Cairo) in Mamluk architectural heritage. In ancient times, it was the center of a Phoenician confederation which included Tyre, Sidon and Arados, hence the name Tripoli, meaning "triple city" in Greek. Later, it was controlled successively by the Assyrian Empire, Persian Empire, Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Caliphate, the Seljuk Empire, Crusader States, the Mamluks, the Ottoman Empire and France. The Crusaders established the County of Tripoli there in the 12th century.

Genres: Drama,The U. S. Marine Corps hymn starts with"From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli", and this film's story purports to be the reason why, and is give or take a few incidents in this movie: It is 1805 and the Tripoli pirates have challenged America's right to freedom of the seas---all of them, anywhere---so United Stares warships were sent to that port to bottle up their fleet and set the riff-raff right concerning who could sail where. (History begins to suffer a bit along about this point.) A U. S. Marine unit, headed by Lieutenant O'Bannon, was sent to attack them from the rear. He organized his unit around Hamet, Pasha of Tripoli, in exile after being overthrown by his brother. In Hamet's court was Sheila D'Arneau, a diploma's daughter, who disguises herself as a dancing girl,...

Following years of war and fighting between two neighbouring communities, and the increased presence of extremist groups, the government has cracked down hard. Travel video about destination Tripoli in Libya. Tripoli is the capital of the desert state of Libya. The old town is known as the Medina and with its narrow lanes and squat buildings it is a combination of Arabian, North African and Mediterranean cultures. In antiquity the city was called Oea that was one of the three cities of Tripolitania and in Roman times this section of the coast contained the trading towns of Leptis Magna and Sabratha. Is Tripoli safe enough to visit as a tourist? In my opinion, YES. Still you might want to check with locals before visiting. Not to be confused with Tripoli - the capital of Libya, Tripoli or Trablous (the arabic name of the city) is Lebanon's second largest city after Beirut and the capital of the North Governorate. The city overlooks the eastern Mediterranean Sea and there is a string of uninhabited islands just off the coast of Tripoli. These are particularly nice to visit in the summer time, I was told. I stayed at Lamunia Wellness and Spa, a small boutique hotel in Al Qalamun where quite a few hotels are located. It is just a 10 minutes drive from the Al Mina neighbourhood and downtown Tripoli. The citadel of Raymond de Saint-Gilles is located on a hilltop overlooking the city. The c...

Travel video about destination Libya. Libya is one of the most interesting desert countries and it is gradually opening its doors to the outside world. It is a veritable treasure trove of history. Ancient art and culture of various epochs as well as the fascinating exotic flair of the Orient make Libya a wonderful and fascinating holiday destination. The capital, Tripoli, awakes early in the morning as fishermen return from their nocturnal work at sea along with their catch which is fresh and tasty and ready for market. In antiquity Tripoli was called Oea and was one of the three cities of Tripolitania. Seventy kilometres west of Tripoli and also located on the Mediterranean coast are the remains of the ancient trading town of Sabratha. Its Theatre has been rebuilt and is an impressive...
Travel video about destination Tripolitania in Libya. Tripolitania: at first sight there are few traces of this ancient and legendary place in northwest Libya but it once had three great cities, Sabratha, Leptis Magna And Oea, Tripoli, once named Oea, dates back to the 7th century B.C. when Tripoli was an important trading centre for the Carthaginians. As much as anything else it is the local plants, majestic palm trees and impressive cacti that give Tripoli its Mediterranean atmosphere. Clearly, the influence of the sea is only present close to the coast as a few kilometres inland is endless desert. An eye-catching landmark that dates back to the time of the corsairs is the Citadel in Tripoli’s harbour. The Arabs enlarged the original Byzantine complex to a fortress and for a short sp...
Thank you so much to my hosts in Libya for providing me with a unique and eclectic experience during my brief stay. The Ministry of Tourism meeting was truly informative and I look forward to furthering the development of tourism in Libya back to what it was before. *This video is my own personal experience in that I had in Tripoli, Liberia and only Tripoli. I stayed with a family who's home was surrounded with a tall concrete fence and barbed wire, for safety. Two of the friends who showed me around were equipped with hand guns for my safety, which made me feel very comfortable since we were out until 9pm exploring Tripoli and it's dangerous to be out at night. I did not travel around anywhere else in Libya due to the current situation and can not speak for other places. Please take thi...

Tourism in Libya is an industry still in its infancy but one that will gradually start growing. The country is best known for its ancient Greek and Roman ruins and Sahara desert landscapes. There are five UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the country, three of which are classical ruins. The Roman cities of Sabratha and Leptis Magna in Western Libya and the Greek ruins of Cyrene in the East are big tourist attractions. One of the attractions of Libya's archeological sites, is that they are not as heavily populated by tourists as are other ancient sites in North Africa and southern Europe. It's always a time well spent when it's in Tripoli. Start your day with some delicious Fatteh and Foul the traditional way. Head to El Mina, the biggest fishing port in Lebanon and take a "Flouka" ride to the islands. Enjoy the beautiful scenery, clear blue water and soft sand. Get your food, and make sure you have enough Beirut Beer to keep everyone Fresh! SUBSCRIBE: http://www.youtube.com/c/VicStefanu - Let's go visit the Citadel (Castle) of Raymond de Saint Gilles which is among the most impressive in the Middle East, rivaling those in Aleppo and Amman, for sheer size and preservation, but also for its exciting location, rising above a multitude of densely-populated Tripoli (in Lebanon) neighborhoods and sporting views of the sea and the mountains to the east. Named after one of the first major Crusaders in the region, the original battlements were built during the 12th century. It was burned in a devastating attack by the Mamluks in 1289, but was renovated and expanded in 1308 by the Crusader governor of what was at that time the County of Tripoli, and much of what remains today was built during this time. It was again renovated and e...
Travel video about destination Leptis Magna in Libya. Northern Libya was once where the dramatic history Leptis Magna was created, an ancient metropolis that was the first and thus the oldest Phoenician settlement that formed part of what was later known as Tripolitania. The remains of this city are typically Roman. The second century A.D. brought new prosperity when Septimius Severus, who was born in Leptis Magna, became emperor of the Imperium Romanum. At that time monumental buildings were constructed whose beauty and size was only surpassed by those in Rome itself. The ruins of the very large Severian Basilica highlight the amazing architectural skills of the master builders of those days. The Forum was also built at the time of Septimius Severus and today it is the most imposing area i...
