A hydraulic press is a device (see machine press) using a hydraulic cylinder to generate a compressive force. It uses the hydraulic equivalent of a mechanical lever, and was also known as a Bramah press after the inventor, Joseph Bramah, of England. He invented and was issued a patent on this press in 1795. As Bramah (who is also known for his development of the flush toilet) installed toilets, he studied the existing literature on the motion of fluids and put this knowledge into the development of the press.
The hydraulic press depends on Pascal's principle: the pressure throughout a closed system is constant. One part of the system is a piston acting as a pump, with a modest mechanical force acting on a small cross-sectional area; the other part is a piston with a larger area which generates a correspondingly large mechanical force. Only small-diameter tubing (which more easily resists pressure) is needed if the pump is separated from the press cylinder.
Pascal's law: Pressure on a confined fluid is transmitted undiminished and acts with equal force on equal areas and at 90 degrees to the container wall.
Graphite /ˈɡræfaɪt/, archaically referred to as Plumbago, is a crystalline form of carbon, a semimetal, a native element mineral, and one of the allotropes of carbon. Graphite is the most stable form of carbon under standard conditions. Therefore, it is used in thermochemistry as the standard state for defining the heat of formation of carbon compounds. Graphite may be considered the highest grade of coal, just above anthracite and alternatively called meta-anthracite, although it is not normally used as fuel because it is difficult to ignite.
There are three principal types of natural graphite, each occurring in different types of ore deposit:
Press may refer to:
Crushed is the past participle form of "to crush".

In this video I make real diamond from graphite. First I attempt to make real diamond by crushing carbon with a hydraulic press because I have had many requests to do so. But, even though there are many hydraulic press videos that pretend to make diamond in a hydraulic press, it is quite impossible without extreme heat! So, I show you a way to make real diamond in your microwave by heating up graphite soaked in oil. I end up making a small explosion in the microwave. Luckily I didn't burn my house down! In the end I show you a small diamond that we I made with the extreme heat! This is a video of how to make a graphite crucible using a rather unique compression and extrusion process I invented. I am sorry it took so long but sometimes what looks easy on paper can turn out difficult. I welcome everyone to contribute in both technique and clay formulas to this project. I will try to answer any questions since I had more video footage than would fit into this 15 min video. Crucible formulas are "Proprietary" among the various manufacturers making finding a formula difficult. bob

Today I took an old pencil and connected it to my 15V DC power supply. As the temperature rises, the graphite mine begins to glow and the pencil to smoke heavily. Finally, the wood cracked and started to burn, exposing the pure graphite lead. After burning the wood from the pencil, I broke the pencil lead in two small pieces and connected them again to my power source. When holding the graphite pieces together, they quickly started to glow and the carbon from the graphite started reacting with the oxygen from the air, creating CO2. The CO2 gas is getting so hot from the electrodes that it escapes as plasma from the tiny gap between the graphite pieces. This plasma arc is so bright that you can't look at it with bare eyes. The heat is so strong, the alligator clips began to melt. A funny b...
As part of our Artist How-To Series on Graphite, Artist Sarah Becktel Brings you her tips on selecting the right pencils for your drawings. Sarah discusses various types of graphite pencils including wood-cased pencils in different core and barrel sizes. Some artists use smaller core pencils for line and details, and thicker core pencils for shading large areas. Other artists prefer mechanical pencils which don't require sharpening and also let the artist adjust the size of the led. Some artists also like to use woodless pencils that are made entirely of graphite and have a lacquer coating on the outside to keep your hands clean. These pencils give the artist tons of graphite to work with. Special led sharpeners and sandpaper work nicely to create sharper points or rounder tips wit...

Graphite Ultimate Evolution Form, attack and Final Battle
Using a microwave to expand graphite produces partially-exfoliated graphene "worms" that are useful in the production of graphene and for making supercapacitor batteries. This method involves microwaving acid-treated graphite to produce expanded graphite. Acid-treated graphite can be made by soaking approximately 10 grams of ~35 mesh flake graphite in 150 mL concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4, 98%) together with 50 mL 70% Phosphoric acid (70%) overnight. The acid molecules are small enough to squeeze in between and intercalate the layers of graphene that make up the graphite flakes. The graphite is then placed in a acid-resistant filter paper (PE/PTFE) and washed with copious amounts of deionized (DI) or distilled water several times to remove any excess acid until the pH reaches 7 and is d...

In the gleaming nightfall we can watch the light retreat.
Its rays slither eastward, like snakes along the grass,
As it leaves us to ourselves.
Woods of tall trees
Old, deformed and barren - obscuring the sun -

And brief dim flickers of light shining through them.
These are rays from a god that is long dead.
