George is at the centre of the Cape Garden Route (it is situated exactly 400km from both Cape Town and Port Elizabeth) and started out as an outpost of the timber industry but with improved communications the town experienced unprecedented growth. Tourists can now explore the Country Hop Route for hops and flower farms and where they can learn cheese and candle making. Save your legs and take a Power Van trip up the mountains to enjoy a picturesque picnic.
The Outeniqua Transport Museum houses steam locomotives and carriages, dating back to the glorious age of steam and despite the very modern sawmills, furniture is still made by hand. Charles Sayers single handedly created the George Museum where it started as a single room Mini Museum but had grown to a large museum visited by thousands.
The red George lily is unique to the Southern Cape and figures prominently on the George municipal logo.
Goerge produced international pop singers, tennis players, actors, cricketers, a geologist and botanist and of course the famous Ernie Els.
