Southern Germany (German: Süddeutschland) as a region has no exact boundary, but is generally taken to include the areas where Upper German dialects are spoken. This corresponds roughly to the historical stem duchies of Bavaria and Swabia, or in a modern context to the states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg within the Federal Republic of Germany (to the exclusion of the areas of the modern states of Austria and Switzerland). Sometimes also included are the Saarland and the southern parts of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate often are included as well, corresponding to historical Franconia.
Southern Germany primarily contrasts with Northern Germany. The term mostly corresponds to those territories of modern Germany which did not form part of the North German Confederation in the nineteenth century.
Between Northern and Southern Germany is the loosely defined area known as Central Germany (Mitteldeutschland), roughly corresponding to the areal of Central German dialects (Franconia, Thuringia, Saxony).

Germany (/ˈdʒɜːrməni/; German: Deutschland [ˈdɔʏtʃlant]), officially the Federal Republic of Germany (German: Bundesrepublik Deutschland, listen ), is a federal parliamentary republic in West-Central Europe. It includes 16 constituent states and covers an area of 357,021 square kilometres (137,847 sq mi) with a largely temperate seasonal climate. Its capital and largest city is Berlin. With about 81.5 million inhabitants, Germany is the most populous member state in the European Union. After the United States, it is the second most popular migration destination in the world.
Various Germanic tribes have occupied northern Germany since classical antiquity. A region named Germania was documented before 100 AD. During the Migration Period the Germanic tribes expanded southward. Beginning in the 10th century, German territories formed a central part of the Holy Roman Empire. During the 16th century, northern German regions became the centre of the Protestant Reformation.
Country of origin (COO), is the country of manufacture, production, or growth where an article or product comes from. There are differing rules of origin under various national laws and international treaties.
The effects of country of origin labeling on consumer purchasing have been extensively studied The country of origin effect is also known as the "made-in image" and the "nationality bias."
Research shows that consumers' broad general perceptions of a country, including of its national characteristics, economic and political background, history, traditions, and representative products, combine to create an overall image or stereotype that is then attached to the products of that country. This image has a significant influence on consumer perceptions and behaviours, and in situations in which additional information is unavailable or difficult to get can be the sole determinant of whether or not someone buys a product. Its effect is strongest on consumers who don't know much about the product or product type, and weakest on consumers who are well-informed. Sensitivity to country of origin varies by product category. It is strongest for durable goods and luxury goods and weakest for "low involvement" product categories such as shampoo and candy. In various studies it has also been proven that the Country-of-Origin Effect also applies to services.
Made in Germany is a merchandise mark indicating that a product has been manufactured in Germany.
The label was originally introduced in Britain by the Merchandise Marks Act 1887, to mark foreign produce more obviously, as foreign manufactures had been falsely marking inferior goods with the marks of renowned British manufacturing companies and importing them into the United Kingdom. Most of these were found to be originating from Germany, whose government had introduced a protectionist policy to legally prohibit the import of goods in order to build up domestic industry (Merchandise Marks Act - Oxford University Press).
According to Professor Asaf Zussman, Department of Economics, Hebrew University in "The Rise of German Protectionism in the 1870s: A Macroeconomic Perspective∗", the "Rye and Iron" tariffs introduced by Bismarck’s Germany in 1879, caused a major reduction of imports in order to protect Germany's industries. As a response, the Free-trade Liberal government in the UK introduced the Merchandise Marks act to allow consumers to be able to choose whether or not they would continue to purchase goods from protectionist economies.
The Black Forest (German: Schwarzwald, pronounced [ˈʃvaʁt͡svalt]) is a large forested mountain range in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. It is bounded by the Rhine valley to the west and south. Its highest peak is the Feldberg with an elevation of 1,493 metres (4,898 ft). The region is almost rectangular in shape with a length of 160 km (99 mi) and breadth of up to 60 km (37 mi).
The Black Forest stretches from the High Rhine in the south to the Kraichgau in the north. In the west it is bounded by the Upper Rhine Plain (which, from a natural region perspective, also includes the low chain of foothills); in the east it transitions to the Gäu, Baar and hill country west of the Klettgau. The Black Forest is the highest part of the South German Scarplands and much of it is densely wooded. It is composed of rocks of the crystalline basement and Bunter Sandstone and its natural boundary with the surrounding landscapes is formed by the emergence of muschelkalk, which is absent from the Black Forest bedrock. Thanks to the fertility of the soil which is dependent on the underlying rock, this line is both a vegetation boundary as well as the border between the Altsiedelland ("old settlement land") and the Black Forest, which was not permanently settled until the High Middle Ages. From north to south the Black Forest extends for over 150 kilometres, attaining a width of up to 50 kilometres in the south, and up to 30 kilometres in the north.Tectonically the range forms a lifted fault block, which rises prominently in the west from the Upper Rhine Plain, whilst seen from the east it has the appearance of a heavily forested plateau.

Vineyards, castles and palaces - that's what many tourists associate with southern Germany. But the region around Heilbronn-Franken offers more than just idyllic scenery. It's also home to 80 top companies - all global leaders in their sectors. But there are problems too. The companies can't find enough apprentices and are facing a shortage of skilled, specialized workers. For more from Made in Germany go to http://www.dw.de/program/made-in-germany/s-3066-9798

In the late fifties of last century, I went by train from Hohenpeissenberg to Weilheim and travelled via Augsburg and Donauwörth to Dillingen at the Danube river, where my parents booked me in a boarding school of the Order of Saint Benedict to get secondary education and finally become a missionary for the OSB. Early summer 1959 the monks organized a bus trip along the Romantic Road, a major tourist attraction of Southern Germany. I was quite impressed by the medieval legacy of my homeland and enjoyed the sunny day.

In Munich, where locals specialize in good living, we visit boisterous markets and go-for-Baroque palaces, while office workers surf in the Isar River. Heading into the foothills of the Alps, we tour the fairy-tale castles of "Mad" King Ludwig, and climb to the highest point in Germany atop the Zugspitze. Then we cross into Tirol to conquer a desolate ruined castle. © 2002 Rick Steves' Europe

Travel video about the Romantic Road in Germany. Thousands of years of history is experienced by those who travel Germany’s Romantic Road with its world famous historic cities, fortresses and palaces, from Würzburg to Neuschwanstein Castle. The picturesque Baroque town of Würzburg is located on the River Main amid the Franconian wine region and is dominated by the mighty Marienberg Fortress. The Celts created a fortress that subsequent rulers gradually extended and the oldest church in Franconia, including a massive watchtower, continues to be protected by several huge walls. Tauberbischofsheim is one of the oldest cities in the popular Tauber Valley that was once completely walled. Missionary bishop, Boniface, founded Germany’s first women's monastery in Germany in 735 A.D. and installe...
In 1868, Bavarian King Ludwig The Second had a dream come true in Allgäu, southern Germany: Castle Neuschwanstein, the realisation of his amazing world of fantasy situated close to Castle Hoch-Schwangau where as a child the king had immersed himself in German mythology. The fairytale castle was seventeen years in construction and in every way the idyll of ancient German knighthood, a union of both castle and its surroundings. The dining room is full of paintings that depict scenes from Wartburg at the time of the legendary Singer War. The centre of the room is dominated by a massive table top made of gilded bronze, Siegfried and his fight with the dragon, good against evil. The Throne Hall is a most magnificent and impressive room, two storeys high with lateral rows of columns and a gild...

Cruising the Rhine River, we dodge riverboat traffic and the legendary Lorelei. After climbing castles and descending into dungeons, we relax with Rhine wine. We tour Burg Eltz — a lived-in castle where the noble lady still puts out fresh flowers. Then we enter the walled town of Rothenburg for Germany's best wood carving, a vivid dose of medieval punishment, and a tour with the night watchman of the town's lamp-lit ramparts. © 2002 Rick Steves' Europe

On 1 July 2002, Bashkirian Airlines Flight 2937, a Tupolev Tu-154 passenger jet with 69 people on board and DHL Flight 611, a Boeing 757 cargo jet with a crew of two, collided over the towns of Überlingen and Owingen, in southern Germany. All 71 people on board both aircraft were killed.[5] The official investigation by the German BFU identified as the main cause of the collision a number of shortcomings on the part of the Swiss air traffic control service in charge of the sector involved, and also ambiguities in the procedures regarding the use of TCAS, the on-board aircraft collision avoidance system.[BFU 2] Less than two years after the crash, on 24 February 2004, Peter Nielsen, the air traffic controller on duty at the time of the collision, was murdered in an apparent act of revenge...
