Raub District

Raub (Jawi: ﺭﺍﻭﺏ; Chinese: 劳勿) is a town, a district and also a parliamentary constituency in Pahang, Malaysia. The town is situated 110 km from the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur and 265 km from Pahang's capital, Kuantan. Raub is one of the oldest towns in Pahang.

Raub district consists of 7 mukim (sub-districts), namely Batu Talam, Sega, Semantan Ulu, Dong, Ulu Dong, Gali and Tras. With an area of 2,271 km², Raub district is situated in west of Pahang and between two range, Titiwangsa Range and Benom Mountain Range. Raub experiences a temperature range between 20 and 30 °C annually and an average rainfall about 200 mm, and is home to Fraser's Hill.

History

Raub was explored and founded in the 18th century. It is a historic gold mining settlement, and the gold mining industry is now undergoing something of a resurgence as the gold price has risen. According to the history, this mining centre was named Raub after a group of miners found a handful of gold in every tray of sand they dig. This is described by J.A. Richardson in his book, The Geology and Mineral Resources of the Neighbourhood of Raub Pahang. According to him (page 36), "People found that for every "dulang" of sand there was a handful (raub) of gold". The old folks' tale recounts that in the early 19th century, an old man and his two sons discovered gold every time they scooped up the earth in Raub. Thus, the town and the district derived their name from the Malay word raub which means "scoop".

勞勿出產的貓山王如此盛名，除了園主們的細心照料，也因為一個先天條件，那就是跟這裡的地勢有關。彭亨高山多，在高山斜坡種植榴槤樹，下雨天雨水落地，很快就會順著斜坡流走，不像平地果園，會有雨水和泥土貯足榴槤樹根，導致根部過于潮濕。高山種植的貓山王，榴槤外殼帶灰白色，平地種植貓山王則是青色。但是批發商願意給灰殼貓山王高價勝于青殼貓山王……從價格來看，灰殼貓山王有它略勝一籌的優點。勞勿在90年代開始種榴槤之時，80都是種植D24。直到陈来福（福哥）從吉蘭丹話望生（Gua Musang）帶回貓山王“树眼”回雙溪吉流自己“驳回”，在這裡種植，貓山王就逐漸取代D24。直到2005年貓山王逐漸出名，大家才知道這個品種，而勞勿也開始以種植貓山王為主。榴槤樹的壽命大概是五十年到一百年。榴槤樹一年結兩三次果實，樹齡十年的果樹一次可以收成約一百粒果實或更多，樹齡越大結的果實越多。 The two villages Sungai Klau and Sungai Ruan located in Raub, Pahang are not only the homes to one thousand five families but also over two thousand plots of durian orchards. This impressive feat not only made Raub famous for durian plantation but also the place that supplies the highly sought-after “Musang King” durians. One of the reasons why Raub produces such fine quality of “Musang King” is because of its terrain. There are many mountainous slopes in Pahang which is suitable for durian plantation. When it rains, the water drains away quickly and the water retention is lesser unlike the flatlands which may cause root damage to the fruit trees. “Musang King” durians harvested from the highlands has a brown-greyish exterior. Those harvested from the flatlands comes with a yellow-greenish shell. Fruits from the highlands fetch higher prices compared to the latter. Back in the 90s, D24 durians was the most common type that was being planted. Tan Lai Fook (Fook Gor) chanced upon a delicious, local type of durian from Gua Musang, Kelantan and brought back its buds for grafting purpose. The fruit tasted so good that in 2005, “Musang King” durians became famous and became the specialty of Raub’s durian orchards. The lifespan of a durian tree is between fifty to a hundred years. About a hundred to two hundred fruits can be harvested at one time from a healthy tree. Usually durian trees have three fruiting seasons in a year. The older the tree, the more fruits can be harvested.

Es war ein Riesencoup auf der Berliner Museumsinsel: Diebe stahlen im März eine Goldmünze aus dem Bode-Museum. Die Münze war nicht nur millionenschwer, sie wog auch 100 Kilo. Jetzt hat die Polizei Verdächtige festgenommen. Dreieinhalb Monate nach dem spektakulären Diebstahl einer 100-Kilo-Goldmünze aus dem Berliner Bode-Museum hat die Polizei zwei Verdächtige festgenommen. Es gebe deutliche Anhaltspunkte, dass die beiden Festgenommenen identisch mit zwei Personen auf den Videoaufnahmen aus den Überwachungskameras seien, sagte ein Polizeisprecher. Ein Spezialeinsatzkommando war am Mittwochmorgen ausgerückt und durchsuchte mehrere Wohnungen im Stadtteil Neukölln. Außerdem wurde ein Auto sichergestellt. Zum Verbleib der Münze konnte die Polizei zunächst keine Angaben machen. Diebe hatten im März eine zwei Zentner schwere kanadische Goldmünze mit dem Bild von Königin Elizabeth II. aus dem Museum gestohlen. Allein das Material - reinstes Gold - ist geschätzt etwa 3,7 Millionen Euro wert. Wegen der Schwere der Münze ging die Polizei von mehreren Tätern aus. Die Polizei veröffentliche Anfang Juli Bilder aus Überwachungskameras, um den Tätern auf die Spur zu kommen. Das Video zeigte drei schwarz gekleidete Personen, die ihre Gesichter unter Kapuzen, hinter Kragen und ihren Händen verbergen. Am Mittwochmorgen war die Polizei noch in den Wohnungen der Verdächtigen im Einsatz. Die beiden Verdächtigen wurden jeweils in den Neuköllner Straßen Mittelweg und Thomasstraße festgenommen. Neben Neukölln war die Polizei am Morgen auch noch an deren Orten in der Stadt im Einsatz. Nähere Angaben wollte sie dazu nicht machen. Das gestohlene Goldstück namens «Big Maple Leaf», 2007 in nur fünf Exemplaren von der Königlichen Kanadischen Münze geprägt, war die Leihgabe eines Privatmanns an das Bode-Museum. Die Polizei ging damals davon aus, dass die Diebe die Münze einschmelzen und in kleineren Portionen zu Geld machen wollen. Im Bode-Museum, das zum Weltkulturerbe Museumsinsel gehört, waren nach dem Diebstahl die Sicherheitsvorkehrungen verstärkt worden. Die Täter waren am frühen Morgen über die direkt an dem Museum vorbeiführende S-Bahntrasse in das Gebäude eingestiegen. Eine Leiter und eine Schubkarre ließen sie in der Nähe stehen.
