Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur (/ˈkwɑːləˈlʊmpʊər/ or /-pər/; Malaysian pronunciation: [ˈkwalə ˈlumpʊr]) is the national capital and most populous global city in Malaysia. The city covers an area of 243 km² (94 sq mi) and has an estimated population of 1.6 million as of 2010.Greater Kuala Lumpur, covering similar area as the Klang Valley, is an urban agglomeration of 7.5 million people as of 2012. It is among the fastest growing metropolitan regions in South-East Asia, in terms of population and economy.

Kuala Lumpur is the seat of the Parliament of Malaysia. The city was once home to the executive and judicial branches of the federal government, but they were moved to Putrajaya in early 1999. Some sections of the judiciary still remain in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. The official residence of the Malaysian King, the Istana Negara, is also situated in Kuala Lumpur. Rated as an alpha world city, Kuala Lumpur is the cultural, financial and economic centre of Malaysia due to its position as the capital as well as being a key city. Kuala Lumpur is defined within the borders of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and is one of three Malaysian Federal Territories. It is an enclave within the state of Selangor, on the central west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Since the 1990s, the city has played host to many international sporting, political and cultural events including the 1998 Commonwealth Games and the Formula One Grand Prix. In addition, Kuala Lumpur is home to the tallest twin buildings in the world, the Petronas Twin Towers, which have become an iconic symbol of Malaysia's futuristic development.

Kuala

Kuala is a town and subdistrict of Langkat Regency. It borders Selesai to the north, Salapian to the west, and Sei Bingai to the south and east. Most people in Kuala are Javanese people, with a significant Karo population. Although most Karo are Christian, many are also Muslim, and as the Javanese are nearly 100% Muslim, Kuala subdistrict is 80% Muslim.

Kuala town itself had a population of 12,459, making it by far the largest settlement in the district. Kuala town is on the main road between Binjai and Bukit Lawang.

Agriculture

Agriculture in Kuala subdistrict is relatively homogenous, with 6,425 hectares of oil palm, 4,243 hectares of sawah (wet rice), 880 hectares of maize and 3,466 hectares of natural rubber, with little land devoted to other crops. There are five factories in the subdistrict.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) (IATA: KUL, ICAO: WMKK) is Malaysia's main international airport and one of the major airports in South East Asia. Built at a cost of US$3.5 billion in Sepang district of Selangor, it is located approximately 45 kilometres (28 mi) from Kuala Lumpur city centre and serves the Greater Klang Valley conurbation.

KLIA is the largest and busiest airport in Malaysia. In 2014, it handled 48,930,409 passengers and 753,899 tonnes of cargo. It is the world's 20th-busiest airport by total passenger traffic, 13th-busiest airport by international passenger traffic, and 28th-busiest airport by cargo traffic.

The airport is operated by Malaysia Airports (MAHB) Sepang Sdn Bhd and is the major hub of Malaysia Airlines, MASkargo, AirAsia, AirAsia X, Malindo Air and Rayani Air.

History

Background

The ground breaking ceremony for Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) took place on 1 June 1993 when the government decided that the existing Kuala Lumpur airport, then known as Subang International Airport (now Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport) could not handle future demand. It was created as part of the Multimedia Super Corridor, a grand development plan for Malaysia.

Petronas Towers

The Petronas Towers, also known as the Petronas Twin Towers (Malay: Menara Petronas, or Menara Berkembar Petronas), are twin skyscrapers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. According to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH)'s official definition and ranking, they were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004 and remain the tallest twin towers in the world. The buildings are a landmark of Kuala Lumpur, along with nearby Kuala Lumpur Tower.

History

The towers were designed by Argentine architect César Pelli. They chose a distinctive postmodern style to create a 21st-century icon for Kuala Lumpur. Planning on the Petronas Towers started on 1 January 1992 and included rigorous tests and simulations of wind and structural loads on the design. Seven years of construction followed at the former site of the original Selangor Turf Club, beginning on 1 March 1993 with excavation, which involved moving 500 truckloads of earth every night to dig down 30 metres (98 ft) below the surface.

It's the largest and probably the most important and influential city in Malaysia and truly has some amazing sites to offer. Along with modern skyrise towers like the Petronas Towers, there are still lots of traditional historic buildings as well. The awesome mixture of cultures, the mix of traditional and modern, and very importantly, the outstanding cuisine is what makes Kuala Lumpur such a great city to explore! 1. On this list of top things to do in Kuala Lumpur I first stop by the most famous landmark of the the city: the Petronas Towers. These twin giant sky scrapers are huge, and they literally reach towards the heavens and touch the clouds. On the bottom of the Petronas Towers is a pretty fancy shopping mall while the tops of the towers are filled with offices. On the 41st and 42nd floor, there is a sky bridge which connects the two towers together and which is open for visitors. Years ago, it used to be free entrance but unfortunately now they have started to charge a rather steep 80 Malaysian Ringgits per person. 2. After the visiting the Petronas towers, number two on the list is the historical district of old Kuala Lumpur. Visiting and walking around the area is one of the top things to do in Kuala Lumpur and you shouldn't miss the opportunity. From Merdeka Square to the old railroad station, you'll see some amazing architecture and buildings. Another must visit is the National Mosque, which is known as Masjid Negara. With a capacity of 15,000, this is the central and most visited mosque in the city. 3. The Menara KL Tower, along with the Petronas Towers, is one of the dominating features of Kuala Lumpur's skyline. At 421 meters in height, it's one of the world's tallest communications towers. I was lucky enough to be invited to the annual BASE jumping event which was held at the KL Tower so I had a pass to go to the top for the incredible view and to see the event (http://migrationology.com/2012/10/jordan-kilgore-base-jump-kuala-lumpur/). The KL Tower also offer look out viewpoints and a number of restaurants where you can dine with an incredible view. 4. Number 4 is Little India which is better known as Brickfields. Kuala Lumpur is home to many Indian's many from the south of the country. Brickfields is a popular place to browse, shop for all sorts of Indian products and most importantly to eat at some seriously delicious Indian restaurants. If you're looking for good Indian food in Kuala Lumpur, check out this restaurant: http://migrationology.com/2012/11/south-indian-food-kuala-lumpur-vishalatchi/ 5. Chinatown, located on Petaling Street, is one of the biggest Kuala Lumpur attractions. It's mostly known for it street shopping and restaurants. You can find all sorts of fake brand names and nearly everything imaginable. 6. Thean Hou Temple is one of the most impressive Daoist temples in Kuala Lumpur. It's free to visit and offers insights into the Hainanese community in the city and there are also great views of the city. 7. Central Market, is a top tourist shopping attraction in Kuala Lumpur. Though many of the products are rather touristy, there are some good things waiting to be found. 8. Within central Kuala Lumpur are the KL Lake Gardens and Bird Park. It makes a great tropical escape to the bustling city life. 9. The Batu Caves, located just outside the central part of the city is one of the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur. The caves and shrines are one of the most sacred Hindu sites outside of India. 10. Chow Kit Market is the central fresh wet market in the city. Everyday thousands of shoppers get their Malaysian food ingredients at this interesting market. 11. Malaysian food is the ultimate attraction to visiting Kuala Lumpur. With a great mixture of local Malay, Chinese, and Indian, there's no shortage of incredible dining that will leave you satisfied and hungry for more! The Malaysia travel vlog continues with a wander through Kuala Lumpur and some photography at Petronas Towers. Any Malaysia travel guide is going to include some exploration of the city of Kuala Lumpur. And, the truth is, the city they call KL is really the only place on our Malaysia itinerary. We really want to see as much of the city as possible in the 2 days we have here. I also want to grab a couple images of some of the sights in Kuala Lumpur, even though I'm supposed to be on a bit of a vacation rather than shooting photography. For @alajode's Kuala Lumpur blog she really wanted to check out the 3 nations that are involved in Malaysian life. So, we started in Chinatown, then went to Little Italy, and then ended in the center of town near the Petronas Towers. We had so much Malaysian food, too, it was crazy. I'm not sure how we managed to walk so much. We went to a great brunch place called VCR, then had lunch in Brickfields, and finished with street food. We also made use of the infinity pool at our Kuala Lumpur hotel. Kuala Lumpur at night is an amazing place. And, I wanted to capture the lights and beauty of the Petronas Towers at night. So, that was our last stop. I struggled a bit with the photography at the towers. They are just so massive, and the area around them is pretty busy. But, I do think I managed to get a couple cool photos anyways. Tomorrow, the Malaysia travel vlog is over and I'm headed onward to my next destination. Stay tuned!

A multicultural display of extremely delicious specialty food is available for eating. Within Malaysian street food, there is Malay Street food, Chinese Street Food, and Indian street food all available to try and the options are endless. Kuala Lumpur street food is some of the best in the world. Street food around the world is different everywhere, but what is so special about Malaysia is how multicultural everything is and how unique the cooking and food culture is. So for my 3rd trip to Malaysia, we came for a Kuala Lumpur food tour. Chuchu and I decided to travel to Malaysia on a 4 day eating vacation to eat as much street food and local specialties as we could. One thing that we both fell in love with about Malaysian cuisine, is that you could really spend a lifetime eating here tasting the local varieties of Chinese food, Indian Food, and Malay Food. With our limited amount of time on this trip, we ate non stop to sample all of the Kuala Lumpur food available. That being said, in 4 days, we barely scratched the surface of Malaysian food, there is so much more! Arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia (how to arrive) and riding the KLIA Ekspres train to the city center KL Central. We have just arrived on a Thai Airways flight from Bangkok at Kuala Lumpur International Airport KUL Malaysia´s main international airport. This video shows you the viewer (the traveler) a real time view of what it is like to arrive at Kuala Lumpur Airport. The video begins with us (Maxi and Maro) disembarking our flight and walking through the passenger bridge from the aircraft into the Kuala Lumpur Airport Terminal. Once in the terminal we have to find the correct direction to walk so that we can pass Immigration, visit the Baggage Collection Area and pass through customs. We quickly find the arrivals direction we must walk through the airport and on the way we pass some Duty Free Shops and Restaurants before we arrive in the main terminal departure area. From the Terminal Departure Area we find the driver less Kuala Lumpur Airport Shuttle which drives us from the Satellite Terminal to the main Airport Terminal. Kuala Lumpur Airport calls this train shuttle service between terminals the Aerotrain and it takes approximately 2 minutes to drive between the two terminals. Once we arrive in the Main Airport Hall we quickly pass through Immigration after which we make our way to the Airport Baggage Collection Area. Once we have collected our luggage we pass though the Airport Customs area and find ourselves in the Arrivals area where we head over tp one of the currency exchange counters to exchange money before buying our tickets for the KLIA Ekspres (The train between the airport and the city). The KLIA express drives between Kuala Lumpur International and KL Station (the main train station where you can make connections to other trains). Coming up with this video is indeed more pressuring compared to the other travel videos. This is because I've lived my whole life in KL before moving to Germany. I felt like it was my duty to represent my city well and I hope I did! Kuala Lumpur is a great place for a holiday.
