Whether you've lived in the Midwest your whole life or you're making your very first visit to the nation's heartland, there is something for everyone to love in St. Louis - and SLU's Midtown location puts you steps away from it all! St. Louis Landmarks The famous Gateway Arch is a national monument that welcomes you to downtown St. Louis. The Arch stands at 630 feet tall and you can take a tram up to the top to see the whole city. St. Louis definitely loves its sports and has the best fans in the nation. It has three professional sports teams, Blues hockey, Rams football and Cardinals baseball. When it's game day, team colors and team spirit fill the streets. The Citygarden is one of St. Louis' newest urban parks. Its interactive art displays and water features draw hundreds of thousands of visitors. An Urban Center Downtown St. Louis's Washington Avenue was once filled with fashion warehouses, but now is one of the city's main entertainment areas. You can find fine dining, live music and the famous City Museum, a wonderland of caves and slides for all ages. SLU is located in the heart of Midtown, a cultural center filled with restaurants, a grocery store, a movie theater, a bowling alley, all within walking distance. Midtown has a number of award winning art galleries, including the Contemporary Art Museum, The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts and SLU's own museums - the Museum of Contemporary Religious Art and the Saint Louis University Museum of Art. Even More Arts The Fabulous Fox Theatre hosts traveling musicals, such as "The Lion King" and "Billy Elliot." Musicians like Eddie Vedder and Death Cab for Cutie have also performed there. Powell Hall is home to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, the second oldest orchestra in the nation. It often pairs up with popular artists, such as Ben Folds and performs scores from films like Lord of the Rings. Even better for SLU students, the Symphony offers student discounts. It features unique rooms with the latest amenities. Fun Around Campus Forest Park is another SLU student favorite. It's larger than New York City's Central Park and it's where students jog, bike, golf and picnic. The park is home to some of St. Louis' best activities, more of which are free. Visit the Science Center, The Muny outdoor theater, the Art Museum and the zoo, home to over 19,000 animals, including puffins, elephants and giraffes. Saint Louis's Delmar Loop is another vibrant area, full of eclectic entertainment and dining options. Named one of the 10 great streets in America, Delmar Boulevard has a lot going on. The Loop is filled with every kind of restaurant that you could think of, from Thai to Mexican to Middle Eastern to classic American. There's even a restaurant that only sells mac-n-cheese. Shopping and More There's lots of shopping options, including comic shops, indie record stores, fashionable boutiques and art galleries. And after the sun goes down, there's plenty to do. The Tivoli Theater shows wide release and indie films. Eat at Blueberry Hill, a favorite burger joint, where rock legend Chuck Berry performs each month or visit the Pageant, an award-winning music venue that brings nationally known bands to town nearly every night.
