Angola /æŋˈɡoʊlə/, officially the Republic of Angola (Portuguese: República de Angola pronounced: [ɐ̃ˈɡɔlɐ]; Kikongo, Kimbundu and Umbundu: Repubilika ya Ngola), is a country in Southern Africa. It is the seventh-largest country in Africa, and is bordered by Namibia to the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Zambia to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to west. The exclave province of Cabinda has borders with the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The capital and largest city is Luanda.
Although its territory has been inhabited since the Paleolithic Era, modern Angola originates in Portuguese colonization, which began with, and was for centuries limited to, coastal settlements and trading posts established from the 16th century onwards. In the 19th century, European settlers slowly and hesitantly began to establish themselves in the interior. As a Portuguese colony, Angola did not encompass its present borders until the early 20th century, following resistance by groups such as the Cuamato, the Kwanyama and the Mbunda. Independence was achieved in 1975 after a protracted liberation war. That same year, Angola descended into an intense civil war that lasted until 2002. It has since become a relatively stable unitary presidential republic.
Press Conference was a public-affairs television series aired in the United States in the mid-1950s.
Press Conference was similar in format and content to the long-running Meet the Press and was moderated by one of that program's creators, pioneering female journalist Martha Rountree. On the program, a current newsmaker, generally but not always a politician, was questioned by a panel of newspersons in a typical press conference format. As usually done in a traditional press conference, the subject was allowed to make an opening statement (although not all chose to do so) prior to fielding questions.
Press Conference was launched on NBC in July 1956, but that fall moved to ABC. Initially shown in prime time, the program drew only a minimal, public-affairs oriented audience running against two high-profile Sunday night variety series, The Ed Sullivan Show on CBS and The Steve Allen Show on NBC; however, its appearance helped ABC to meet the public-interest requirements imposed on U.S broadcasters by the Federal Communications Commission. Press Conference was moved to Sunday afternoon for three months in early 1957, prior to returning to prime time in April of that year under a new title, Martha Rountree's Press Conference. The program ended in July 1957.

Angola is quickly emerging as a new political and economic power on the African continent after nearly 30 years of civil war came to a close in 2002. China’s Kilumba Kiaxi project, with an investment of 3.5 billion US dollars to build houses on a land of 56 square kilometers, is the largest social housing program under construction in Angola. Angolan officials have hailed the project as a new boost to national economy. Angola's growing investment and influence in Portugal is causing alarm as the former colony - buoyed by petrodollars and a lucrative diamond industry - has eyed the media as one of the key areas of investment. President Jose Eduardo dos Santos has been the leader of Angola for more than three decades and in that time he has reigned in the country's media. To get uncensored coverage about the country, many Angolans turn to news outlets in Portugal, their former colonial ruler. However, Angolan oil wealth has been filtering back into Portugal and is buying up news outlets in the country. The "reverse colonisation" as it is being called is affecting the way that Angola is covered by the Portuguese media. The Listening Post's Gouri Sharma reports on Angola's news media at home and abroad.

Angola's post-war economy is booming and its capital, Luanda, is the most expensive city in the world after Tokyo. Although the country is Africa's second-biggest oil producer, most Angolans live on less than $2 a day. Meanwhile, the country's president and his ruling party have clung on to power for over three decades, gaining tight control of both the public and private sectors, and stifling dissent and protest.
Lower oil prices are hurting Angola, which has halved its 2016 economic growth forecast and slashed government spending. Oil accounts for more than 90 percent of Angola’s exports, so the price crash is having an effect on the quality of people's lives. You will find out about the challenges facing a country seeking to diversify its economy: Angola wants to shake off its dependence on petrol, which for a long time has been key to its success. And that means developing its infrastructure. the Laúca dam In Laúca, on the river Kwanza, workers are busy building the biggest dam currently under construction in Africa. It will begin operating shortly, an event that has been eagerly anticipated. That’s enough to supply a city of 8 million inhabitants. Laúca will double en...
In August Angola will hold its election. It is expected to be a defining moment for the country and the continent as millions vote for a new President to replace Eduardo dos Santos who has been head of the Southern African state since 1979. On this episode of the MoneyMakers, Bruce Whitfield is joined by Rafael Savimbi, son of the late Angolan rebel leader Jonas Savimbi, senior figure in Unita and a candidate that competed in the country's first post-civil war elections in 2008.

More than 4 million people live in Luanda. Luanda is a cosmopolitan city, many people fled to the capital during the brutal civil war that destroyed much of the country from 1974-2002. It's located on the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by natural beauty that is somewhat marred by the sprawling townships ( bairros ) and poor living conditions of its inhabitants. Luanda was founded in 1575 by Portuguese colonists and became a major slaving port. Since then, it has always been the cultural heart of Angola. It's a vibrant place with obvious Portuguese influences, exce...
The tourism industry in Angola is based on the country's natural beauty, including its rivers, waterfalls and scenic coastline.[1] Angola's tourism industry is relatively new, as much of the country was destroyed during the post-colonial civil war which ended in 2002. Unlike most countries in the region, which generally give US, EU, and many other citizens a visa on arrival or require no visa at all, Angola has complicated and onerous Soviet-style visa requirements (official letter of invitation, documents concerning purpose of travel, copy of travel itinerary, proof of funds, etc., all of which are sent back to Luanda for approval). This antiquated attitude to tourism places the country at a disadvantage in a competitive market for international tourism. More info: https://en.wikipedia.o...

Angola Travel Video - Angola is an eye-opener -- in more ways than one. Scarred painfully by years of debilitating warfare and untouched by foreign visitors since the early 1970s, the country remains remote and undiscovered, with few observers privy to the geographic highlights and vast cultural riches that lie hidden behind an ostensibly violent veneer. But, with the recent cessation of a 40-year civil conflict ushering in a prolonged period of peace and stability, opportunities for exploration are quietly opening up. For outsiders the attractions are manifold. Despite widespread poverty, inbred corruption and an infrastructure devastated by decades of indiscriminate fighting, Angola holds a lure that few other countries can match. Here in the heady heat of equatorial Africa youll encount...

Cycling 2800 KM in Angola in February and March 2014, the most positive surprise among my whole Trans-African journey. This video features the 12-hour chata trip around the Congo river mouth between Cabinda and Soyo, the sand road until N'zeto, the new roads in the mountains of Quibaxe and Golungo Alto, the non-existent roads and dugout canoe passages in the Landos around Kixinge and Longanhia, the mountain roads around Uku-Seles, Lubango, its carnival, Christo-rei and Tundavala, the Serra-da-Leba road, the last rains of the rainy season in the Cunene province around Otchinjau, and some big caterpillars. What the video doesn't say is that with Dave (at 16:15), we needed 2-3 hours to clean the sticky mud from the 50-meter stretch between our tents and the gravel road. Nor does it say that ...

Four out of Angola's five opposition parties have requested a recount of ballots after the August 23rd election alleging widespread irregularities in the process. According to the elections body, the ruling MPLA party – the country's only ruling party post-independence, won the polls by over 60%. But the opposition coalition insists the process was tainted and that a recount was necessary failure to which they will resort to the courts. Angola is running short of foreign reserves to pay for imports because its national oil firm has not contributed to state coffers since January. The firm halted payments after the price of oil fell. Oil output represents 40 percent of Angola's gross domestic product and more than 95 percent of foreign exchange revenue. Angola has implemented a number of currency controls, including cutting the amount of hard currency travellers are allowed to take abroad. This is in an attempt to cope with a foreign currency shortage that has led to a flourishing black market. Remittances from Sonangol, which is run by the president's daughter Isabel, represent 60 percent of total government revenues. The appointment of the president's daughter as the company's head however remains contentious in the count...

Angola /ænˈɡoʊlə/, officially the Republic of Angola (Portuguese: República de Angola pronounced: [ʁɛˈpublikɐ dɨ ɐ̃ˈɡɔlɐ]; Kikongo, Kimbundu, Umbundu: Repubilika ya Ngola), is a country in Southern Africa bordered by Namibia on the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the north, and Zambia on the east; its west coast is on the Atlantic Ocean and Luanda is its capital city. The exclave province of Cabinda has borders with the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Portuguese were present in some -- mostly coastal -- points of the territory of what is now Angola, from the 16th to the 19th century, interacting in diverse ways with the peoples who lived there. In the 19th century, they slowly and hesitantly began to establish themselves in the interior. A...
WATER, ENGINEERING, PEOPLE & PROGRESS - INFRASTRUCTURE CHANGING LIVES. World-renowned civil engineering and construction company, Mota-Engil, has returned to a key project it was forced to abandon in the 1970’s due to the Angolan civil war. In the process it is not only rebuilding a hugely important and strategic infrastructure point, but also changing lives for good. In the early 1970’s the company began construction of the Calueque Dam on the Cunene River in Angola’s southern Cunene Province. Civil war forced them and many residents to abandon the area as Angola’s MPLA and Namibia’s SWAPO forces battled the South African army aligned to Jonas Savimbi’s UNITA Movement. A complex and protracted war also involving Cuba, Russia and the CIA lasted decades, leaving thousands dead, the area ...
Alex Honnold is the most accomplished free climber in the world. Angola is a southwest African country that recently emerged from 27 years of bloody civil war. What brings together these strange bedfellows you ask? Some of the most epic unclimbed rocks in the world, and a community needing help to diffuse the hidden land mines leftover from the conflict. (Plus a shadowy local hotel magnate, but we'll get into that later). This is Alex Honnold in Angola, for one of the most unique adventures of his storied climbing career this far. Liz Garbus and Jonathan Stack co-directed this documentary, which explores life behind the bars of Louisiana's notorious maximum-security prison, Angola. Stationed on an old slave plantation, Angola is populated overwhelmingly by black inmates, and staffed by a white administration. The stories of various inmates convey the injustice and futility but also the hope that is part of prison life. A prisoner puts forth exonerating evidence to the parole board, and another speaks prior to execution.
