Artificial island

An artificial island or man-made island is an island that has been constructed by people rather than formed by natural means. They are created by expanding existing islets, construction on existing reefs, or amalgamating several natural islets into a bigger island.

Early artificial islands included floating structures in still waters, or wooden or megalithic structures erected in shallow waters (e.g., crannógs and Nan Madol discussed below). In modern times artificial islands are usually formed by land reclamation, but some are formed by the incidental isolation of an existing piece of land during canal construction (e.g. Donauinsel and Dithmarschen), or flooding of valleys resulting in the tops of former knolls getting isolated by water (e.g. Barro Colorado Island). The largest artificial island, René-Levasseur Island, was formed by flooding of two adjacent reservoirs.

Some recent developments have been made more in the manner of oil platforms (e.g., Sealand and Republic of Rose Island).

South China

South China (simplified Chinese: 华南; traditional Chinese: 華南; pinyin: huá nán) is a geographical and cultural region that covers the southernmost part of China. Its precise meaning varies with context.

Definitions

In the broadest sense, Southern China can denote the entire portion of the country south of the line demarcated by the Qin Mountains and Huai River. Between 1945 and 1949, the Republic of China defined Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Fujian and Taiwan as the "Seven Provinces of South China" (simplified Chinese: 华南七省; traditional Chinese: 華南七省; pinyin: huá nán qī shěng). The term can also be used to denote the Lingnan region; but today, the phrase is generally used to refer only to Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hong Kong and Macau (historically also known as Liangguang). Defined as such, South China is also contained within South Central China.

Administrative divisions

Island

An island /ˈaɪlənd/ or isle /ˈaɪl/ is any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water. Very small islands such as emergent land features on atolls can be called islets, skerries, cays or keys. An island in a river or a lake island may be called an eyot or ait, or a holm. A grouping of geographically or geologically related islands is called an archipelago, e.g. the Philippines.

An island may be described as such despite the presence of an artificial land bridge, for example Singapore and its causeway, or the various Dutch delta islands, such as IJsselmonde. Some places may even retain "island" in their names for historical reasons after being connected to a larger landmass by a wide land bridge, such as Coney Island or Coronado Island. Conversely, when a piece of land is separated from the mainland by a man-made canal, for example the Peloponnese by the Corinth Canal, it is generally not considered an island.

There are two main types of islands: continental islands and oceanic islands. There are also artificial islands.

South China Sea

The South China Sea is a marginal sea that is part of the Pacific Ocean, encompassing an area from the Singapore and Malacca Straits to the Strait of Taiwan of around 3,500,000 square kilometres (1,400,000 sq mi). The area's importance largely results from one-third of the world's shipping sailing through its waters and that it is believed to hold huge oil and gas reserves beneath its seabed.

It is located

south of mainland China, including the island of Taiwan, in the east;

east of Vietnam and Cambodia;

west of the Philippines;

east of the Malay peninsula and Sumatra, up to the Strait of Malacca in the west and

north of the Bangka–Belitung Islands and Borneo

The minute South China Sea Islands, collectively an archipelago, number in the hundreds. The sea and its mostly uninhabited islands are subject to competing claims of sovereignty by several countries. These claims are also reflected in the variety of names used for the islands and the sea.

They caused some controversy when they began constructing many islands and then militarizing them and turning them into airbase fortresses of the China Sea, which we’ll get into more later. But this one here is supposed to be for touristic purposes. Construction began in April 2016 and consists of a round, crescent shaped body, and somewhat seems like a response to Dubai’s artificial islands. 4. Islands of Uros The Uros people of Peru live very simple lives on floating artificial islands. These islands are actually made of reeds that grow on the edges of Lake Titicaca. These reeds are harvested, bundled tightly and small settlements are built on top of them.The Uros are very mysterious people and legend has it that they have black blood and have seemingly magical tolerance to cold weather. The purpose of the island settlements were originally for defensive purposes and if they came into threats from invading tribes they could simply move their homes on this islands. Each island houses anywhere from 2-10 families depending on the size. Local residents enjoy a variety of different resources that Lake titicaca provides which include, a large variety of fish, birds such as flamingos and even graze cattle on their islands. Simply fascinating. 3. Palm Jumeirah How would you feel about living on an extremely large man made island in the Persian Gulf? Sounds like it could be intriguing. These also belong to the flamboyant United Arab Emirates. But instead of taking the shape of the world, these cluster of islands are shaped like a palm tree and are much utilized than it’s neighboring chain of islands. The palm tree consists of a trunk that acts like a bridge to the mainland with 16 fronds and a surrounding crescent shaped island. This is the home the to luxurious Palm Atlantis Hotel which began construction in 2001. This adds an extra 40 miles to Dubai’s coastline and was built with over 7 million tons of stone. They kept the nearby ecosystem in mind and used natural rock to encourage natural reef creation by the sea life. 2. Thilafushi Maldives The Maldives are known for being an excellent resort country in the middle of the indian ocean. Its beautiful beaches are flocked to by millions of tourists each year. One of its least popular islands, however, isn’t really natural. The thilafushi island is built on top of reclaimed coral reefs in 1992 not to house a 5 star resort, but to house the garbage left by tourists and locals alike. It was built as a landfill and given the nickname garbage island. In 2005, it’s estimated that 31000 truckloads of garbage were transported to this island each year and it continues to grow each year at the rate of 365,000 square feet a day! The BBC even described the waste on the island was apocalyptic. 1.Chinese War Islands In recent years, it’s been China’s goal to beef up their military presence especially in the South China Sea where these islands are located. Their building islands here on international waters at an exponential rate at there seems to be no end in sight. The US navy and rival Asian counterparts dispute these practices as being aggressive and unnecessary. This is part of their plan to build dominance as a commercial and military power and no one wants to tell them to stop. This guarantees that tension in this area will continue to rise especially as Vietnam, Australia and the Philippines don’t appreciate this one bit. Just because it’s called the China Sea, doesn’t make it theirs! It’s a crucial trade route with more than 5 trillion dollars worth of international shipping each year, in which China has no historical ties with. If something isn’t done about these islands soon, it could very well lead to world war 3.

This artificial archipelago located off the coastline of United Arab Emirates in Persian Gulf. Dubai islands project was commissioned by Sheikh Mohammed in an effort to maximize beachfront property. Dubai's palm tree-shaped resort island on land built from the sea will contribute 120 km of beaches. Aside from the construction of the ambitious expansion, there is also the problem of constructing a mini city, which consists of 4,500 high-end residential homes, miles of roads, luxurious hotels and many amenities that will require basic human resources including electricity, safe drinking water and many more. This enormous project will position Dubai as one of the top tourist destinations in the world. I will tell you why these islands have appeared and that they must satisfy. Dubai is an emirate that open sea about 50 km (an estimate) and the sites required for building projects are on the beach. Major commercial and residential infrastructures will be constructed by Nakheel Properties, a property developer in The UAE. The Belgian and Dutch dredging and marine contractors, Jan De Nul and Van Oord, some of the world's specialists in land reclamation, were hired to complete construction. A floating artificial island built in Mexico by British artist Richart "Rishi" Sowa. He's first Island was destroyed by a hurricane in 2005; a replacement, Joyxee Island, has been open for tours since 2008. In the waters of Isla Mujeres, the "Island of Women", near Cancun. It opened for tours in August, 2008. The new island was initially 20 metres (66 ft) in diameter, which has since expanded to 25 metres (82 ft), and plants and mangroves are already growing on it. It contains about 100,000 bottles. The new island has three beaches, a house, two ponds, a solar-powered waterfall and river, a wave-powered washing machine and solar panels. Volunteers helped with the project. Sowa will continue to make improvements to the Island, so it will always be a work of art in progress. A South American community is tackling the problem of rubbish and plastic bottles in a novel way. It's using plastic and polystyrene waste to help create a series of artificial floating islands on Lake Titicaca, which is thousands of metres above sea level. However some are questioning whether using plastic is the most sustainable way of creating floating islands. Nestled in the Bolivian highlands, the stunning beauty of Lake Titicaca attracts thousands of visitors every year. The lake is the largest in South America and straddles Bolivia and Peru at 3,800 metres (12,493 feet) elevation. It's an 8,400 square kilometre (3,240 square mile) oasis, about an hour's drive from the Bolivian capital, La Paz. A popular tourist must-see are the floating islands near the town of Copacabana, built by indigenous communities, to increase visitor numbers and boost their income. Originally the islands were made from totora reeds, a traditional aquatic plant that grows in the lakes and rivers of the Bolivian High plateau. But in recent years, locals decided to ease the problem of pollution by recycling plastic bottles into flotation devices for new islands - reducing the need to collect totora reeds. One of the builders, Felix Antonio Tarija explains. "In the biggest one there are 30,000 (plastic bottles), in the one over there 20,000, and in the small one 10,000. Here we always recycle plastic bottles." "We do care about the environment. You can see, we don't throw bottles, because we recycle to build cylinders and repair the island," he adds. Villagers collect plastic bottles from the lake or from landfill and place them in flexible mesh cylinders. The bottles must have their caps on, to keep the water out; then these cylinders are tied by ropes and they form a floating firm foundation. These islands must be close to the shore because, according to the builders, this material is not stable in deeper areas. Water levels on Titicaca Lake vary, depending on the time of the year. This is why the islands should "move" when there is low tide, to avoid colliding with the bottom, and damaging the artificial structure. Visitors seem to approve of how the locals are recycling waste material. "That's ok, because in other places, I see bottles everywhere. People should collect them to make more islands" says visitor Maria Gauchalla. Another vistor, Willy Martinez says " I think is really interesting. Mostly because we are helping the environment. Plastic bottles are affecting the entire world. I think is a very important community initiative" However not everyone agrees that this is the best environmental solution, as Alfredo Mamani Salinas, Executive Chairman of the Authority of Titicaca Lake explains. "Plastic bottles are waterproof, when an organic matter touches the synthetic material, it requires oxygen to live; and when it doesn't have oxygen it dies and it will rot, turning in an anoxic (low oxygen) matter, generating odours. That's one of the dangers of plastic bottles. In the other hand with "totora" that risk doesn't exist." Some island builders are now moving away from using plastic bottles in favour of polystyrene for the base of their constructions. They say it is more stable in deep water and can support more weight than plastic bottles. Polystyrene blocks are bound with ropes and mesh, then fitted to wood, forming an island. Simon Kantuta, is one of the first builders of artificial islands in Copacabana: "Because of the climate changes, water is drying, we could not longer provide tourism services. That's why we started working with a new style of floating islands built with polystyrene. In this kind of structure now we can float and navigate. China is Building Massive Artificial Islands - South China Sea
The South China Sea is a marginal sea that is part of the Pacific Ocean, encompassing an area from the Karimata and Malacca Straits to the Strait of Taiwan of around 3,500,000 square kilometres (1,400,000 sq mi). The area's importance largely results from one-third of the world's shipping sailing through its waters and that it is believed to hold huge oil and gas reserves beneath its seabed.China has been rapidly piling sand onto reefs in the South China Sea, creating seven new islets in the region. It is straining geopolitical tensions that were already taut. The speed and scale of China’s island-building spree have alarmed other countries with interests in the region. China announced in June that the creation of islands — moving sediment from the seafloor to a reef — would soon be completed. Since then, China has focused its efforts on construction. So far it has constructed port facilities, military buildings and an airstrip on the islands, with recent imagery showing evidence of two more airstrips under construction. The installations bolster China’s foothold in the Spratly Islands, a disputed scattering of reefs and islands in the South China Sea more than 500 miles from the Chinese mainland.
