365 Days of Resilience Inside Syria - UNDP SYRIA ANNUAL REPORT 2016
As the crisis in Syria continues in its seventh year, the humanitarian community estimates that 13.5 million people in Syria are in need for various kinds of humanitarian assistance. Four out of five Syrians live in poverty and 64.7 per cent of the population live in extreme poverty.
A deep economic recession, heavily weakened national currency, sanctions, soaring food and fuel prices, and disrupted markets have contributed to extreme vulnerability of Syrians across the country. 6.5 million people are internally displaced due to the conflict. The pace of displacement remains relentless.
365 Days of Resilience Inside Syria: UNDP Achievements in 2015
In its fifth year, the Syrian crisis continues to cause more destruction to infrastructure and massive damage to every aspect of life. Syrians are being exposed daily to violence and are increasingly deprived of basic services.
In 2015, UNDP responded by helping affected communities to rehabilitate of infrastructure and restore basic services. We 2015 provided 44,000 emergency employment jobs to both IDPs and host community members to remove solid waste and debris, and to repair infrastructure.
365 days of Resilience in Syria
As a response to the emerging needs of the Syrian population, and in line with the 2014 Syrian Humanitarian Assistance Response Plan (SHARP), UNDP focuses on building the resilience of the affected population in Syria to stabilize their livelihoods and strengthen their capacities to cope with the shocks and negative impacts of the crisis. UNDP’s recovery, resilience and livelihoods programme was conceived, designed and is implemented as an integral component of SHARP 2014 as it is agreed upon between the government of the Syrian Arab Republic and the United Nations in Syria. Projects are implemented with various actors including local authorities, non-governmental organization (NGOs), and community and faith-based organizations (FBOs) active in communities all over Syria.
What we do
UNDP Syria, in partnership with other UN and humanitarian agencies, will continue to scale up its early recovery interventions to reach areas where people are most affected and in need of help. The crisis has exacerbated pre-existing levels of poverty and unemployment. To address this, UNDP has put in place a two-year country programme (2016-17) that is fully oriented toward mitigating internal and external displacement through strengthening the resilience of the most affected populations inside the country.
