    Perfect example of the limits of the political gamesmanship the Games aspires to, particularly when it clashes with the real-world reality & brutality of these leaders. The Olympics are shiniest when they embrace those worthy of our praise (see: ).

    During Sochi, NBC ran a profile of Putin calling him a "man of peace" & saying Russia was "ready to join the world." Putin invaded Ukraine two weeks later.

    ... and then we have the US leading with an administration that has reduced the EPA by 1500 ppl, removed all references to climate change from the EPA's strategic plan & pulled out of Paris. it's a sorry state of affairs all round.

    A sign of things to come. When climate change causes unfavorable living conditions that lead to unrest among populations & forces others to flee for better climes, environmentalists become the new guard of truth-tellers & change makers that come under authoritarian scrutiny

    Awful news. She was an incredible human rights advocate. I always followed her work from afar but more recently her work came into a closer orbit once she took up the position of Special Rapporteur on human rights in . May she RIP.

    We're saddened by the death of UN Special Rapporteur . She was a legendary defender: pioneering, determined, calm, courageous -- and a lovely human being.

    Canada's govt should've sought extradition of Ayatollah Shahroudi last month to answer for killing of Zahra Kazemi, an Iranian-Canadian who died on Shahroudi's watch in 2003. But they didn't. They must make a better decision here by demanding an investigation.

    The death of Iranian-Canadian academic and environmentalist Kavous Seyed-Emami marks the THIRD DEATH of a detainee in in the last 40 days . Officials claim they were all suicides. Iran must allow an independent UN-led investigation.

    Sometimes there's good reason to be wary of "solidarity" w/ women's rights that take a reductionist view of the agency of those they claim to be championing (arguably, FEMEN). This is not one of those times. on what global solidarity with women means right now.
