Elizabeth Catlett died a couple days ago [April 2, 2O12]. She was an amazing artist who knew when to be tender, and when to kick ass. I'm kind of sad that it is so difficult to find large amounts of her work online. So here's to you, Ms. Catlett.

Acclaimed printer maker and sculptor Elizabeth Catlett was born on April 15, 1915 in Washington, D.C. Growing up with grandparents who had been slaves, she was very aware of the injustices against black women. She attended Lucretia Mott Elementary School, Dunbar High School and then Howard University School of Art where she graduated cum laude in 1936. She was denied admittance to the Carnegie Institute because she was African American. After she became the first student to earn an MFA degree in sculpture from the University of Iowa in 1940, she studied ceramics at the Art Institute of Chicago, and later in New York, she studied lithography at the Art Students League. She also spent 1943 studying with sculptor Ossip Zadkine in New York.
Catlett next became the promotion director of the George Washington Carver School in Harlem, where she taught with Ernie Chrichlow and Charles White. In 1946, Catlett accepted an invitation to work in Mexico City's Taller de Grafica Popular, a collective graphic arts and mural workshop. There she cultivated the theme for her work, the African American woman. In 1947, she produced her first major show "I am a Negro Woman," a series of sculptures, prints, and paintings through a Julius Rosenwald Foundation Fellowship, which toured black women's colleges in the South. That same year, she married Mexican painter Francisco Mora. A lively community of artists surrounded her and Mora, including Rivera and his wife, Frida Kahlo. From 1958 through 1976, she directed the sculpture department at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.
In 1993, Catlett received her first New York City exhibition since 1971, and in 1998, the Neuberger Museum of Art in Purchase, New York honored her with a fifty year retrospective. Her paintings and sculptures are in the collections of New York City's Metropolitan Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the New Orleans Museum of Art. Her works often focus on mother and child themes, as well as sculptures of famous African Americans.

Catlett, Virginia
Catlett is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fauquier County, Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2010 Census was 296. It is located west of the Prince William County line. Catlett was a former rail stop on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad. The area was the site of many raids on the rail road during the American Civil War. Today, it is a small community.
The Catlett Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, and Auburn Battlefield in 2011.
Catlett contains H. M. Pearson Elementary School.

Elizabeth Catlett
Elizabeth Catlett (b. April 15, 1915. –d. April 2, 2012) was an African-American graphic artist and sculptor best known for her depictions of the African-American experience in the 20th century, which often had the female experience as their focus. She was born and raised in Washington, D.C. to parents working in education, and was the grandchild of freed slaves. It was difficult for a black woman in this time to pursue a career as a working artist, and Catlett devoted much of her career to teaching. However, a fellowship awarded to her in 1946 allowed her to travel to Mexico City, where she would work with the Taller de Gráfica Popular for twenty years and head the sculpture department of the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas. In the 1950s, her main means of artistic expression shifted from print to sculpture, though she would never give up the former.
Her work is a mixture of abstract and figurative in the Modernist tradition, with influence from African and Mexican art traditions. According to the artist, the main purpose of her work is to convey social messages rather than pure aesthetics. While not very well known to the general public, her work is heavily studied by art students looking to depict race, gender and class issues. During her lifetime, Catlett received many awards and recognitions including membership in the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana, the Art Institute of Chicago Legends and Legacy Award, honorary doctorates from Pace University and Carnegie Mellon and the International Sculpture Center’s Lifetime Achievement Award in contemporary sculpture.

Elizabeth Catlett died a couple days ago [April 2, 2O12]. She was an amazing artist who knew when to be tender, and when to kick ass. I'm kind of sad that it is so difficult to find large amounts of her work online. So here's to you, Ms. Catlett.

Acclaimed printer maker and sculptor Elizabeth Catlett was born on April 15, 1915 in Washington, D.C. Growing up with grandparents who had been slaves, she was very aware of the injustices against black women. She attended Lucretia Mott Elementary School, Dunbar High School and then Howard University School of Art where she graduated cum laude in 1936. She was denied admittance to the Carnegie Institute because she was African American. After she became the first student to earn an MFA degree in sculpture from the University of Iowa in 1940, she studied ceramics at the Art Institute of Chicago, and later in New York, she studied lithography at the Art Students League. She also spent 1943 studying with sculptor Ossip Zadkine in New York.
Catlett next became the promotion director of the George Washington Carver School in Harlem, where she taught with Ernie Chrichlow and Charles White. In 1946, Catlett accepted an invitation to work in Mexico City's Taller de Grafica Popular, a collective graphic arts and mural workshop. There she cultivated the theme for her work, the African American woman. In 1947, she produced her first major show "I am a Negro Woman," a series of sculptures, prints, and paintings through a Julius Rosenwald Foundation Fellowship, which toured black women's colleges in the South. That same year, she married Mexican painter Francisco Mora. A lively community of artists surrounded her and Mora, including Rivera and his wife, Frida Kahlo. From 1958 through 1976, she directed the sculpture department at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.
In 1993, Catlett received her first New York City exhibition since 1971, and in 1998, the Neuberger Museum of Art in Purchase, New York honored her with a fifty year retrospective. Her paintings and sculptures are in the collections of New York City's Metropolitan Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the New Orleans Museum of Art. Her works often focus on mother and child themes, as well as sculptures of famous African Americans.

VA Senator Jill Vogel
I commend VA State Senator Jill Vogel for exploring her spiritual existence. I met her at the Wat Lau Buddhavong in Catlett VA in June of 2012 while she was visiting the Royalty that had come in from Thailand. I think that it was a wonderful expression to show that there are some members of the Government that embrace a more spiritual existence over a Religious one. I believe that she should continue her experience by visiting an original Temple in Thailand so that she can get a feeling for the difference between living the Lifestyle and the Religious version of Buddhism that has been reformed by Christianity in the USA. True Meditation is done in silent meditation and now with a Prayer. It requires extreme focus and effort on the behalf of the meditator and will have a lasting effect...

Now that I am a practiced meditator I include loud sounds to distract me and help me to learn how to focus better and to keep my focus. I teach this method to those that wish to learn, but I am being blocked by Occult members that pretend to be interested and lead the real public that I am trying to reach to the mistake that I have friends that support me when in fact there are maybe 2 people that are actually supporting my efforts and they are also targets. If you are a supporter please share these videos with others. I will continue to hold my Demand Peace Sign and teach people that stop to ask questions but there are too many Occultists in this area and all around the DC Metro Area and they work hard to discredit me and push the idea onto the public that my message is a joke. They lie about what my message is. And people believe the lie and think its all a joke or that I don't know any real information. Please Wake Up!!!

John Newton: Hymn Writer and Preacher
John Newton who was born in London, [England], July 24, 1725, and died there Dec. 21, 1807, occupied an unique position among the founders of the Evangelical School, due as much to the romance of his young life and the striking history of his conversion, as to his force of character. His mother a pious Dissenter, stored his childish mind with Scripture, but died when he was seven years old. At the age of eleven, after two years' schooling, during which he learned the rudiments of Latin, he went to sea with his father. His life at sea teems with wonderful escapes, vivid dreams and sailor recklessness. He grew into an abandoned and godless sailor. The religious fits of his boyhood changed into settled infidelity, through the study of' Shaftesbury and the instruction of one of his comrades.
Disappointing repeatedly the plans of his father, he was flogged as a deserter from the navy, and for fifteen months lived, half-starved and ill-treated, in abject degradation under a slave-dealer in Africa. The one restraining influence of his life was his faithful love for his future wife, Mary Catlett, formed when he was seventeen, and she only in her fourteenth year. A chance reading of Thomas à Kempis sowed the seed of his conversion; which quickened under the awful contemplations of a night spent in steering a water-logged vessel in the face of apparent death (1748). He was then twenty-three. The six following years, during which he commanded a slave ship, matured his Christian belief. Nine years more, spent chiefly at Liverpool, in intercourse with Whitefield, Wesley, and Nonconformists, in the study of Hebrew and Greek, in exercises of devotion and occasional preaching among the Dissenters, elapsed before his ordination to the curacy of Olney, Bucks (1764). The Olney period was the most fruitful of his life. His zeal in pastoral visiting, preaching and prayer-meetings was unwearied. He formed his lifelong friendship with [William] Cowper, and became the spiritual father of [Thomas] Scott the commentator.
At Olney his best works — Omicron's Letters (1774); Olney Hymns (1779): Cardiphonia, written from Olney, though published 1781 — were composed. As rector of St. Mary Woolnoth, London, in the centre of the Evangelical movement (1780-1807) his zeal was as ardent as before. In 1805, when no longer able to read his text, his reply when pressed to discontinue preaching, was, "What, shall the old African blasphemer stop while he can speak!" The story of his sins and his conversion, published by himself, and the subject of lifelong allusion, was the base of' his influence; but it would have been little but for the vigour of his mind (shown even in Africa by his reading Euclid drawing its figures on the sand), his warm heart, candour, tolerance, and piety. These qualities gained him the friendship of Hannah More, Cecil, Wilberforce, and others; and his renown as a guide in experimental religion made him the centre of a host of inquirers, with whom he maintained patient, loving, and generally judicious correspondence, of which a monument remains in the often beautiful letters of Cardiphonia.
As a hymn-writer, Montgomery says that he was distanced by Cowper. But Lord Selborne's contrast of the "manliness" of Newton and the "tenderness" of Cowper is far juster. A comparison of the hymns of both in The Book of Praise will show no great inequality between them. Amid much that is bald, tame, and matter-of-fact, his rich acquaintance with Scripture, knowledge of the heart, directness and force, and a certain sailor imagination, tell strongly. The one splendid hymn of praise, "Glorious things of thee are spoken," in the Olney collection, is his. "One there is above all others" has a depth of realizing love, sustained excellence of expression, and ease of development. "How sweet the name of Jesus sounds" is in Scriptural richness superior, and in structure, cadence, and almost tenderness, equal to Cowper's "Oh! for a closer walk with God." The most characteristic hymns are those which depict in the language of intense humiliation his mourning for the abiding sins of his regenerate life, and the sense of the withdrawal of God's face, coincident with the never-failing conviction of acceptance in The Beloved. The feeling may be seen in the speeches, writings, and diaries of his whole life.
