A braid (also referred to as a plait) is a complex structure or pattern formed by interlacing three or more strands of flexible material such as textile yarns, wire, or hair. Compared to the process of weaving which usually involves two separate, perpendicular groups of strands (warp and weft), a braid is usually long and narrow, with each component strand functionally equivalent in zigzagging forward through the overlapping mass of the others.
The most common braid is a flat, solid, three-stranded structure. More complex braids can be constructed from an arbitrary number of strands to create a wider range of structures.
Braids have been made for thousands of years in many different cultures and for a variety of uses. For the nomadic peoples of Africa, India, North and South America, and the Middle East, braiding was a practical means of producing useful and decorative textiles. In other areas, such as the Pacific islands (where leaves and grasses are braided) and for many hill tribes, braids are made using minimal equipment. It was only when braiding became a popular occupation in the home or school, as it is in China and Japan, and when the Industrial Revolution came about, that specific tools were developed to increase production and make it easier to produce more complicated patterns of braids.
A French braid, or French plait, is a type of braided hairstyle. The French braid includes three sections of hair that are braided together from the crown of the head to the nape of the neck. Variations on this hairstyle include the Dutch braid and the Fishtail braid.
In the simplest form of three-strand braid, all the hair is initially divided into three sections, which are then simultaneously gathered together near the scalp. In contrast, a French braid starts with three small sections of hair near the crown of the head, which are then braided together toward the nape of the neck, gradually adding more hair to each section as it crosses in from the side into the center of the braid structure. The final result incorporates all of the hair into a smoothly woven pattern over the scalp. If the main mass of hair is initially parted into two or more sections along the scalp that are kept separate from one another, multiple French braids may be created, each in its own section. One unique feature about the French braid is that an individual can braid their own hair without the help of others. The difficulty of braiding can depend on the type of hair the individual has, some styles of hair are easier to braid then others. The length of hair also plays a role in the ability to braid; shorter hair can be more of a challenge. Bobby pins can be useful when braiding shorter hair or hair with many different layers to keep all of the hair in the French braid in place. There are many different ways of French braiding that make it unique; a person can braid at a slant, braid into a bun and only braid the bangs are just a few examples.

I think my most favorite thing about the twisted crown braid tutorial it is it takes literally five seconds to do. Okay so not literally but definitely less than five minutes. I love half up styles and think they work so well when your hair is at an awkward stage. I'm still missing my side braids but for the most part when I leave it down I feel like my hair is semi-long again. There are certain styles I still can't do that require me to pull my side pieces back so I've really been gravitating towards these halo type braids, I hope you lo...

This 5 Strand Braid is one of my favorite braids. I’ve had a lot of requests for a tutorial on it - I hope this will help you learn it. What's hard about this style is how you manage the strands. It’s a good idea to count the pieces as you go along and repeat “under and over” every time you start to braid from each side. The first many times may be a struggle, but hang in there - it's really worth the effort once you learn to master this technique. If it's too hard for your arms, you can also create it as a half up style. Then, you just stop incorporating hair when you reach the top of your ears and braid down a few stitches. Thanks for watching and thank you for all your love and support – I really appreciate it :) X Nina
THUMBS UP if you love braided hairstyles, & love challenging ones! I fell in love with this Infinity braid (or Figure 8 braid as I like to call it), as soon as I saw it. I was instantly drawn into how unique, and intricate this braid looked. I think it’s the perfect Spring or Summer hairstyle, and will definitely turn heads. This braid took me a lot of practice, so don’t give up if you’re having a hard time. Let me know what your current favourite braid is, I’d love to hear! xo Alex RELATED VIDEOS ▼ How I tone my hair: http://goo.gl/SLW5iA Super Simple Updo: http://goo.gl/9xRslM Easiest up-do ever: http://goo.gl/GwDOr9 How to: Dutch fishtail: http://goo.gl/052PZE How to: 5 Strand Braid: http://goo.gl/xSQdqs FOLLOW ME ▼ SUBSCRIBE: http://bit.ly/1bI8thE Hair, Fashion, Beauty, Lifest...

The Zipper Braid is a beautiful and unique style, and you'll be sure to get a lot of attention wearing it! It looks complicated but the technique is simple once you learn it. I hope this tutorial will help and you'll try out this braid :) Xx Nina
This Dutch Halo Braid is such a great staple hairstyle! The tutorial requests I receive the most are half up hairstyles and everyday hairstyles. I definitely think this works for both and once you master it I have no doubt it'll become one of your favorites. There is an older tutorial for this hairstyle but I do it a little differently now. I asked on Instagram whether or not you'd love to see a new tutorial for this version and received a resounding 'yes!' I hope this tutorial will help give you a few new tips for creating your own version. If you love this hairstyle be sure to share it with your besties and let me know what you think in the comments below! The iconic 90s double bun or “Space Buns” are so popular and added some braids, you’ve got an even cooler style! It’s a very comfortable style that I think you can wear for many occasions, but right now it would be a perfect festival style! It’s also great if your hair is medium length because it secures the hair that would normally fall out of a high bun. This is one of the harder styles to create on yourself, so if you haven’t tried to braid upside down before, I suggest that you practice on making a single braid first and that you have tried to do a Dutch Braid before. I also recommend that you take a break between the two braids ;) Before you start be sure that you have two elastic bands and a comb nearby that you can part you hair with. -----------------------------------------...
One of my favorite hair tutorials is the Double Braided Ponytail. It looks like such an intricate braid but is actually two braids in one. It got me thinking though, what if it was just one braid? That's where this braid came from. It looks like a four strand braid but I did both of them side by side and they are definitely not the same. This one has a more woven look and needless to say, I am pretty darn excited about it. I love how intricate this does look but with all braids there's a pattern and once you get that down it's fairly easy to master. I am curious to know if you've seen this type of braid before but either way I really hope you love this tutorial as much as I do. xo, Missy Supplies: Rattail comb, 2 hair elastics, 1 hair band, flat iron, and hairspray. ------------------...

so frustrated
that something (so) complicated
could hang over my head
on my first day back
and already i'm treading on unsteady ground
so strike me down or check me out
so elated
that this soul so understated
could be making eyes at me
but first i'll be
another innocent victim looking for some
sense of sympathy
in the middle of a state
the sorry story of a star
that goes "here's my heart"
it's a start
and if anything, we haven't seen everything
in the middle of a stage
there's a girl and a guitar
but there's your car
have we forgotten who we are?
we haven't seen anything
so i'm told that chicago's cold
can't be cool as california
for the first time ever
i feel severed yet smooth removed
if you approve then check it out
to what do i owe this attention
i'm only half of the reflection
and the conversation goes
oh, nevermind (oh, nevermind)
to what do i owe this tension
if deception's fine
then this is divine
divine define divine
on my first day back
and already i've settled on
