50Fotos of Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia. These photos are from my brief trip to Chuuk in July 2006, but I lived there with my wife from 1974-76 as a Peace Corps Volunteer and also conducted master's thesis research there in 1979. In those days, the islands were known as Truk, and were part of the U.S, Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. These photos are of the main lagoon island of Weno (Moen), and of my former home island of Tonowas (Dublon). Some of the people pictured I've known for more than 35 years. The Chuukese song "Romonum I" was recorded in the islands by the late David Fanshawe. See the other 50Fotos slideshows.

It was powered by a six cylinder air cooled diesel engine which could propel the tank up to 30 mph. During "Operation Hailstone", the San Francisco Maru was damaged by dive bombers and photos show her stern on fire before she finally sank. The San Francisco Maru was discovered in 1972. In 1969, French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau and his team explored Truk Lagoon. Following Cousteau's 1971 television documentary about the lagoon and its ghostly remains, the place became a scuba diving paradise, drawing wreck diving enthusiasts from around the world to see its numerous, virtually intact sunken ships. The shipwrecks and remains are sometimes referred to as the "Ghost Fleet of Truk Lagoon". Scattered mainly around the Dublon, Eten, Fefan and Uman islands within the Truk group, a number of the shipwrecks lie in crystal clear waters less than fifteen meters below the surface. In waters devoid of normal ocean currents, divers can easily swim across decks littered with gas masks and depth charges and below deck can be found numerous human remains. In the massive ships' holds are row upon row of fighter aircraft, tanks, bulldozers, railroad cars, motorcycles, torpedoes, mines, bombs, boxes of munitions, radios, plus thousands of other weapons, spare parts, and other artifacts. Of special interest is the wreck of the submarine I-169 Shinohara which was lost when diving to avoid the bombing. The sub had been part of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

More information about the video content bellow: 1. The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) are Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk (formerly Truk) and Yap, stretching over a vast expanse of Pacific Ocean just north of the equator. Together, the states comprise around 607 islands (a combined land area of approximately 702 km2 that cover a longitudinal distance of almost 2,700 km just north of the equator. 2. During World War II, Chuuk Lagoon was the Empire of Japan's main base in the South Pacific theatre. In 1944 it was destroyed by US bombers, in an attack that lasted 3 days, sinking 12 warships and 32 merchant ships. The consequences of the attack made Chuuk lagoon the biggest graveyard of ships in the world. 3. No visit in Yap is complete until you have a chance to see the Stone Money Banks located throughout the island. Massive pieces of Stone Money line a stone pathway in the villages displaying the wealth of the village. Here, size does matter as each piece has a value based on where it came from and how it was made. 4. Every year since 1952, the United States Air force has carried out ‘Operation Christmas Drop’ to give gifts to the people of the remote Kapingamarangi Atoll. The gifts are donated by the people of Guam. As well as useful supplies like fishing nets and tools, the parcels also contain toys and school supplies for the children of Kapingamarangi. The boxes are dropped from a large cargo plane, on parachutes, and can weigh anything up to 180 kg each. 5. Nan Madol is an ancient ruined city built on man-made islets. It is a ceremonial compound, built on a network of man-made structures just offshore, on the eastern side of Pohnpei. It was a scene of human activity as early as the first or second century AD. By the 8th or 9th century, islet construction had started. 6. The Rumung people, living in the far north, are fearfully conservative. The island of Rumung has been forbidden to all foreigners since the 17th century. The absolute preservation of culture and tradition was paramount to the community of Rumung. 7. For such a small and isolated country, it had a lot of contacts with the western world. Since the 19th century, it was ruled by Spain, Germany, Japan and the US. Their former capital city, Kolonia, was built by the Spanish, but after independence the Micronesians built their own, new capital: Palikir. This video showcases the many treasures of the Micronesian island of Kosrae which is located halfway between Guam and Hawaii in the middle of the great blue Pacific Ocean. Kosrae offers the dream of sunny, unspoiled beaches, caressed by crystal waters and deep blue skies. Vivid green is the color of it's tropical mindscape and calm is the color of it's fragrant refreshing air..On beautiful Kosrae, pleasure calls in the smiles of its gracious people, in the lure of its sea for fishing and play, and most of all in its restful, scenic way of life. Rich in historical sites and ruins, this jewel of Micronesia was a favorite haven of pirate Bully Hayes. Now it can be yours.

Video and photos from our November 2010 trip to Palau and Yap: I took the day off from diving. In this video segment I gathered all of the 2 and 3 second clips I shot in Palau and Yap. I did not editing or rejecting...just took evertying. This should give you a decent sample of the Lumix DMC-TZ10 camera and DMW-MCTZ10 housing performance under all sorts of conditions.

From sunken treasures, to deep sea artifacts, these are 10 Unbelievable Discoveries in the South Pacific Subscribe to American Eye http://goo.gl/GBphkv 5. New Zealand Sunken Treasure Divers who were cleaning a local harbor were rewarded with an amazing discovery of 868 gold coins! Finders Keepers! The harbor of Wellington has been quite messy lately and many glass bottles, and plastic materials were being removed but they never expected anything like this! They appear to be of high value but no one could figure out exactly why they were thrown away into the harbor. The crew couldn’t tell exactly where they were from and the coins origins are still somewhat of a mystery. After being down there for a long period of time, it’s believed the markings on them eroded. So we guess they won’t be giving them back to the original owner! 4. Vanuatu Skull Trying to piece together the history of pacific islands can be difficult at times due to the lack of stone structures. Besides the Tongan gate and Easter Island, there really isn’t a ton of evidence on their ancient ancestors. Things that can survive the test of time, are skeletons. This 3,000 year old skull you see in this photo, was separated from the body and placed in an ancient pot. This comes from the Lapita culture who lived on the island of Vanuatu. This civilization inhabited many of the south pacific islands like Samoa, Tonga and all the way to eastern coast of Papua New Guinea Extensive scientific research was done and it’s believed that the Lapita culture are originally descendants from the island of Taiwan. These were found at the bottom of a Cemetery on Efate Island. This discovery also leads archaeologists to conclude that the Lapita were the first settlers of these micro islands 3. Jungle Debris After all the intense fighting that took place in the South Pacific during world war two, there’s bound to be plenty of scraps from all kinds of military vehicles. People are still making discoveries of all the wreckage that took place between 1941-1945. Here in this photo we see an Imperial Japanese Fighter plane that was shot down during the Battle of Guadalcanal, in the Solomon Islands. Children on the islands still play at the beaches, right next the debris of a Japanese Imperial Navy transport vessel. The islands could be scared for quite some time, even 70 years later. With advancements in drones and aerial technology, they’re able to locate more wreckage than ever before, like this Sherman tank left in the shallow waters of the Northern Mariana Islands. 2. Radiation on Bikini Atoll Once the USA had captured much land in the South Pacific during world war II from the Japanese, they wanted to continue testing the weapons that won them the war to the absolute limit, and they would do so on their new territory. Bikini Atoll was where the US tested their most devastating weapons like the hydrogen bomb. Castle Bravo was the codename for the dry fuel hydrogen bomb that was detonated and the 2nd most power device ever detonated only behind russia’s tsar bomba. Bikini atoll was the site for 23 nuclear detonations. Researchers from Columbia University in the US recently discovered that the islands are still radioactive and no knows for sure when they’ll be safe to live here. 1. Chuuk Lagoon In 1944, there were more than 60 Japanese warships and 200 aircraft that met their watery grave in chuuk lagoon in the South Pacific, located west of Micronesia where an intense battle took place. This was one of Japan’s strategic bases that was wiped out by allied forces. On land, this place looks like a tropical paradise, but below the surface of the water lies the biggest graveyard of ships in the world. Due to its history and the spooky remains, it’s become a popular scuba diving location and left nearly untouched due to fear of bombs going off. It’s been rediscovered in recent years and explorers have had the opportunity to see the devastation. Here in this photo were see a tank covered in barnacles at the bottom of the lagoon. This photo here displays a car that was inside a Japanese ship that sank. Some scuba divers will even come across skulls.

The San Francisco Maru was built in 1919. When World War II began she was taken out of semi-retirement by the Japanese Navy and pressed into service carrying military cargo. One of the San Francisco's most striking features are the three Japanese Type-95 light tanks that still remain on her deck. The Type-95 tank was manned by a crew of three. It possessed 1/2 inch armor. It weighed 7.5 tons and carried one 37 MM main gun and 2-7MM machine guns. The wreck sits upright. The cargo holds contain sea mines, torpedoes, bombs, artillery, aircraft engines, anti-tank and small arms munitions, and many other artifacts. LENGTH: 385 Ft. / 117m DEPTH: Superstructure: 150 Ft./45.7m Deck: 165 Ft./50m Bottom: 205 Ft./63m Gross Tonnage: 5,831 tons
