North Korea ( listen), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; Chosŏn'gŭl: 조선민주주의인민공화국; hancha: 朝鮮民主主義人民共和國; MR: Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a country in East Asia, in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name Korea is derived from the Kingdom of Goguryeo, also spelled as Koryŏ. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. North Korea shares a land border with China to the north and northwest, along the Amnok (Yalu) and Tumen rivers, and a small section of the Tumen River also forms a border with Russia to the northeast. The Korean Demilitarized Zone marks the boundary between North Korea and South Korea.

Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1910. After the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II in 1945, Korea was divided into two zones by the United States and the Soviet Union, with the north occupied by the Soviets and the south by the Americans. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948 two separate governments were formed: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north, and the Republic of Korea in the south. An invasion initiated by North Korea led to the Korean War (1950–53). Although the Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire, no official peace treaty was ever signed. Both states were accepted into the United Nations in 1991.

South Korea ( listen), officially the Republic of Korea (Hangul: 대한민국; hanja: 大韓民國; RR: Daehanminguk, listen) and commonly referred to as Korea, is a sovereign state in East Asia, constituting the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name Korea is derived from the ancient Kingdom of Goguryeo, also known as Koryŏ. Highly urbanized at 92%, Koreans lead a distinctive urban lifestyle with half of them living in the Seoul Capital Area, the world's second largest city with over 25 million residents and a leading global city with the fourth largest economy, rated in 2016 as the world's most livable megacity and safest city to live in. Highly mountainous, Korea is a popular winter sport destination in Asia, hosting the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The earliest Korean pottery dates to 8000 BC, with three kingdoms flourishing at 1st century BC. One of them, Goguryeo, ruled Northeast China, parts of Russia and Mongolia under Gwanggaeto the Great. Since their unification into Silla and Balhae in the 7th century, Korea enjoyed over a millennium of relative tranquility under long lasting dynasties with innovations like Hangul, the unique alphabet created by Sejong the Great in 1446, enabling anyone to easily learn to read and write. Its rich and vibrant culture left 17 UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritages of Humanity, the third largest in the world, along with 12 World Heritage Sites. Korea was annexed by Imperial Japan in 1910 due to its strategic and central location, after whose surrender in 1945, it was divided into North and South Korea. A North Korean invasion lead to the Korean War (1950–53). Peace has since mostly continued with the two agreeing to work peacefully for reunification and the South solidifying peace as a regional power with the world's 10th largest defence budget and strong global alliances. In 2016, Korea was rated as the world's safest country to live in, with the lowest crime rate.

Winter Olympic Games

The Winter Olympic Games (French: Jeux olympiques d'hiver) is a major international sporting event that occurs once every four years. Unlike the Summer Olympics, the Winter Olympics feature sports practiced on snow and ice. The first Winter Olympics, the 1924 Winter Olympics, was held in Chamonix, France. The original five sports (broken into nine disciplines) were bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, Nordic skiing (consisting of the disciplines military patrol,cross-country skiing, Nordic combined, and ski jumping), and skating (consisting of the disciplines figure skating and speed skating). The Games were held every four years from 1924 until 1936, after which they were interrupted by World War II. The Olympics resumed in 1948 and was again held every four years. Until 1992, the Winter and Summer Olympic Games were held in the same years, but in accordance with a 1986 decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to place the Summer and Winter Games on separate four-year cycles in alternating even-numbered years, the next Winter Olympics after 1992 was in 1994.

Hot n Cold

"Hot n Cold" is a song by American singer Katy Perry. The song was written by Perry, Dr. Luke and Max Martin and produced by Dr. Luke and Benny Blanco for her second studio album, One of the Boys (2008). The track was released as the album's second single on September 9, 2008. The lyrics address an unstable romantic relationship caused by a partner's mood swings.

The song received mixed to positive reviews from music critics. It reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Perry's second consecutive top three single, after her previous hit "I Kissed a Girl". It also became Perry's second top five single in the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand, and topped the charts in Finland, Germany, Canada, Norway, Spain and Denmark, among others. To date, "Hot n Cold" has sold over six million digital downloads worldwide, making it one of the best-selling singles worldwide and one of Perry's highest-selling singles to date.

To promote "Hot n Cold", Perry marked the song's live debut with a performance on NBC's Today. She also performed the song at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards, which she hosted. The song's music video, which was directed by Alan Ferguson, was released on October 1, 2008 and features Perry as a bride who is about to get married to her fiancé, who experiences a daydream in which she pursues him after he flees from the church. "Hot n Cold" was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. Perry also performed the song on the Hello Katy Tour, California Dreams Tour, and Prismatic World Tour.

북한 예술단, 목요일 강릉아트센터에서 첫 공연 Seats at the Opening and the Closing Ceremonies are normally the hottest tickets in town during the Olympics,... but they had a rival this year that blew them away,... two extremely rare performances by a North Korean orchestra. Over 150-thousand South Koreans applied for the mere 1,060 tickets that were up for grabs. Our Won Jung-hwan went to the first concert in Gangneung and filed this report. An audience of more than 5-hundred-50 people were treated to a unique performance by a North Korean art troupe on the eve of the opening of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in the city of Gangneung. The lucky audience members were randomly selected from a pool of nearly 40-thousand people who previously applied for a ticket to watch the troupe's first performance in South Korea. "I felt sense of cultural similarity regardless of its difference between the two nations,… and the overall performance was well structured." "Although we had a lot of expectations, we really enjoyed the show,… we could see that they prepared a lot for this performance. But at the same time, I wish this is not just a one-off thing just for the Olympics,… I wish the two country exchange more after the Olympics." The 140 member-strong art troupe otherwise known as the Samjiyon Band and led by Hyon Song-wol , arrived in South Korea on February 6. The band is comprised of more than 50 elite musicians known for their diverse repertoire,... which even includes songs from U.S. animated movies like "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King." Thursday's show at Gangneung Arts Center featured popular songs by household South Korean artists such as Lee Sun-hee and Shim Soo-bong . They sang songs which we were familiar for us to sing along,… I was impressed by Choi Jin-hee's 'Maze of Love', 'Arirang', and 'Everybody ChaChaCha'. Another widely anticipated performance was that of the so-called Moranbong Band, a group of talented musicians and all-female singers who are known for their colorful performances and are often compared to South Korean K-pop girl bands. This marks the first time since 2002 that Pyongyang sent an art troupe to South Korea. It is also the largest North Korean artistic delegation to ever perform on a South Korean stage. Meanwhile, nearly 300 conservative activists held a rally in front of the Gangneung Art Center, some 4 hours prior the performance. The protest ended without incident. All eyes are on whether there will be any kind of development in inter-Korean relations during the ruling family member's unprecedented visit to the South. Our Moon Connyoung joins us live from the top office. Right. The North Korean leader's private jet carrying a high-level delegation including leader Kim Jong-un's sister landed in South Korea earlier this afternoon. They're here to attend the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics - that's in an hour from now. Roughly twenty minutes behind schedule, the entourage led by the North's nominal head of state Kim Yong-nam arrived at Incheon International Airport. They were greeted by South Korea's Unification Minister and the deputy director of the presidential Blue House National Security Council. With that, the 30-year-old Kim Yo-jong has become the first member of North Korea's ruling family to set foot in the South since the Korean War in the early 1950s. After a brief encounter between high-level officials from the two Koreas, the North Koreans including the influential sister of Kim Jong-un traveled by South Korea's KTX bullet train to PyeongChang. They have since arrived in PyeongChang... and the North's nominal head of state Kim Yong-nam is currently attending the Pre Opening Ceremony Reception hosted by South Korean President Moon Jae-in. What to look out for from the reception this evening: will there be contact between the U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and North Korea's ceremonial head of state Kim Yong-nam? What kind of vibe will we see from the Moon, Kim Yong-nam encounter? Are we expecting any contact between President Moon Jae-in and the Kim Yo-jong? While Kim Yo-jong is NOT attending the Pre Opening Ceremony Reception tonight... President Moon Jae-in has said he will host a luncheon for the North Koreans on Saturday. Sources say an informal luncheon between Kim and the South Korean delegation would give her more freedom to interact with the South Koreans than anybody else in the North Korean delegation. Hosting an informal lunch for the high level North Korean delegation avoids any protocol format where only one main speaker has a voice. That main speaker would normally be Kim Yong-nam, the head of the delegation and North Korea's ceremonial head of state, but in this case, what the younger sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has to say will take much more significance and meaning. Both sides are maintaining a delicate balance to avoid any diplomatic upsets that could risk overshadowing the Winter Olympics. Daniel.
