Mashhad (Persian: مشهد ; listen ) is the second most populous city in Iran and capital of Razavi Khorasan Province. It is located in the northeast of the country, close to the borders of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. Its population was 2,749,374 at the 2011 census and its built-up (or metro) area was home to 2,782,976 inhabitants including Mashhad Taman and Torqabeh cities. It was a major oasis along the ancient Silk Road connecting with Merv in the East.
The city is most famous and revered for housing the tomb of Imam Reza, the eighth Shia Imam. Every year, millions of pilgrims visit the Imam Reza shrine and pay their tributes to Imam Reza.
Mashhad is also known as the city of Ferdowsi, the Iranian poet of Shahnameh, which is considered to be the national epic of Iran. The city is the hometown of some of the most significant Iranian literary figures and artists such as Mehdi Akhavan-Sales, the famous contemporary poet, and Mohammad-Reza Shajarian, the traditional Iranian singer and composer. Ferdowsi and Akhavan Sales are both buried in Tus, an ancient city that is considered to be the main origin of the current city of Mashhad.
Iran (/aɪˈræn/ or i/ɪˈrɑːn/;Persian: Irān – ایران [ʔiːˈɾɒːn]), also known as Persia (/ˈpɜːrʒə/ or /ˈpɜːrʃə/), officially the Islamic Republic of Iran (جمهوری اسلامی ایران – Jomhuri ye Eslāmi ye Irān [d͡ʒomhuːˌɾije eslɒːˌmije ʔiːˈɾɒːn]), is a country in Western Asia. It is bordered to the northwest by Armenia, the de facto Nagorno-Karabakh, and Azerbaijan; with Kazakhstan and Russia across the Caspian Sea; to the northeast by Turkmenistan; to the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan; to the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman; and to the west by Turkey and Iraq. Comprising a land area of 1,648,195 km2 (636,372 sq mi), it is the second-largest country in the Middle East and the 18th-largest in the world. With 78.4 million inhabitants, Iran is the world's 17th-most-populous country. It is the only country that has both a Caspian Sea and an Indian Ocean coastline. Iran has long been of geostrategic importance because of its central location in Eurasia and Western Asia, and its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz.
'Alī ibn Mūsā al-Rezā (Arabic: علي بن موسى الرضا) also called abu al-Hasan is commonly known as Ali al-Reza (c. 29 December 765 – 23 August 818) also commonly known in Persia as Imam Reza (Persian: امام رضا), was a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad and the eighth Shia Imam after his father Musa al-Kadhim and before his son Muhammad al-Jawad. He was an Imam of knowledge according to the Zaydi (Fiver) Shia school and Sufis. He lived in a period when Abbasid caliphs were facing numerous difficulties, the most important of which was Shia revolts. The Caliph Al-Ma'mun thought out a remedy for this problem by appointing Al-Ridha as his successor, through whom he could involve the Imam in worldly affairs. However, according to the Shia view, when Al-Ma'mun saw that the Imam gained even more popularity, he decided to correct his mistake by poisoning him. The Imam was buried in a village in Khorasan, which afterwards gained its new name, Mashhad, meaning the place of martyrdom.

Welcome to Mashhad! I travelled from Tehran to Mashhad by train, this is a continuation of my travels to the capital city where I spent most of my time. I wasn't feeling very well during this trip but I tried to visit a few places and film as much as I could while in the beautiful city of Mashhad, Iran. Many people are pleasantly surprised with Iran and just how kind, friendly and welcoming the people are. It's a very rich culture and of late extremely misunderstood, which is heartbreaking as there is so much to learn and experience.. from the food to the flamboyant festive nature of these wonderful people. You will not be disappointed with this fascinating country, and the same goes for Pakistan, although they are both rather different, they are equally amazing! Hope you enjoy! My Firs...

In the holy city of Mashad in the north-east of Iran, the eighth Shia Imam was laid to rest. Hence, Mashhad is the most frequented pilgrimage site in Iran. But the sanctity of this city is not confined to Iran alone. In early 2017, Mashhad was named as the cultural capital of the Muslim World. It is the annual convention of about 600 tour guides from all over Iran and it is hosted by Mashhad and its tour guides association. During this time Mashhadi hosts take us to the main attractions of this region, including the shrine of Imam Reza, mausoleums of Ferdowsi, Attar and Khayam. This event ends with a short trip to the beautiful and historical village of Kang located on the outskirts of Shandiz and Torqabeh.
Mashhad is a major northeastern metropolis and is considered the Islamic capital of Iran. It is not only a famous religious destination, but also a historical one. Many of the the greatest Persian scientists and poets have risen from Khorasan and especially Mashhad.

When it comes to Tehran, it's impossible to avoid politics and easy to overlook the Iranian city's thriving culinary scene. In our first installment of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, our host Gelareh Kiazand introduces us to the bustling street food offerings in the city. We begin our journey at the capital city's Grand Bazaar, since that's where commodities first arrive. Gelareh beelines for the market's food stands, where she samples dried fruits and nuts while waiting out the line at Moslem Restaurant, frequented by up to 5,000 kebab connoisseurs daily—well worth it for her favorite tah chin. At the more modest and bygone Tajrish Bazaar, she's the proverbial kid in a candy store, wading through copper and carpet vendors in search of sweet snacks, such as grape molasses and lavasak (fru...
During our one month traveling in Iran we visited many amazing places. Isfahan (Esfahan) and Shiraz were one of the most memmorable cities. In Isfahan we visited Jāmeh Mosque, Siosehpol bridge and many other places. We also met three iranian students there. In Shiraz we visited Shah Cheragh mosque and we were invited to local shopkeepers home to meet his family. :) In next video we will show you our day in Persepolis - the capital of Persian empire. My name's Michael and I'm the Marketing Manager for Wild Frontiers. I'm here at the magnificent site of Persepolis in Iran. I've been in Iran for two weeks now and so far I've been enchanted by this fascinating country. CITIES The capital Tehran is most people's starting point, and in this busy city you can see ostentatious ornaments from the royal household in the crown jewels museum, and wander around the Shah's old residence, Golestan Palace. Just north of Tehran you can visit the Elburz Mountains for skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer. But the real highlights lie elsewhere. In the off-the-beaten-track city of Yazd you'll find a cityscape dotted with the ingenious wind tunnels -- which could be described as the world's first air-conditioning system - the ancient Zoroastria...
