Rogier van der Weyden
Rogier van der Weyden (Dutch: [roːˈɣiːr vɑn dɛr ˈʋɛi̯də(n)]) or Roger de la Pasture (1399 or 1400 – 18 June 1464) was an Early Netherlandish painter. His surviving works consist mainly of religious triptychs, altarpieces and commissioned single and diptych portraits. Although his life was generally uneventful, he was highly successful and internationally famous in his lifetime. His paintings were exported – or taken – to Italy and Spain, and he received commissions from, amongst others, Philip the Good, Netherlandish nobility and foreign princes. By the latter half of the 15th century, he had eclipsed Jan van Eyck in popularity. However his fame lasted only until the 17th century, and largely due to changing taste, he was almost totally forgotten by the mid-18th century. His reputation was slowly rebuilt during the following 200 years; today he is known, with Robert Campin and van Eyck, as the third (by birth date) of the three great Early Flemish artists ('Vlaamse Primitieven' or 'Flemish Primitives'), and widely as the most influential Northern painter of the 15th century.Karel van Mander wrote that the great artistic contribution of Rogier van der Weyden lies in his ideas, his composition and rendering of the soul's expression through pain, happiness or anger, and the tempering of this emotional testimony to the subject matter of his work.

Vanaf 14 juni 2018 wordt De bewening van Christus, (c. 1460-1464) van Rogier van der Weyden voor de ogen van de bezoekers in het Mauritshuis gerestaureerd. Dit gebeurt in een tijdelijk atelier in de tentoonstellingszaal. De restauratie is noodzakelijk omdat de vernis van het schilderij door de jaren heen vergeeld is. Hierdoor komen de heldere kleuren van het kunstwerk minder tot hun recht. Ook worden eerdere, in de loop van de tijd verkleurde, restauraties (retouches) verwijderd. Na de restauratie, die naar verwachting eind 2018 wordt afgerond, is het schilderij weer te bewonderen in zijn oorspronkelijke, stralende kleuren. Van der Weyden painted mostly religious themes – with the exception of several portraits his worldly work has been lost. He never signed his work, so art historians to this day are trying to discover which works are his. Most likely he ran a workshop with a large number of assistants and students.
Characteristic of his work are the clear composition and the lively use of colors, in which he incorporated much symbolism. His altarpieces are considered his highlights, including the Descent from the Cross and the multitych with the Last Judgment in Beaune, where he tried to rival Van Eyck's Lamb of God. Van der Weyden strongly influenced later painters, among whom his student Hans Memling.
Rogier van der Weyden died in Brussels in 1464, where he was buried in the St. Gudula Church, now known as the St. Michael's Cathedral. He was reasonably prosperous and renowned during his life. For at least half a century his style was much imitated."

Rogier van der Weyden was born Rogier de la Pasture in Doornik (Tournai). As far as we know, he entered late into the services of master painter Robert Campin, in 1427, a year after marrying Elizabeth Goffaert.
His career took off quickly after that. In 1432 he established himself as a master in Doornik, rising to the position of Brussels City Painter in 1435. From that day on he only worked under his Flemish name. There are clues that he stayed in Bruges between 1432 and 1435; whatever the case, the influence of Van Eyck on his work is clearly felt. Brussels at the time was a good place to work in as it was quickly developing into a regional center.
In the Holy Year of 1450 Van der Weyden traveled to Rome. Along the way he composed several works for the Medici family in Florence.
Van der Weyden painted mostly religious themes – with the exception of several portraits his worldly work has been lost. He never signed his work, so art historians to this day are trying to discover which works are his. Most likely he ran a workshop with a large number of assistants and students.
Characteristic of his work are the clear composition and the lively use of colors, in which he incorporated much symbolism. His altarpieces are considered his highlights, including the Descent from the Cross and the multitych with the Last Judgment in Beaune, where he tried to rival Van Eyck's Lamb of God. Van der Weyden strongly influenced later painters, among whom his student Hans Memling.
Rogier van der Weyden died in Brussels in 1464, where he was buried in the St. Gudula Church, now known as the St. Michael's Cathedral. He was reasonably prosperous and renowned during his life. For at least half a century his style was much imitated."

Vanaf 14 juni 2018 wordt De bewening van Christus, (c. 1460-1464) van Rogier van der Weyden voor de ogen van de bezoekers in het Mauritshuis gerestaureerd. Dit gebeurt in een tijdelijk atelier in de tentoonstellingszaal.
De restauratie is noodzakelijk omdat de vernis van het schilderij door de jaren heen vergeeld is. Hierdoor komen de heldere kleuren van het kunstwerk minder tot hun recht. Ook worden eerdere, in de loop van de tijd verkleurde, restauraties (retouches) verwijderd. Na de restauratie, die naar verwachting eind 2018 wordt afgerond, is het schilderij weer te bewonderen in zijn oorspronkelijke, stralende kleuren.
Beginning June 14, 2018, The Lamentation of Christ (c.1460-1464) by Rogier van der Weyden will be restored in a specially built studio in the exhibition space of the Mauritshuis.
The painting needs to be restored, because the painting's varnish has yellowed over the course of many years. As a result, the work’s bright colours no longer come into their own. The treatment will remove previous restorations (retouches), which have also discoloured over time. The restoration, which is expected to be completed at the end of 2018, will reveal the masterpiece’s original, radiant colours.

Rogier Van Der Weyden painted the Deposition from the cross. This remarkable painting is full of detail that Kelly explains so well.
The painting was commissioned for an altarpiece for the Leuven Guild of Archers for their chapel. Many Art Historians consider it the most influential work of the 15th century, certainly one of the most dramatic religious paintings of its era. A story that can become so overly familiar that it loses its power is made fresh in Van Der Weyden’s hands.
Rogier van der Weyden
Rogier van der Weyden (Dutch: [roːˈɣiːr vɑn dɛr ˈʋɛi̯də(n)]) or Roger de la Pasture (1399 or 1400 – 18 June 1464) was an Early Netherlandish painter. His surviving works consist mainly of religious triptychs, altarpieces and commissioned single and diptych portraits. Although his life was generally uneventful, he was highly successful and internationally famous in his lifetime. His paintings were exported – or taken – to Italy and Spain, and he received commissions from, amongst others, Philip the Good, Netherlandish nobility and foreign princes. By the latter half of the 15th century, he had eclipsed Jan van Eyck in popularity. However his fame lasted only until the 17th century, and largely due to changing taste, he was almost totally forgotten by the mid-18th century. His reputation was slowly rebuilt during the following 200 years; today he is known, with Robert Campin and van Eyck, as the third (by birth date) of the three great Early Flemish artists ('Vlaamse Primitieven' or 'Flemish Primitives'), and widely as the most influential Northern painter of the 15th century.Karel van Mander wrote that the great artistic contribution of Rogier van der Weyden lies in his ideas, his composition and rendering of the soul's expression through pain, happiness or anger, and the tempering of this emotional testimony to the subject matter of his work.
