While humbled by our relative size, our brains can none the less comprehend, to some extent, just how large the Universe is.

"In a finite world, a cosmic perspective isn’t a luxury, it is a necessity."

Wrist Worn Gadget Allows Researchers to Capture Real Life Sleep

"There has been practically no possibility of getting detailed sleep structures in a normal life setting over a long period of time," says Till Roenneberg of LMU Munich in Germany. "You can't easily give somebody an EEG to take home and have next to the bed. You can't do this over six weeks or six months. We are going to see things nobody has seen before."

Has Apple done enough to compensate for its #BatteryGate mistakes? - Apple closes 2017 with a scandal: after failing to disclose that it artificially slows down iPhones with aging batteries, it has left users with older iPhones wondering about the slower performance of their device and pondering whether they should buy a new iPhone. Worth waiting for

Rhododendron arboretum

Bhutan

Here in Norway the last weeks have been a dismal affair! Snowfall going sleet and then rain, only to freeze over and make everything dangerously slippery is the norm so far, and now the last downpour has melted most of the snow again, but not enough to also melt the black ice on the roads, trails and wherever someone has walked before and compacted what snow was there.

No winter wonderland to ease this dark season. Only bland, grey, black and dark.

Yet we know that this is temporary and one day the sun will have won over darkness, and snow will be a distant memory.

That is when nature explodes with colors, and perhaps nowhere else is it as magical as in the Himalayas when the rhododendrons are in bloom

They stand alone as tall beacons of splendor and abundance, or together as forests of a dreamland of another world.

It is in the midst of this we remember how a long winter is worth it, as the joy of spring also melts away all that is bland, grey, black and dark of winter. Without this darkness the spring would also not have been so intensely wonderful and filling our hearts with gratitude and appreciation of the flow of the universe.

Selenium Protects a Specific Type of Interneurons in the Brain

Exactly 200 years ago, the Swedish scientist Jöns Jacob Berzelius discovered the trace element selenium, which he named after the goddess of the moon, Selene. Besides its industrial applications (chemical industry, production of semiconductors and toners), selenium is an essential trace element and indispensable for humans, many animals and some bacteria. A team led by Dr. Marcus Conrad, research group leader at the Institute of Developmental Genetics (IDG) at Helmholtz Zentrum München, showed for the first time why selenium is a limiting factor for mammals.

Computers can now read emotions — here’s how that will help you sell products

'... Affectiva’s software is used by one-third of the global Fortune 500 companies, says El Kaliouby. “A lot of advertisers want to understand how their customers are connecting with their content and their products because emotions drive decisions; our purchase decisions, whether we choose to share content or not, as well as our loyalty and our brand perception.” Using facial emotion detection, Affectiva can tell whether an advertisement is engaging, which segments are boring or offensive – remember the toe fungus commercial featuring Digger the Dermatophyte, also known as Schimpie in Dutch? – and even if the viewer identifies with the featured characters. ...'

Novel Complementary Effects of Estrogen Treatment in Multiple Sclerosis

A study by UCLA researchers reveals the cellular basis for how the hormone estrogen protects against damage to the central nervous system in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). The researchers found that estrogen treatment exerts positive effects on two types of cells during disease --immune cells in the brain and also cells called oligodendrocytes. Complementary actions on these two types provide protection from disease.

As Patently Apple reports, the $999 billion lawsuit was filed by one Violetta Mailyan in California, stating that “each member of the Class had to buy a newer iPhone model because the performance of their older iPhone model had slowed down as a result of [the] Defendant’s purposeful conduct.”

Mailyan’s suit goes on to claim that, had Apple disclosed that it slowed down iPhones, Class members could have obtained new batteries rather than replace their devices. Other plaintiffs reiterate that the “throttle” defect forced them into upgrading their handsets.
