The Grass Roots

The Grass Roots is an American rock band that charted frequently between 1966 and 1975. It was originally the creation of Lou Adler and songwriting duo P. F. Sloan and Steve Barri. In their career, they achieved two gold albums, one gold single and charted singles a total of 21 times. Among their charting singles, they achieved Top 10 three times, Top 20 three times and Top 40 eight times. They have sold over twenty million records worldwide.

Until his death in 2011, early member Rob Grill and a newer lineup of the Grass Roots continued to play many live performances each year. Since 2012, band members chosen by Grill are carrying on the legacy of the group with nationwide live performances.

The founding years

The name "Grass Roots" (originally spelled as one word "Grassroots") originated in mid-1965 as the name of a band project by the Los Angeles songwriter and producer duo of P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri. Sloan and Barri had written several songs in an attempt by their record company, Dunhill Records (owned by Lou Adler), to cash in on the budding folk rock movement. One of these songs was "Where Were You When I Needed You," which was recorded by Sloan and Barri. Sloan provided the lead vocals and played guitar, Larry Knechtel played keyboards, Joe Osborn played the bass and Bones Howe was on drums. The song was released under "The Grass Roots" name and sent, as a demo, to several radio stations of the San Francisco Bay area.

Grassroots

A grassroots movement (often referenced in the context of a political movement) as defined by Webster's Third International Dictionary, is one which uses the people in a given district as the basis for a political or economic movement. Grassroots movements and organizations utilize collective action from the local level to affect change at the local, regional, national, or international level. Grassroots movements are associated with bottom-up, rather than top-down decision making, and are sometimes considered more natural or spontaneous than more traditional power structures. Grassroots movements utilize a variety of strategies from fundraising and registering voters, to simply encouraging political conversation. Goals of specific movements vary, but the movements are consistent in their focus on increasing mass participation in politics.

The idea of grassroots is often conflated with participatory democracy. The Port Huron Statement, a manifesto seeking a more democratic society, says that to create a more equitable society, "the grass roots of American Society" need to be the basis of civil rights and economic reform movements. The terms can be distinguished in that grassroots often refers to a specific movement or organization, whereas participatory democracy refers to the larger system of governance.

"Live For" is a song by Canadian singer The Weeknd from his debut studio album Kiss Land (2013). The song, which features guest vocals from fellow Canadian rapper Drake, was released as the album's fourth single on September 3, 2013.

On July 27, 2013, The Weeknd posted a picture with Drake being in the studio together, dispelling past rumors of them feuding.

History

The band was founded in 2005 by Ryan Lietru, Mike Reynolds, David Morrison, Matt Tyler and Jon Lauters. Lauters and Tyler (who later became known as Madison Skylights) left the band soon after, and were replaced by Mattie Montgomery (formerly of Besieged) and Brennan Schaeuble. Schaeuble was replaced by Ryan's brother Brandon. On April 1, 2008, they released their first studio album, produced by Facedown Records, Ekklesia, a term from Greek and is a self-designation of the first Christians that you wanted to express their faith. On May 8, 2008 appeared from said album of the most successful titles - Agape - also known as video. Their second album, Portraits, was released on June 9, 2009, on the same label, and peaked at No. 15 of the Billboard Christian albums chart. Different biblical personalities are portrayed on the album: Old Testament prophet Ezekiel, Joel, Elijah and Isaiah, and the Pharisee Nicodemus, Zacharias, Saul (later Paul) of Tarsus and Immanuel (Jesus). The last song of the album, "Talmidim" - designation for followers of a rabbi, here are probably the disciples of Jesus, that all Christians meant) - deals with the Bible verse Ezekiel 36:26-28.
