Kate Hansen’s story is about overcoming mind games and self-doubts. She embraced the struggle of becoming an Olympic athlete in luge, an unlikely sport for a Southern California girl who loves to surf and hates the cold. Kate made the most of what was literally a crippling setback. What’s ironic is that Kate isn’t remembered for being one of the best lugers in the world—she’s remembered for the person she is, and for the positive and lighthearted person she chose to be at the Olympic games.
Kate Hansen is a luge athlete, wannabe dancer, and world traveler. She competed for seven years around the world and her last stop was in Sochi, Russia at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. She is currently attending college at Brigham Young University where she studies public relations and business. She loves skiing, people, and making fun of herself.

Kate Hansen
Kate Elizabeth Hansen (born June 9, 1992) is an American luger who has competed since 2003. In 2008 she became the youngest Junior World Champion at age fifteen. She has been on the National Team since 2007. She finished 16th in the women's singles event at a World Cup event in Calgary on November 21, 2009. Hansen recently won the USA Luge National Championship in October 2013 while having a broken foot. Hansen came in 10th place in the Sochi 2014 Olympics. She recently teamed up with Jimmy Kimmel in a prank video which made it seem that a wolf had broken into the apartment where she was staying. A few days later, they admitted to the prank after having scared the media, as well as security.
Career
Hansen has been competing since 2003. She would practice luge in California by riding a skateboard down hills on her back. In 2008, at the age of fifteen, Kate was the youngest-ever Junior World Champion. She has been on the United States National Team since 2007, and she finished 16th in the women's singles at a World Cup event in Calgary on November 21, 2009. Hansen recently won the USA Luge National Championship in October 2013 with a broken foot. In January 2014 she was the U.S. Olympic Committee's athlete of the month. Hansen finished 10th place in the Sochi 2014 Olympics.

From being the LA Dodger's MC at baseball games, to surfing any chance she can get, Kate Hansen is a complete representation of the relaxed vibes that emanate from her hometown of La Cañada, California. Being from Southern California, she’s the last person you would expect to compete in the Winter Olympics. But when you consider her top 10 finish in the 2014 Sochi games, and her gold medal finish in Latvia (the highest that any American had placed in 16 years in a World Cup event), “compete” might be an understatement. Kate Hansen is a luge athlete, wannabe dancer, and world traveler. She competed for seven years around the world and her last stop was in Sochi, Russia at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. She is currently attending college at Brigham Young University where she studies public relations and business. She loves skiing, people, and making fun of herself.

Kate Hansen’s story is about overcoming mind games and self-doubts. She embraced the struggle of becoming an Olympic athlete in luge, an unlikely sport for a Southern California girl who loves to surf and hates the cold. Kate made the most of what was literally a crippling setback. What’s ironic is that Kate isn’t remembered for being one of the best lugers in the world—she’s remembered for the person she is, and for the positive and lighthearted person she chose to be at the Olympic games.
