Iraq (/ɪˈræk/, i/ɪˈrɑːk/, or /aɪˈræk/; Arabic: العراق al-‘Irāq, Kurdish: Êraq), officially the Republic of Iraq (Arabic: جمهورية العراق Jumhūrīyat al-‘Irāq; Kurdish: كۆماری عێراق Komar-i ‘Êraq), is a country in Western Asia. The country borders Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Kuwait to the southeast, Saudi Arabia to the south, Jordan to the southwest, and Syria to the west. The southern part of Iraq is within the Arabian Peninsula. The capital, Baghdad, is in the centre of the country and its largest city. The largest ethnic groups in Iraq are Arabs and Kurds. Other ethnic groups include Assyrians, Turkmen, Shabakis, Yazidis, Armenians, Mandeans, Circassians, and Kawliya. Around 95% of the country's 36 million citizens are Shia or Sunni Muslims, with Christianity, Yarsan, Yezidism, and Mandeanism also present.
Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (36 mi) on the northern Persian Gulf and its territory encompasses the Mesopotamian Alluvial Plain, the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range, and the eastern part of the Syrian Desert. Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run south through the centre of Iraq and flow into the Shatt al-Arab near the Persian Gulf. These rivers provide Iraq with significant amounts of fertile land.

(27 Feb 2015) In gunsmith Bahktiyar Sadr-Aldeen's workshop in the Kurdish city of Irbil, every weapon has a story. Sadr-Aldeen, an Iraqi Kurd, has seen business increase by 50 percent since last June, when Islamic State militants took over Mosul, Iraq's second largest city, 82 kilometres (52 miles) west of Irbil. The Kurdish fighting force known as the pershmerga has been at war against the Islamic State militant group ever since. Sadr-Aldeen says there is "no professional company" to fix all the weapons that "naturally break" during the fighting. "That is why I fix them. We cannot just throw them away, because we are in a war," he explained. Aged 36, Sadr-Aldeen already has more than a quarter-century of experience, making him the peshmerga's top gunsmith in the region. He says h...

Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe Inside Iraq looks at the crisis facing Iraq's healthcare system. Experts say that as many as half of the estimated 655,000 civilian deaths in the war so far might have been avoided if proper medical care had been provided but billions of dollars intended for the reconstruction of the country's medical and hospital network have gone missing while 18,000 doctors have left the country and the remaining ones have been the targets of kidnappings and murder. At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to the voiceless.' Arabic/Eng/Nat Four months after being gunned down in Iraq, Saddam Hussein's eldest son Uday Hussein said Tuesday he expected to be able to walk again within weeks. German and Iraqi doctors operated on Uday Sunday. Officials said the surgery was to remove a bullet that lodged near the patient's spine, but Uday himself told APTV the surgery was to repair his shattered left leg. Uday Hussein is still in hospital following last December's assassination attempt. On Tuesday, he spoke to APTV two days after German and Iraqi doctors operated on him. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) "The operation was carried out last Sunday by a group of foreign surgeons from friendly countries. Some Iraqi doctors also took part - with the exception of the French. March 2004 For Iraqis, the breakdown of their health service is just as concerning as the decline in security. At Baghdad Central Children's hospital, used needles litter the filthy corridors. There is rotting garbage and a cesspool underneath the wards. "I'm afraid the smell and diseases coming from that pool will make her even more sick," fears one patient's mother. The biggest threat to the children here comes from cross-infection caused by unsanitary conditions. Only three of the six wards are operating because of staff or equipment shortages. Some patients even have to sleep on the floor because there are not enough beds. "The Americans said they would build hospitals, treat children," complains one patient's father. "But all you find is killing, illness, and death." Produced ...

The First Battle of Fallujah, also known as Operation Vigilant Resolve, was an operation to root out extremist elements of Fallujah and an act of retaliation to, as well as an attempt to apprehend the perpetrators of, the killing of four U.S. contractors in April 2004. The chief catalyst for the operation was the highly publicized killing and mutilation of four Blackwater USA private military contractors, and the killings of five American soldiers in Habbaniyah a few days earlier. The battle polarized public opinion within Iraq. The Second Battle of Fallujah—code-named Operation Al-Fajr and Operation Phantom Fury—was a joint American, Iraqi, and British offensive in November and December 2004, considered the highest point of conflict in Fallujah during the Iraq War. Natural Sound XFA Saddam Hussein oversaw an impromptu parade of Iraqi tanks, warplanes and missiles in Baghdad on Sunday. The spectacle was seen as a show of support for the Palestinian uprising against Israel. The ceremony was billed as "The Call of Jerusalem Day" and featured a truck bearing a statue resembling Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque, the focus of an emotional dispute between Israel and the Palestinians. Iraq normally celebrates Army Day on January 6, and it was unclear whether another parade would be held on that day. Saddam signalled the start of the procession by firing two rifle shots from the presidential box, which was positioned opposite a new statue of himself. Iraqi warplanes, helicopters, bombers, missiles and tanks were exhibited in the parade which took place in ...

Try Not to stand out Rather than driving fast, surrounded by bodyguards try to blend in as much as possible. Women should dress in local fashion and men should grow out their facial hair. 2. Don't travel near the Syrian, Turkish, or Iranian borders. You may encounter large refugee flows. 4. Don't Bring Bad Luck. Broadcast in 2003. Invading Iraq is a special two-hour documentary investigation recounting the key strategies, battles and turning points of the war from both sides of the battlefield - ending with the story of Saddam's capture. The documentary takes viewers behind the scenes of the allied invasion and advance on Baghdad. Through first-hand accounts from key commanders, frontline soldiers and civilians on both sides of the conflict, the film offers a rare battlefield perspective of the war as seen through the eyes of those who lived it. It also shows how the false assessment of Saddam Hussein's alleged weapons of mass destruction was just the first in a series of major intelligence failures that shaped the course of the war and led to the unstable occupation America and Britain are now m...
In 2014, Islamic State militants swept into Western Iraq's Anbar Province, overrunning Iraqi security forces, enslaving minorities, and causing thousands to flee for their lives. The jihadist group captured Iraq’s largest city, Mosul, and the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah, where hundreds of US troops died fighting the Islamic State’s predecessor. Now, two years later, the Iraqi security forces, with help from Iranian-supported Shiite militias and US military advisors and warplanes, are fighting to take back towns and cities in Anbar, one battle at a time. But it’s a difficult task: Anbar has been the crucible of Iraq’s insurgency, and is the country’s Sunni heartland — long marginalized by and hostile to the Shiite-led government in Baghdad.
