In the process of all this, the mule assisted in uncovering a spy, Mareen, who pretended to be lost among the jungles, but was actually... This is a perfect family film, even amusing to the adults. If people all have enough sense as this talking mule does, the world will be a much better place than its present condition.

The unconnected chapters are like parables, some with a moral. The slight and comic Ginepro returns naked to St. Mary's of the Angels, having given away his tunic, but not his ricotta. The aged Giovanni shouts and holds onto his cape; the beatific St. Clair pays a visit. Humble Francis doubts his leadership, hugs a leper, and sends his brothers spinning, dizzy, and smiling into the world. This brotherhood is infused with whimsy as well as belief.

Donald O'Connor
Donald David Dixon Ronald O’Connor (August 28, 1925 – September 27, 2003) was an American dancer, singer, and actor who came to fame in a series of movies in which he co-starred alternately with Gloria Jean, Peggy Ryan, and Francis the Talking Mule.
He is best known today for his role as Gene Kelly's friend and colleague Cosmo Brown in Singin' in the Rain (1952).
Early years
Though he considered Danville, Illinois to be his home town, O’Connor was born in St. Elizabeth Hospital in Chicago. His parents, Effie Irene (née Crane) and John Edward "Chuck" O'Connor, were vaudeville entertainers. His father's family was from County Cork, Ireland. When O'Connor was only a few years old, he and his sister Arlene were in a car crash outside a theater in Hartford, Connecticut; O'Connor survived, but his sister was killed. Several weeks later, his father died of a heart attack while dancing on stage in Brockton, Massachusetts. O'Connor at the time was being held in the arms of the theater manager, Mr. Morris Simms.

O médico curitibano Paulo Furtado tem em mãos um documento de muito valor histórico e cultural para a cidade. Trata-se da partitura original da canção "Monsieur Le Consul à Curityba", ganhadora do primeiro Grande Prêmio da Canção Francesa, de 1950. A descoberta foi feita em 15 de junho de 1964, pelo tio de Paulo, o dentista curitibano Arlindo Furtado, hoje residente no Rio de Janeiro. A intenção dos dois é doar o registro a um museu local para que todos os curitibanos tenham acesso a parte dessa história, de 62 anos, praticamente desconhecida. Como conta o médico, na década de 60 o tio, graduado em odontologia, foi a Paris para fazer uma especialização. Os colegas do instituto onde Arlindo estudava na França sabiam que ele era de Curitiba e certa vez, em uma brincadeira, perguntaram se ele não seria o cônsul de Curitiba. Foi assim que ele ficou sabendo da história dessa música, premiada no grande Prêmio da França, de 1950, no cassino da cidade de Deauville, norte de Paris. Curioso, ele foi atrás e percorreu os Bouquinists (espécie de quiosques de livros e discos antigos) nas margens do Rio Sena, até que encontrou a partitura original e o disco, conta Paulo. A canção tem a música assinada por Marc Hevral e a letra de Fernand Vimont e Henry Le Marchand. A mesma já foi regravada por, pelo menos, outros quatros artistas e gravadoras diferentes. Classificada como um samba lento, a letra da canção, em resumo, fala de alguém que está no Brasil em uma cidade pequena e charmosa, um canto tranquilo onde a vida é doce e que se chama Curitiba. Em cada linha da partitura, é descrita como vive bem a pessoa que, na música, é chamada de senhor cônsul de Curitiba O cônsul de que fala a canção era o cônsul da Inglaterra em Curitiba Blas Gomm que recebeu em sua casa o autor da canção. A casa é aquela tombada pelo Patrimônio e que foi removida do seu local original e o grande terreno naquele tempo, todo belamente ajardinado de que fala a canção é o local onde está atualmente o shopping center na avenida do batel . ps. Juggler extraordinaire Francis Brunn (1922 - 2004) left quite a mark during his lengthy career, which began in the 1930s. Inspired and heavily influenced by the sensational and innovative Italian juggler/acrobat Enrico Rastelli, Brunn would go on to develop his own tricks and style. As a youngster Brunn began training in acrobatics and wrestling, and soon added juggling to his passions. Playing soccer (aka football) helped him learn to balance a ball; a skill that would come in handy for his later profession. He's believed to have been the first performer to juggle 10 rings, and, like Rastelli, his acrobatic skills added an extra dimension to his performances. But while most of his act moved at a frenetic pace and displayed his incredible speed, it was the minimalist routines -- sometimes involving just one ball -- where it was possible to fully appreciate his exceptional rhythm and balancing skills. The ball would sometimes appear to defy gravity and was mesmerizing to watch. As far as the performance in this 1955 video goes, by his high standards Brunn would likey have considered this an off night due to the uncharacteristic misses that occur -- but even one of his off night performances could rival that of most jugglers. You can find videos here on YouTube of Brunn performing some of these same routines over a decade later without the misses, but this one's still worth adding to the small handful of his early performances already present; and it does feature some nice close-up shots. I believe this may be the only video currently on YouTube of Brunn performing in the 1950s (the black & white Jack Benny Show video is from 1961; an even earlier black & white one is from 1941). His assistant here definitely deserves some accolades; not only for tossing the items to him on time and on target, but also for managing to run backwards so effortlessly in heels! Later in his career Brunn studied flamenco dancing and incorporated it into his performances. It was a perfect fit. He embraced juggling as an art form, not just a series of tricks, and has left behind enough of a legacy to inspire future performers just as Rastelli had inspired him.

Plot: Prashant Verma works as a reporter with "Navkranti", which is owned and operated by Pandey. Francis is produced by Robert Arthur, directed by Arthur Lubin, and stars Donald O'Connor. The distinctive voice of Francis is a voice-over by actor Chill Wills. In the process of all this, the mule assisted in uncovering a spy, Mareen, who pretended to be lost among the jungles, but was actually... This is a perfect family film, even amusing to the adults. If people all have enough sense as this talking mule does, the world will be a much better place than its present condition.

Juggler extraordinaire Francis Brunn (1922 - 2004) left quite a mark during his lengthy career, which began in the 1930s. Inspired and heavily influenced by the sensational and innovative Italian juggler/acrobat Enrico Rastelli, Brunn would go on to develop his own tricks and style. O médico curitibano Paulo Furtado tem em mãos um documento de muito valor histórico e cultural para a cidade. Trata-se da partitura original da canção "Monsieur Le Consul à Curityba", ganhadora do primeiro Grande Prêmio da Canção Francesa, de 1950. A descoberta foi feita em 15 de junho de 1964, pelo tio de Paulo, o dentista curitibano Arlindo Furtado, hoje residente no Rio de Janeiro. A intenção dos dois é doar o registro a um museu local para que todos os curitibanos tenham acesso a parte dessa história, de 62 anos, praticamente desconhecida.
Como conta o médico, na década de 60 o tio, graduado em odontologia, foi a Paris para fazer uma especialização. Os colegas do instituto onde Arlindo estudava na França sabiam que ele era de Curitiba e certa vez, em uma brincadeira, perguntaram se ele não seria o cônsul de Curitiba. Foi assim que ele ficou sabendo da história dessa música, premiada no grande Prêmio da França, de 1950, no cassino da cidade de Deauville, norte de Paris. Curioso, ele foi atrás e percorreu os Bouquinists (espécie de quiosques de livros e discos antigos) nas margens do Rio Sena, até que encontrou a partitura original e o disco, conta Paulo.
A canção tem a música assinada por Marc Hevral e a letra de Fernand Vimont e Henry Le Marchand. A mesma já foi regravada por, pelo menos, outros quatros artistas e gravadoras diferentes. Classificada como um samba lento, a letra da canção, em resumo, fala de alguém que está no Brasil em uma cidade pequena e charmosa, um canto tranquilo onde a vida é doce e que se chama Curitiba. Em cada linha da partitura, é descrita como vive bem a pessoa que, na música, é chamada de senhor cônsul de Curitiba
O cônsul de que fala a canção era o cônsul da Inglaterra em Curitiba Blas Gomm que recebeu em sua casa o autor da canção. Juggler extraordinaire Francis Brunn (1922 - 2004) left quite a mark during his lengthy career, which began in the 1930s. Inspired and heavily influenced by the sensational and innovative Italian juggler/acrobat Enrico Rastelli, Brunn would go on to develop his own tricks and style.
As a youngster Brunn began training in acrobatics and wrestling, and soon added juggling to his passions. Playing soccer (aka football) helped him learn to balance a ball; a skill that would come in handy for his later profession. He's believed to have been the first performer to juggle 10 rings, and, like Rastelli, his acrobatic skills added an extra dimension to his performances. But while most of his act moved at a frenetic pace and displayed his incredible speed, it was the minimalist routines -- sometimes involving just one ball -- where it was possible to fully appreciate his exceptional rhythm and balancing skills. The ball would sometimes appear to defy gravity and was mesmerizing to watch.
As far as the performance in this 1955 video goes, by his high standards Brunn would likey have considered this an off night due to the uncharacteristic misses that occur -- but even one of his off night performances could rival that of most jugglers. You can find videos here on YouTube of Brunn performing some of these same routines over a decade later without the misses, but this one's still worth adding to the small handful of his early performances already present; and it does feature some nice close-up shots. I believe this may be the only video currently on YouTube of Brunn performing in the 1950s (the black & white Jack Benny Show video is from 1961; an even earlier black & white one is from 1941). His assistant here definitely deserves some accolades; not only for tossing the items to him on time and on target, but also for managing to run backwards so effortlessly in heels!
Later in his career Brunn studied flamenco dancing and incorporated it into his performances. It was a perfect fit. He embraced juggling as an art form, not just a series of tricks, and has left behind enough of a legacy to inspire future performers just as Rastelli had inspired him.

With summer coming to a close, we begin our annual tribute to the fall television season of fifty years ago. Great to have you onboard for the ride... we hope to bring you some nonstalgia, entertainment and perspective on vintage television of yesteryear.
The 1967-1968 Television season was a transitional time for the medium, reflecting the transition America was going through as the decade of the 1960s reached its final phase and began showing signs of what might come in the early 1970s.
In our minds, the 1960s was a three act play, with a beginning (1960-1963), a middle (1964-1966) and an end (1967-1969). Broadcast television in America reflected that progression of social change and innovation as the decade unfolded each year. That middle stage of the 1960s was a time of incredicle change on television: the migration from black and white to color television, the rise in youth oriented programming, the steady decline of westerns, and the beginning of the inclusion of more women and people of color on shows to better reflect the civil rights and women's movements in America.
The 1967-1968 season would usher in the beginning of a second golden age of variety programming, while saying goodbye to the spy and super-hero/sci-fi craze that had swept the nation and the airwaves during the 1964-1966 era on television.
Over the coming months, we'll looking back at many of the new shows that were introduced during that 1967-68 season:

Here is Donald O'Connor and Vera-Ellen from Call Me Madam (1953). Boisterous, fun-loving, and popular Washington D.C. hostess Sally Adams is appointed U.S. Ambassador to the Grand Duchy of Lichtenburg, Europe's smallest country. In Lichtenburg, the Duke and Duchess are negotiating a political marriage for their niece, Princess Maria in exchange for a substantial dowry. However, the country is desperate for funds, and turns to the inexperienced ambassador for a much needed U.S. loan. Sally refuses to talk money, that is, until she meets the ultra charming Gen. Cosmo Constantine. Meanwhile, Sally's press attaché Kenneth Gibson falls head over heels for Princess Maria. Call Me Madam is a 1953 American Technicolor musical film directed by Walter Lang, with songs by Irving Berlin, based on the stage musical of the same name.
The film, with a screenplay by Arthur Sheekman, starred Ethel Merman, Donald O'Connor, Vera-Ellen, Billy DeWolfe, George Sanders, and Walter Slezak. The film replaced "Washington Square Dance" with the older "International Rag", and interpolated "What Chance Have I With Love?" from Berlin's Louisiana Purchase (sung and danced by Donald O'Connor). A soundtrack album was released by Decca both as a 10-inch LP and as a set of three 7-inch EPs, and was released on CD in 2004 by Hallmark. The numbers "The Hostess with the Mostes'" and "You're Just in Love" are included on the Rhino Records CD set Irving Berlin in Hollywood. The film was out of circulation for many years but was issued on DVD in 2004.
Merman won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. Alfred Newman won the Academy Award for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture, and Irene Sharaff was nominated for her costume design. Lang was nominated for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures by the Directors Guild of America and the Grand Prize at the 1953 Cannes Film Festival.

Here is Donald O'Connor and Vera-Ellen from Call Me Madam (1953). Boisterous, fun-loving, and popular Washington D.C. hostess Sally Adams is appointed U.S. Ambassador to the Grand Duchy of Lichtenburg, Europe's smallest country. In Lichtenburg, the Duke and Duchess are negotiating a political marriage for their niece, Princess Maria in exchange for a substantial dowry. However, the country is desperate for funds, and turns to the inexperienced ambassador for a much needed U.S. loan. Sally refuses to talk money, that is, until she meets the ultra charming Gen. Cosmo Constantine. Meanwhile, Sally's press attaché Kenneth Gibson falls head over heels for Princess Maria. Call Me Madam is a 1953 American Technicolor musical film directed by Walter Lang, with songs by Irving Berlin, based on the stage musical of the same name.
The film, with a screenplay by Arthur Sheekman, starred Ethel Merman, Donald O'Connor, Vera-Ellen, Billy DeWolfe, George Sanders, and Walter Slezak. The film replaced "Washington Square Dance" with the older "International Rag", and interpolated "What Chance Have I With Love?" from Berlin's Louisiana Purchase (sung and danced by Donald O'Connor). A soundtrack album was released by Decca both as a 10-inch LP and as a set of three 7-inch EPs, and was released on CD in 2004 by Hallmark. The numbers "The Hostess with the Mostes'" and "You're Just in Love" are included on the Rhino Records CD set Irving Berlin in Hollywood. The film was out of circulation for many years but was issued on DVD in 2004.
Merman won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. Alfred Newman won the Academy Award for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture, and Irene Sharaff was nominated for her costume design. Lang was nominated for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures by the Directors Guild of America and the Grand Prize at the 1953 Cannes Film Festival.

Hollywood, 1927: the silent-film romantic team of Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) is the toast of Tinseltown. While Lockwood and Lamont personify smoldering passions onscreen, in real life the down-to-earth Lockwood can't stand the egotistical, brainless Lina. He prefers the company of aspiring actress Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds), whom he met while escaping his screaming fans. Watching these intrigues from the sidelines is Cosmo Brown (Donald O'Connor), Don's best pal and on-set pianist. Cosmo is promoted to musical director of Monumental Pictures by studio head R.F. The disastrous preview of the team's first talkie has the audience howling with derisive laughter. On the strength of the plot alone, concocted by the matchless writing team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green, Singin' in the Rain is a delight. But with the addition of MGM's catalog of Arthur Freed-Nacio Herb Brown songs -- "You Were Meant for Me," "You Are My Lucky Star," "The Broadway Melody," and of course the title song -- the film becomes one of the greatest Hollywood musicals ever made.

This is a complete episode of The Bobby Darin Amusement Company, also featuring Donald O'Connor and Dionne Warwick. The first 25 minutes are in poor quality black and white (the sound improves after the first song), and then the screen goes black for around half a minute, before the second half of the show is in colour and much better quality. This finds Bobby in very different form than in The Bobby Darin Show, made just six months later, and issued in edited form on DVD. In this current video, he seems much more full of energy, singing better, and the show is blessed with a much better script than the later series, and is altogether more satisfying.

The 1967-1968 Television season was a transitional time for the medium, reflecting the transition America was going through as the decade of the 1960s reached its final phase and began showing signs of what might come in the early 1970s.
In our minds, the 1960s was a three act play, with a beginning (1960-1963), a middle (1964-1966) and an end (1967-1969). Broadcast television in America reflected that progression of social change and innovation as the decade unfolded each year. That middle stage of the 1960s was a time of incredicle change on television: the migration from black and white to color television, the rise in youth oriented programming, the steady decline of westerns, and the beginning of the inclusion of more women and people of color on shows to better reflect the civil rights and women's movements in America.
The 1967-1968 season would usher in the beginning of a second golden age of variety programming, while saying goodbye to the spy and super-hero/sci-fi craze that had swept the nation and the airwaves during the 1964-1966 era on television.
Over the coming months, we'll looking back at many of the new shows that were introduced during that 1967-68 season:

The Flying Nun
The Guns of Will Sonnet
