A man in his 50s has died while diving off Garden Island.

Volunteer Marine Rescue received a distress call at about 8.40am this morning, informing them that the diver was being given CPR on board a boat, 15 kilometres from Garden Island.

A paramedic from Volunteer Marine Rescue boarded the private vessel, which had around four men on board, and continued to treat the diver as they raced towards the shore.

The man was taken to the Point Perron boat ramp, where he was met by an ambulance that took him to Rockingham Hospital just after 10.10am.

But he was unable to be resuscitated and later pronounced dead.

The man's cause of death is not currently known, and his identity has not been released.

A report on the man's death will now be prepared for the Coroner.
