1864 (MDCCCLXIV) was a leap year starting on Friday (dominical letter CB) of the Gregorian calendar and a leap year starting on Wednesday (dominical letter ED) of the Julian calendar, the 1864th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 864th year of the 2nd millennium, the 64th year of the 19th century, and the 5th year of the 1860s decade. Note that the Julian day for 1864 is 12 calendar days difference, which continued to be used from 1582 until the complete conversion of the Gregorian calendar was entirely done in 1929.
The Battle of Dybbøl (Danish: Slaget ved Dybbøl; German: Erstürmung der Düppeler Schanzen) was the key battle of the Second Schleswig War and occurred on the morning of 18 April 1864 following a siege starting on 7 April. Denmark suffered a severe defeat against Prussia, which decided the war. Dybbøl was also a battlefield in the First Schleswig War.
Following the annexation of the Duchy of Schleswig in November 1863 by the Danish king Christian IX (who was also the Duke of Schleswig), Prussian and Austrian troops invaded Jutland in January 1864.
The defending Danish army were equipped with smaller guns and an older type of rifle. The Prussian army used the Dreyse needle-gun, a breech-loading rifle that could be loaded while the user was lying down. Since the Danes had to load their older muzzle-loading rifles while standing, they were better targets for the Prussians.
The Dybbøl fort lies in a short blunt peninsula that defends against access to the fort by land and featured an enclosed pier for the ferry across the Alssund to Sønderborg on the island of Als.
Dybbøl (German: Düppel) is a small town, with a population of 2,495 (1 January 2014) in the southeastern corner of South Jutland, Denmark. It is around 6 km (3.7 mi) west of Sønderborg.
Dybbøl has been a battlefield twice. In the First War of Schleswig and in the Second War of Schleswig. During the 1864 Second War of Schleswig, the Danish Army withdrew from the traditional fortified defence line of Dannevirke (after waters and marshes which supported its flanks froze hard in a hard winter) and marched for Dybbøl to find a better defendable position. Although much artillery was abandoned, and the evacuation was executed in a snow-laden north gale in winter, the army arrived almost intact. The army entrenched itself at the Dybbøl Trenches, which became the scene of the siege and subsequent Battle of Dybbøl (7 April – 18 April 1864). This battle resulted in a Prussian-Austrian victory over Denmark.
In the following peace settlement, Denmark surrendered Schleswig. Following World War I, Denmark recovered the northern part of Schleswig as a result of the Schleswig Plebiscites as described in the Treaty of Versailles.
The Second Schleswig War (Danish: 2. Slesvigske Krig; German: Deutsch-Dänischer Krieg) was the second military conflict as a result of the Schleswig-Holstein Question. It began on 1 February 1864, when Prussian forces crossed the border into Schleswig.
Denmark fought Prussia and Austria. Like the First Schleswig War (1848–51), it was fought for control of the duchies of Holstein and Lauenburg due to the succession disputes concerning them when the Danish king died without an heir acceptable to the German Confederation. Decisive controversy arose due to the passing of the November Constitution, which integrated the Duchy of Schleswig into the Danish kingdom in violation of the London Protocol. Reasons for the war were the ethnic controversy in Schleswig and the co-existence of conflicting political systems within the Danish unitary state.
The war ended on 30 October 1864, when the Treaty of Vienna caused Denmark's cession of the Duchies of Schleswig, Holstein, and Saxe-Lauenburg to Prussia and Austria.
****THE BEGINNING IS IRRELEVANT IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE SERIES, BUT I ADDED SUBTITLES BECAUSE EVERYONE ASKED ME TO, SKIP TO 11:00 FOR WHAT MAKES SENSE**** More info in the description. Song title in the pinned comment. Let me explain some things so you don't have to ask or be confused in the comments. This is an episode from the Danish TV show 1864, it's episode 8 so some of the things might seem a bit strange as it is connected to other episodes. I personally made the subtitles for this, my English is quite good, and the subtitles are accurate in spirit, they are not always direct translations, some parts do not have subtitles as it makes no sense at all if you haven't watched the series. The Subtitles begin when the Soldiers sit in the trench. This is not a propaganda movie, but a dr...

This time, however, Denmark is not facing a small rebel army but two major German powers: Prussia and Austria. Så lade os undersøge hvorfor. For det første, havde russerne et ønske om at gøre Hertugdømmerne Holstein, slesvig og launburg til en del af preussen. Preussen betrag...
