Brian Boru (c. 941 – 23 April 1014, Old Irish: Brian Bóruma mac Cennétig; Middle Irish: Brian Bóruma; modern Irish: Brian Bóramha) was an Irish king who ended the domination of the High Kingship of Ireland by the Uí Néill. Building on the achievements of his father, Cennétig mac Lorcain, and especially his elder brother, Mathgamain, Brian first made himself King of Munster, then subjugated Leinster, eventually becoming King of Ireland. He is the founder of the O'Brien dynasty.
With a population of under 500,000 people, Ireland had over 150 kings, with greater or lesser domains. The Uí Néill king Máel Sechnaill mac Domnaill, abandoned by his northern kinsmen of the Cenél nEógain and Cenél Conaill, acknowledged Brian as High King at Athlone in 1002.
In the decade that followed, Brian campaigned against the northern Uí Néill, who refused to accept his claims, against Leinster, where resistance was frequent, and against the Norse-Gaelic Kingdom of Dublin.
Brian's hard-won authority was seriously challenged in 1013 when his ally Máel Sechnaill was attacked by the Cenél nEógain king Flaithbertach Ua Néill, with the Ulstermen as his allies. This was followed by further attacks on Máel Sechnaill by the Dubliners under their king Sihtric Silkbeard and the Leinstermen led by Máel Mórda mac Murchada. Brian campaigned against these enemies in 1013.
Brian (sometimes spelled Bryan) is a male given name of Irish and Breton origin, as well as a surname of Occitan origin. It is common in the English-speaking world. It is possible that the name is derived from an Old Celtic word meaning "high" or "noble". For example, the element bre means "hill"; which could be transferred to mean "eminence" or "exalted one". The name is quite popular in Ireland, on account of Brian Boru, a 10th-century king of Ireland. The name was also quite popular in East Anglia during the Middle Ages. This is because the name was introduced to England by Bretons following the Norman Conquest. Bretons also settled in Ireland along with the Normans in the 12th century, and 'their' name was mingled with the 'Irish' version. Also, in the north-west of England, the 'Irish' name was introduced by Scandinavian settlers from Ireland. Within the Gaelic speaking areas of Scotland, the name was at first only used by professional families of Irish origin. It was the fourth most popular male name in England and Wales in 1934, but a sharp decline followed over the remainder of the 20th century and by 1994 it had fallen out of the top 100. It retained its popularity in the United States for longer; its most popular period there was from 1968–1979 when it consistently ranked between eighth and tenth.
Brian Boru's March is a traditional Irish tune.
Brian Boru was a High King of Ireland who founded the O'Brien dynasty.
In 1969, the song was recorded by The Chieftains.Horslips used it in 1976, as the intro and basis for "Trouble (With a Capital T)" from the album The Book of Invasions.

The tune is a march in 6/8 time, so the right hand moves back and forth in mirrorlike patterns, R-L-R, L-R-L, to create a lively swinging effect, and each new pass-through of the melody is in a new key a fourth lower than the one before. In the third verse the dampers are depressed; various departures from the exact tune arrive serendipitously. A studio recording of a similar performance is on the album Jamestown: On the Edge of a Vast Continent, with several other instruments joining in for a full improvisational flavor, found here: http://timothyseaman.com/index.php/discog...

The internet is revolutionising academic research, breaking down many pre-existing barriers between university life and the wider world. Nowhere is this more true than in the field of genetic genealogy and it is local geographic and surname projects, and associated websites, run by citizen scientists, as well as university papers which are forcing the pace of change. This work is characterised by growing expertise in genetics and family history but the key research challenge for medieval historians is to investigate the origin and development of surnames in Ireland and Western Europe. This presentation investigates the processes of surname adoption through the pivotal figure of Brian Boru. This lecture was presented at Genetic Genealogy Ireland 2014. This video, the second of a 2-part series for History Hub to mark 1000 years since the Battle of Clontarf, charts how the 1014 battle was skilfully usurped and retold by various nationalists for political purposes. It focuses in particular on Daniel O'Connell in 1843 and the Irish Volunteers in 1914 both of whom artfully propagated the myth of a David and Goliath struggle of the Irish against powerful foreign oppressors. This UCD video challenges this myth and shows how Brian Boru was put to propaganda purposes by nationalists in later years. Just as the Americans and the French have their revolutionary foundations in 1776 and 1789, the emergent Irish nation used 1014 as a powerful ingredient for its own national glue. Battles in the medieval past have always been popular with propagand...

The Dál gCais is one of the oldest Gaelic Clans and gave rise to Brian Boru’s branch among many others. In 2006 Dennis Wright discovered a distinctive set of DNA markers that defined this Clan and since then advanced DNA testing has helped clarify the branching pattern within this particular Clan, allowing people to place themselves on particular branches of the Dalcassian family tree. Dennis discusses the history of this project, how it has evolved over time, and what the future holds for the men of the Dál gCais. This lecture was presented at Genetic Genealogy Ireland 2016.
