England: A woman with an imaginary friend has told a group of primary school children that their harmless imaginary friend does not exist.

A trainee vicar who told primary school children Father Christmas does not exist has apologised for her insensitive, off-the-cuff remark.

The Rev Margaret McPhee made the comment at a carol service at St Mary's Church, Stalham in Norfolk for Stalham Academy pupils on Monday night.

It seems the comments were part of her telling a large whopper to the children about "the meaning of Christmas".

United Kingdom: The other day, Bartholomew's Notes on Religion drew my attention to the unearthing of an ancient artifact, or rather, to the conspiracy theories surrounding the disappearance of something pulled out of an MP's arse: Geoffrey Dickens' alleged dossier proving the existence of child abuse by satanic cults, whose members included some very important people indeed.

And now the Prime Minister himself has either been sucked in, or is trying to distract attention away from something:

David Cameron has ordered a fresh investigation into what happened to a missing dossier of alleged paedophile activity involving politicians in the 1980s.

The inquiry follows pressure from former ministers and campaigners against child abuse to find the dossier, which was handed to the then home secretary, Leon Brittan, by the Conservative MP Geoffrey Dickens.

Cameron said he understood the concerns that had been raised. That's why I've asked the permanent secretary at the Home Office [Mark Sedwill] to do everything he can to find answers to all of these questions and to make sure we can reassure people about these events.

Some sources I've see equate this dossier with his vapourware one on Satanic Abuse. That was my first thought on reading the news, but the dates don't match:

Dickens, a longstanding campaigner against child abuse, passed the dossier of allegations to Brittan in 1983. Brittan has said he passed it on to his officials and raised concerns about some of the allegations with the director of public prosecutions.

The Satanic one is from 1988.

Never again can it be claimed that our Law Officers are unaware of the growing menace. I have now warned Parliament, and that warning is duly recorded in the Official Report of our proceedings. It is my intention in a few weeks' time to hand a dossier to the Home Office, compiled by Childwatch and me. We must then discuss how best to proceed to safeguard children. There will not be an easy answer, but we may learn from discussions with certain American states. It is certain that black witchcraft and Satanism will not go away unless we unite to drive it away. In reply, the Minister of State, Home Office, John Patten, welcomed the promise of a dossier, but noted that the allegations made by Dickens were of acts that were already illegal and covered by existing law. Yet in 1990, Dickens claimed

A search of Hansard for references to witchcraft by Geoffrey Dickens suggests otherwise. A search on child abuse generally reveals nothing until January 1984, when Dickens does mention presenting a dossier to the Home Secretary - concerning the Kincora Children's Home, and nothing to do with paedophile politicians, Satanists or any of the other lurid stories. A major anti-child abuse effort comes later that year, with his Paedophilia (Protection of Children) Bill, in which he mentions having used parliamentary privilege to name a paedophile diplomat. While the Bill was aimed at organisations such as the Paedophile Information Exchange, it would make it an offence to be a member of any organisation, association, society, religious sect, club or the like that holds meetings at which support is given to encourage, condone, corrupt or entice adults to have sexual relationships with children (emphasis mine).

Subsequent to that, his only comments on the topic seems to concern the Not the Nine O'Clock News favourite, chopping off the goolies of offenders, hanging and other forms of violent revenge.

But, there was a dossier in 1983, and it concerned paedophiles, but it had nothing to do with Satanism. It had been compiled by the Metropolitan Police, not Geoffrey Dickens. The Glasgow Herald reported on it at the time:

Scotland Yard announced that a new report on the activities of PIE, the Paedophile Information Exchange, has gone to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Home Secretary Mr. Leon Brittan will this weekend receive a special report drawn up from this dossier. Yesterday, Tory MP Mr. Geoffrey Dickens, who has campaigned for the outlawing of the group, claimed it contained the names of a number of people in public life.

The MP has previously threatened to use parliamentary privilege to name names unless there was a clampdown on the organisation.

So there we have it. What's lost is a dossier on PIE, compiled by the Metropolitan Police, about which Dickens made some claims at the time, but which he did not originate. Which at least means it might be worth trying to find as it's less likely to be full of made-up crap.

But the cause of his suspension is not that they are embarrassed by his ridiculous views—they are shared by many in the extreme right organisation—but because he had been told not to do any media stuff, and he did.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage said he was entitled to his strong Baptist view of the world, but had defied a request not to do further media interviews.

Mr Farage said: So we suspended him, quite rightly.

In the letter to the Henley Standard he wrote: The scriptures make it abundantly clear that a Christian nation that abandons its faith and acts contrary to the Gospel (and in naked breach of a coronation oath) will be beset by natural disasters such as storms, disease, pestilence and war.

He added: I wrote to David Cameron in April 2012 to warn him that disasters would accompany the passage of his same-sex marriage bill. ...

It is his fault that large swathes of the nation have been afflicted by storms and floods.

His party have been quick to point out that he is entitled to his views, but that they are not those of the party. And I am perfectly entitled to mock him for those views and note that they're not that unusual for a UKIP member. Perhaps UKIP's objection is that he neglected to blame the EU in some way?

The creationist books, defended by head teacher Sandra MacKenzie, denounce the theory of evolution and warn pupils that, without God, they risk being murdered in a harmful, disgusting world.

The Daily Record found that a so-called Church of Christ, in reality an extremist anti-science and homophobic cult that appears to have nothing to do with any of the actual teachings of Jesus, had been promoting its lunatic theology at an East Kilbride primary school in collusion with the headmistress for at least 8 years.

The Church of Christ have targeted Kirktonholme as a “mission” and have several members helping with classes and giving lessons in religion.

Church members like [Jared] Blakeman - photographed as a scary Pirates of the Caribbean character - were allowed in to work as classroom assistants and help with homework and in other mainstream roles.

Parents were also furious to learn that cash raised by children which they thought was intended for school funds had been given to the sect to build a church nearby.

Parents are rightly outraged, and have demanded the sect be removed from the school.

A documentary shown at the Toronto Film Festival shows how the famous broadcaster and evangelist took cash aimed at a totally useless and fraudulent project, and diverted it towards his own personal material enrichment. Robertson's Operation Blessing International raised money to send people to get in the way of valuable work being done by the likes of Médecins Sans Frontières. These people would run alongside stretchers (not help carry them, or anything useful like that), haranguing the dying and seriously ill by reading the Bible at them. The Operation also claimed to have supplied medicine to Africa, built schools and hospitals and many other claims of humanitarian aid which were exaggerated. Robertson showed footage of medics in a hospital which turned out to be a MSF establishment having nothing to do with Operation Blessing. So what happened to the cash he raised from his gullible followers? He spent it on a diamond mine.

Robert Hinkle, the chief pilot for Operation Blessing in Zaire in 1994, said he received new orders. They began asking me: can we haul a thousand-pound dredge over? I didn't know what the dredging deal was about, he said.

The documentary describes how dredges, used to suck up diamonds from river beds, were delivered hundreds of miles from the crisis in Goma to a private commercial firm, African Development Company, registered in Bermuda and wholly owned by Robertson. ADC held a mining concession near the town of Kamonia on the far side of the country.

Mission after mission was always just getting eight-inch dredgers, six-inch dredgers … and food supplies, quads, jeeps, out to the diamond dredging operation outside of Kamonia, Hinkle told the film-makers.

A coconut has been detained by Maldivian police on suspicion of vote-rigging in a key presidential election.

The coconut, described as young, was found near a school that will be used as a polling station on Saturday on the remote Kaafu atoll, one of the hundreds of islands that comprise the Indian Ocean archipelago state.

Though the population of the Maldives is Sunni Muslim, continuing belief in magic is widespread in rural areas. Coconuts are often used in rituals and inscribed with spells.

But belief in the efficacy of spells is not restricted to remote islands. Back to the UK, and we find ostensibly liberal Christians engaging in a little bit of magic of their own.

By exorcising the demons of the arms fair, the Christians say they will draw attention to the evil of DSEi, while praying for an end to the arms trade. The action will take place at one of the gates to the Excel Centre at 4.00pm on Sunday, which will be marked as Stop the Arms Trade Day of Prayer.

Because casting spells and asking your imaginary friend (one with a history of extreme violence) for help is really going to have an effect.

England: The headline of an article on the BBC News website today caused a raised eyebrow at Prattle Towers: Witchcraft-based child abuse: Action plan launched. The start of the article was even more worrying. Had they taken on a redundant News of the World writer?

The government has launched an action plan to tackle child abuse linked to witchcraft or religion in England.

So, who is to be the victim of a moral panic this time? Are the fundies attacking Neopagans again? No, but the potential for vilification of an entire minority group is clear. This time, I fear what will happen when the Daily Mail picks up the story, which is about a tiny number of cases among communities of more recent African origin than the majority:

Scotland Yard says it has conducted 83 investigations into faith-based child abuse in the past decade - among them Kristy Bamu, who was murdered aged 15 in 2010, Victoria Climbie who was eight when she was murdered in 2000 and the headless torso of "Adam", a five or six-year-old boy, which was found in the Thames in 2001.

Ministers are concerned that although the investigations number just a few dozen, other abuse is going on, "under-reported and misunderstood".

Fortunately, the government's "plan" seems to involve recognition of the efforts already being made by community groups and religious leaders, rather than the simultaneous nagging of the affected communities into apathy, and vilification of same as we've seen in the approach to extremist Islamist bampots.

These efforts included Channel 4 documentaries highlighting the problem, most recently in 2010.

The programme explores several churches where child “deliverance” takes place, using undercover footage. A young journalist named Juliana Oladipo agreed to pose as a difficult teenager being brought to church by her mother; in each case witchcraft is diagnosed as the problem, and aggressive exorcism prescribed as the cure.

Some of the fraudulent preachers were after more than just money. One of them demanded sex from a young woman, 21 times, to "cure" her of her witchcraft.

Scotland: A Christian preacher and former Conservative candidate has been gaoled for the sexual abuse of three children, two boys and a girl. He had met the children at the Edinburgh City Mission and gained the trust of their parents.

The parents of his victims believed he was a devout Christian and let him take the youngsters to play parks and swimming pools.

Instead Smart, of Christian Crescent, Edinburgh, used the time alone with them to carry out the abuse.

But this is not the first time Smart has featured in the Prattle. Back in 2003, when he was a Tory candidate, he ranted against Pride marches and campaigned to have them banned. His outburst directly caused a group of LGBT activists to call a meeting to arrange that year's march in Edinburgh. Somehow, no-one had bothered and the march would not have happened had the activists not been reminded by him. When he said I find quite horrendous the sort of materials being provided to impressionable youngsters in schools now. It is quite vile., it was assumed he was talking about the repeal of Section 28. We now know he was talking about himself.
