Rocksteady is a music genre that originated in Jamaica around 1966. A successor of ska and a precursor to reggae, rocksteady was performed by Jamaican vocal harmony groups such as The Gaylads, The Maytals, The Heptones and The Paragons. The term rocksteady comes from a dance style that was mentioned in the Alton Ellis song "Rock Steady". Dances performed to rocksteady were less energetic than the earlier ska dances. The first international rocksteady hit was "Hold Me Tight" (1968) by the American soul singer Johnny Nash; it reached number one in Canada.
Rocksteady uses some of the musical elements of rhythm and blues (R&B), jazz, ska, African and Latin American drumming, and other genres. One of the most easily recognizable elements, as in ska, are offbeat rhythms; staccato chords played by a guitar and piano on the offbeats of the measure. This offbeat can be counted so that it falls between each count as an "and". Example: 1 and 2 and 3 and 4. The perceived tempo became slower with the development of rocksteady than it had been in ska and this led to a number of changes in the music. The guitar and piano players began to experiment with occasional accents around the basic offbeat pattern. This can be heard throughout Jamaican recordings in subsequent years.
Rocksteady is a musical genre, a predecessor of reggae, that was most popular in Jamaica in the 1960s.
Rocksteady or Rock Steady may also refer to:
Alton Nehemiah Ellis OD (1 September 1938 – 10 October 2008) was a Jamaican singer-songwriter. One of the innovators of rocksteady who was given the informal title "Godfather of Rocksteady". In 2006, he was inducted into the International Reggae And World Music Awards Hall Of Fame.
Born Alton Nehemiah Ellis in Trenchtown, Kingston, Jamaica, Ellis was raised within a musical family and learned to play the piano at a young age. He attended Ebeneezer and Boys' Town schools, where he excelled in both music and sport. While at Boys' Town Ellis performed as a dancer (in a duo) in the first show that a school director called Mr Bailey had organized for Vere Johns who had been invited down to talent scout. He would later compete on Vere Johns' Opportunity Hour. After winning some competitions, he switched to singing, starting his career in 1959 as part of the duo Alton & Eddy with Eddy Parkins.
Jet, Jets, or The Jets may refer to:
Lynn Taitt (22 June 1934 – 20 January 2010) was a reggae guitarist born in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago, closely associated with Jamaican rocksteady music.
Born Nerlynn Taitt, in San Fernando, Trinidad, he got his start as a musician playing in local steel drum bands, before taking up the guitar aged 14. He formed his own band, which was booked by Byron Lee to perform at the 1962 independence celebrations in Jamaica. Taitt decided to stay in Jamaica, living in Kingston, and played in a number of bands including The Sheiks, The Cavaliers, and The Comets, and worked with Baba Brooks, The Skatalites and Tommy McCook and the Supersonics. The most successful of his groups was The Jets, formed in 1966 and which included Hux Brown, Headley Bennett, Hopeton Lewis, Gladstone Anderson, and Winston Wright. Taitt's guitar style was inventive and unconventional, with a sharp percussive sound that accented the rocksteady beat. Lynn Taitt and the Jets played on hundreds of recording sessions for Jamaican producers such as Bunny Lee, Duke Reid, Joe Gibbs, Coxsone Dodd, and Sonia Pottinger, often performing up to five sessions a day. Their recording of "Take It Easy" was one of the first rocksteady singles and it reached number one in the Jamaican singles chart.

Also available here if blocked in your region: https://www.mixcloud.com/PJHiggins/rocksteady-studio-1/ Rocksteady is easily THE most essential genre in the Reggae anthology. Some of my favourite Rocksteady tunes were resident on the Studio 1 record label, a label alchemic in producing sonic gold. Through Rocksteady, I derived a love for American R&B; and the vocal harmony groups of the 1950's/1960's, who the Jamaican artists emulated in their own special way. I didn't get to experience Rhythm & Blues first hand and in fact remained quite ignorant to its' origins until my late teens when my musical repertoire finally began to expand. I only ever knew Reggae's interpretation of R&B;, but was fortunate that it opened up a portal of appreciation, eventually introducing me to guitar based musi...

Opened me up and turned my life around
Let the sun shine in and shook me off the ground
Fallin' apart somehow you kept it together
Kept me from drifting in the stormy weather
Love like an artist let your juices flow
Like a scientist driven to know everything
Flood of tears will not break the levees
Rocksteady ever ready
Rocksteady
Ever ready
Rocksteady
So heavy
Girl, I'll love you
If you let me
Rocksteady
Ever ready
Ain't it funny how the times they change
Started out cool and ended up acting strange
We all want to get love and affection
No one wants to let down their protection
But you and I we've been through that
We accept each other as a matter of cold fact
Now we're gonna spend our whole lives together
Started out right and it's just getting better
Rocksteady
Ever ready
Rocksteady
So heavy
Girl, I'll love you
So just let me
Rocksteady
Ever ready
It took the two of us so long to get it right
Ain't gonna let it slip
It took the two of us so long to get it right
Ain't gonna let it slip
Let me in and give me your heart
Forget the past and get me a new start
Be who I am somehow you just let me
Rocksteady ever ready
Rocksteady
Ever ready
Rocksteady
So heavy
Girl, I'll love you
If you let me
Rocksteady
Ever ready
Rocksteady (Open me up and turn my life around)
Ever ready
Rocksteady (Let the sunshine in and shook me off the ground)
So heavy
Girl, I love you (Flood of tears will not break the levees)
So just let me
Rocksteady (Rocksteady)
